Living Earth Technologies- don't know if they are everywhere but they have several locations in Houston sells it- don't know where it comes from, perhaps Madisonville, anyway they will deliver but they have a 4 yard minimum- I know from experience that 4 yards of mulch is a whole lot- but much cheaper this way, and 4 yards of dirt (good dirt) is not as much as you might think. I bet 4 yards of mushroom compost would be wonderful for my garden and whatever was left over that my daughter didn't want would likely make my St. Augustine happy- maybe I will check on the price.
Texas heat
And Scott Estes is a real nice person too.
Is he LET?
Yes--runs the place in Houston. Good friend of Michael's.

They are nice to deal w/- I use them for my own personal and also when I am landscaping. They are johnny on the spot whenever I need anything.
Mushroom Compost is not found much up here, the main reason is that it is slightly alkaline. So if you have a high PH, I'd avoid it.
It is supposed to be great for acidic soil though!
I've never tried that type compost either . . . I have lots of Live Oaks and my carpet grass may need the additional acid?
Here's a little "heat related" pic I took this AM.
Toad'ally Rude . . . of me?
This little guy was nice and cool and then got an unexpected morn'n bath :D
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/617866/
GD, I've had one of those guys in my mater garden and it hops out when I'm messing around with the maters and gives me a heart attack. I think he does it on purpose. Prob'ly a boy..you know how they like to scare girls. haha. LOL!
Great picture btw.
Michelle
Now Michelle!!!! You know FULL WELL that boys would do nut'n of the sort :D
I think "he" likes to hang out in my lil veggie garden area because I have it fenced off to keep the bigger critters out. (like my pups and the local rabbit population) And between him and the lizzards, I have very few pests bother'n the veggies.
and btw Thanks :) I've never been one to pass up a good Photo Opportunity ;)
I have one that sits at my back door almost every night. It's nice to see him there. He won't let me pet him though. I caught one for my granddaughter and she leaned right in and kissed him. Thankfully didn't get any of that foamy juice -- she goes straight for the mouth. She has a lizard bite on her lip right now.
I'll need to have a talk with her about those boys.
Speaking of the heat here in San Antonio, did anyone get any rain these past couple of days? Zero here...with alot of promises that didn't add up to anything. Oh well...I'm keeping my Texas natives happy with a soaker hose every now and then...and they are really showing off right now! My Texas Bird of Paradise is brilliant! As for this squirrel....it was 98 degrees a few days ago...I suppose he thought he would cool off on my back porch....lol Now thats HOT!
Love your Toad-ally Rude pic, GD! He does look quite peeved at you!! :)
TxTurq -- that's hilarious! Really maximizing the cool concrete I guess. Did he ask you to mist him?
Oh..I LOVE the squirrel pic, as I had one as a pet for about 8 years! A rancher friend found him as an orphaned baby--eyes weren't even open yet!--and I bottle fed him (named him Oscar Meyer as he looked just like a weenie!).
Squirrels do stretch out like that ...Oscar did it often and I had forgotten about it until you posted the pic~! Thanks so much for bringing back a memory I didn't know I had!
PS: It looks exactly like mine, which was a Texas gray squirrel.

lol Connie_W and brigidlily, I thought the little guy was dead when I looked out of my back door...then he turned around and faced the other direction. I probably should have tried to mist him! lol... Glad to bring back some warm memories for you, Connie_W. I've raised all sorts of critters but never raised a squirrel. Had pockets full of lizards and birds though. I had a Cuban Anole named Martha for 9 years! Glad to see that I'm finally attracting some anoles and fence lizards to my rock gardens.
Oh my! I love that picture of the squirrel. That is hilarious!
No rain up here north of Dallas either TxT. It's really frustrating too. They are calling for a chance of rain here Saturday though. Not holding my breath...
Another inch of rain here this afternoon--perfect timing for another shower too.
Over a month and a half and no rain. Watched them get rain North, South, East and West of me. Have to water every day with 1.5 acres to take care of.
You guys send some of that stuff up here.
I am going to start thinking west texas and plant that way . LOL
I was in Huntsville today and they got a nice hard downpour for a few minutes. On my drive home there was lightening to the southeast. We are under a severe thunderstorm warning here tonight. I sure hope it rains again here.
April I have spread a lot of the mushroom compost over my St. Augustine grass and it is loving it! The grass perked up and is so nice and green now. I have enough to last me a long time. ;)
I know what you guys mean Ted--I remember last summer...no rain from before mother's day until after July 4th here. I'm thankful for every bit we get and will never complain about it.
TxTur...
