Well we had a break yesterday evening so I went out and cut things back, dug up what I needed to remove, mowed the back and potted a few things for my daughter. Things in the back are looking better, but the front is a mess. It has been raining most of the day so not sure I will get another break today- if not I will be out there tomorrow. I am feeling better about the back for sure and have had just about enough rain for the day- we could save some for later in the week! Temps are nicer today I must say.
Texas heat
We had quite a thunderstorm last night but no damage, got some really good rain,
thank God, we sure needed it.
Greenie67, that conjures up quite a picture, weeding in a bathing suit in the rain, I am sure it was a lot cooler and easier, but what did you do about the water running down your face? did you wear goggles?
I say this because I can't stand water in my eyes.
Josephine.
Ditto not liking water in my eyes, Josephine....the major reason I've never liked swimming!
Greenie...you may have started something! Will have to try it someday...at risk of neighbors thinking what they will! One of the people who walk by my house (my street is a common circuit for walkers) has already commented that I'm like a mountain goat walking on a stone ridge! I think the second level up looks narrower from the street than it actually is! lol
A good rain here this morning before I woke up....good rain yesterday morning and a nice, cooler break yesterday afternoon. Can't complain here.
Thank God for this weekend's rain! I've been watering my containers/passion vine daily, and they still were looking wilted when I got home from work!
All this rain has really been good for the soul, as well as the garden! I think my beds are just about totally hydrated again.
I hope Lakeway got a lot of rain...I'm in Dallas, but will return home this evening
Good luck, Connie, I hope it's good news!
Connie, I don't think you'll have to water for a bit. Had more rain overnight.
I haven't seen any mention of the cenizo blooming, but I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in.....last Sunday on the way to Lake LBJ, I pointed out the sages were blooming along the highway, and that usually meant it would rain soon. DH rolled his eyes and said it was an "old wive's tale." Then Tuesday, the cenizos in our neighborhood were blooming. So I went out on a limb and "predicted" rain would come in a few days....and it did.....and DH still thinks it's wacky! But it always rains soon after those purple flowers pop out. Has anyone else experienced this.......husband who rolls eyes? (Oh, you thought I wondered about cenizos, no I already feel vindicated by the rain we've had the last two days. Just wondering about pesky husbands).
Well no real rain here!! Grrr!! We had at least 3 hours of lighting and thunder last night. A few drops here and ther came down making maybe a 1/8th of inch max.
Oh that's a tough break! You must feel like the redheadded step-child! Well don't give up hope, it was cool and lovely earlier today and now is cloudy and very muggy again. Possibly more rain on the way.
April
I did have to take off my glasses because of the rain but I didn't notice it running in my eyes. Luckily we have some acreage so I can't be seen by neighbors! Once my hair was wet enough, I just raked it back with my fingers so most of the rain stayed out of my eyes I think. But I'm really sore this morning. I realized I worked much longer at a time when the heat isn't an issue! I've always loved the rain so it was fun...too bad I don't live in Seattle!!
It surely sounds like you had a lovely time, good for you!!!
We had 2" of the most needed manna from heaven. We hadn't had a spit since early April and my water bill was like the nat'l debt. We just this week got our entire garden done in drip irrigation, so what my DH wanted was to saturate the beds before we put all the chopped leaves down so the drip would keep it hydrated. Boy, did God answer our prayers. There might be hope yet. We have the majority of the garden that's in full sun done in natives so this should make things so much easier. We couldn't leave the homefront because everything dried out so fast w/these grueling temps. I would love it if we got a rain like this once a month. Now I'm being greedy...