That lil' guy looks soooo cute!!! I was worried there weren't many squirrels here...I suppose I'm just not used to these new neighborhoods with no trees yet....did my part put in some...be nice to enjoy their shade! =)
Connie . . Thanks I couldn't resist (sheepish grinz)
TxTurqoize . . . Kool pic . . . I'm still wait'n for that wet stuff out here too . . . All I've gotten all week was a few clouds and some distant thunder. dmj needs to share :p
btw - I've raised all sorts of critters too and one of my favorites was my squirrel. Rocky :) Like Connie, I got him before his eyes were even open and he made a great pet. I got another one the following season (for a companion) that already had it's eyes open and it didn't tame down very well. I released the two together in my dad's pecan grove out south of town.
At least it's been a little cooler and I did get some nice pics this evening as the sun was going down. :)
Here's one that has my Thunder pup in the far background play'n with his Jolly Ball out by my little veggie garden.
Wow...beautiful trees...reminds me of my parents' ranch in Edna...
TARogers5, I hope the rain will zero in on you. Also you west and central TX folk -- it's been so wonderful to have plenty sometimes you don't remember how bad it is not to have it! It's all soaked in now down here and we could still use more. I should have gutters installed in a week or so, and just watch out for my rain barrels! I haven't had yard or garden in about six years, and now I do, and I'm treasuring every leaf, blade, and drop.
They are predicting rain today and for the next two days here in Arlington.
It is cloudy, but not rain yet, I hope they are right, we can certainly use it.
Josephine.
The squirrel photo is just too cute! I am glad that you posted that!
Well I got out and mowed some yesterday w/ grandson in tow! Hacked back a lot of what was starting to over grow and things are looking pretty good- this morning it's hotter than you know what and humid! Like having my own gigantic sauna!
Thanks everyone who sent this rain this morning. What a welcome sight. DMJ thanks for the lmemory. Not much this time but its not over yet. LOL
Josephine. On the radar it looks like it is over you now.
They just said the line of rain has hit the dang "heat dome" over us in Dallas, Ft Worth, and surrounding areas to the north. The storm is stalling in the northwest corner and breaking up. Dang it!!
Sweezel They said it will make another run at us tonight and tomorrow morning. Maybe we will get luck again. I watched it up here and is fizzled out just before it reached me.
GD,
You have the most beautiful Texas trees!!!!!!! I didn't realize San Antonio had trees that large!!!! I see lots of mesquites up my way....
San Antonio has ALOT of old live oak trees...Tir_Na-Nog. The Alamo Heights, Olmos Park area seems to have preserved theirs quite well. You can find some lovely old cypress trees along the river walk as well.
GD, have you tried a rain dance using your native american flute and drum? BTW, saw your site and loved it! What talent! Always wished I had some of that!
Yeah Tir . . . Like TxT says . . . this area has tons of oaks . . . and the Cypress are really nice too. There are many big Live Oaks that are hundreds of years old out around where I live (just south of town). If they could only talk . . . imagine the stories they'd tell . . . lol
We also have a few Post Oaks around here, but they don't seem to have the life span that the Live Oaks do. If I were to have to pick a favorite tree, it'd have to be the Live Oaks.
Linda, yes indeed . . . I even tried the ever famous 'neekid rain dance' lol No luck there at all... I think I scared the clouds away :(
Thanks for the comps . . . glad you enjoyed the site. :)
At least I got a rainbow for all my efforts ;)
lol GD,
No wonder we had a paltry 5 minute shower a few days ago. The storm clouds were running from your "neekid(sp?) rain dance." lol I am afterall...north of you..hehe I guess about the only good that has come out of this drought is that the fire ants are running into "no vacancy" signs...since the clay/rock soil here is so dadburn hard.
And I've already mentioned scorpions somewhere else around here!
Its been cloudy all day tho....I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I know my thirsty lizards out in the garden will be happy to get a drop or two. :D
uh huh . . . see how that works . . . I do all the dance'n and TxT get's the only 5 minute rain within 50 miles of here ... lol
As promised, here's the photos of that Coral Snake encounter I had yesterday :) (I put them in the Wildlife section)
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/618592/
Nice photos of the snake. I rather like snakes- I am very respectful of them and make every effort not to crowd into their personal space. We had many snakes near my last house, not many here though.
Even my xeriscape is looking wilty in this heat! I just checked my back yard and I've got a flock of grackles hiding under my wheel barrow with their beaks open...lol I could have sworn I saw one do a back flip into the bird bath. GD....do another "neekid rain dance!" lol...
Thanks April . . . thought ya'll might enjoy those :)
I enjoy them also, as long as I don't have to worry about my pups get'n bitten I leave them be. I had a python as a pet when I was a kid, he was a very fun and interesting pet. :)
Ok TxT, one neekid rain dance come'n up :D Just don't expect me to do back flips in your bird bath :p lol