Bigbubbles..that was the most hilarious post about your doubting husband!! My DH seems to either roll his eyes...or more often...come out with that ubiquitous comment that I'm sick of hearing my students say...."Whatever!!!" I hate that more than the eye thing! :)
More rain here this morning. I agree w/ Hilary, once a month would be wonderful! I am afraid to look at my water bill for the last month- our temps were so high here and I have all that dang St. Augustine's in the front yard, w/ no shade!
Okay, about 7 inches over the last couple of days -- YAY! For my money, it can just keep on raining for a while. We ran out between bursts and finished the new fence. If only the guy had come and put up my gutters, I'd have some full rainbarrels right now. Oh, well -- it'll happen! And soon enough it will be just plain hot and muggy, so I'm going to enjoy the living daylights out of this.
I'm with you Brigid--you will never hear me complain about rain in the summer. I know the alternative.
It sounds like our friends in Houston just got a deluge this morning. They are saying another 10 inches fell this morning. I think someone's aim was off. It was me doing the rain dance!! Still nothing here though.
That's the parts of Houston that floods everytime it spits a little rain. I am in Houston.
I just checked--we got 3.5". The trees down here really need it too--they have been suffering through the last two years and lack of summer rain.

I'm with debbie. we're not expecting that kinda deluge in my neck of the woods
3.5 inches sounds perfect! :) I'd pass on 10 inches in one morning - just a little much.
We've gotten that probably in the last 72 hours...still won't hear me complain. Media just gone bonkers--slow news day.
totally agree!!!!
My DH was flying from DFW to Alabama this morning and was to go through Hobby...said runways were closed for awhile while 4 inches of rain was on the runways!!
Hobby area floods with 1" of rain.
Tucked away in my house, minding my own business and ignoring the outside world I had no idea just how much rain we have had:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13418885/
"As much as 10.5 inches of rain was reported in the Houston area by the height of the morning rush hour, said Rusty Cornelius, administrative coordinator for Harris County Emergency Management. Almost 6 inches of rain fell in just 75 minutes near Hobby Airport, the National Weather Service reported."
They sent the National Guard to Houston for it. I had NO idea before moving to Texas that HOUSTON would be a flood zone! How scary.
99% of it is not.
Yeah my end of town got rain and a fair amount but all roads are clear. I would just stay off the Katy freeway in spots.
Send the extra rain this way!
No problem, consider it done!
That is some extraordinary picture, did you take it? where and how?
It is amazing.
Josephine.
Awww well thanks,
Actually . . . that's a painting I did after a 'major storm' we had here back in 1997. It's a long story and I'm not sure this is the place for it, so I'll just share the short version. for now :)
Some may remember the first storm . . . it's the one that spawned that monster tornado that sat and churned for over a half hour, basically whipping out a large area in Jarrell. Texas in May of '97. I remember hearing on the news that the storm cell was causing serious damage and moving south, heading for San Antonio. While that was going on there was another major system headed here from the west. It was also a pretty vicious storm and producing high winds, hail and heavy rain.
Well as faith would have it, the two storms collided in what seemed to be 'my back yard' . . . actually the news reported that occurred around the Lackland AFB area, which was only a short distance from where I was living at the time. Anyway (and I said I'd keep this short . . . lol ) when those two brutes got here . . . needless to say, all heck broke loose. Obviously we lost power right off, so I lit a few candles and when it appeared the majority of the high winds eased up a bit, I opened the curtains on my patio doors and enjoyed one of the best light shows I'd ever experienced.
Mother Nature is so amazing and can be very inspirational in so many ways :) When the power came back on . . . I heard the bad news about what all the storm had done and all I could think about was how lucky I was to still have a house with four walls and a roof in tact. The first thing I did after surveying the damages outside was to attempt to capture what I had just seen in my backyard - with a paint program I had just loaded on my PC. :)
So there you have it . . . my first ever attempt at a "Digital Painting" and the story that goes with it . . . lol Normally I paint with Acrylics or Watercolor (check my home page if interested) but I just wanted to see what I could do with a digital paint brush using a mouse and all that inspiration. :)
I'll attach a larger version of the image so you can see the details better. And also see it's not an actual photo.
Have a great day and do a little rain dance where ever you need it! :)

That's a very cool digital lightning picture and what a wonderful story explaining the inspiration, GD.
I just checked out you webpage and you have created some beautiful paintings! The detail in your wildlife paintings is awesome.
GD
Wow, I looked at your paintings too and dang it you are very talented! I am in awe! Thank you for sharing.
