It was identified to me as Hetty Krauss. The flowers were HUGE and wild. They had such a attitude and the tendrils went on and on.
A friend Ilie who volunteers big time at the San Francisco Arboretum and is very brug knowledgeable, feels it is indeed Hetty Krauss. He swiped me a few cuttings.
I saw the coolest brug yesterday.
Kyle has explained its history in the past here.
"...is a natural hybrid collected in Pasto Columbia at around 10,000ft elevation by Hetty Krauss of Calif. The cultivar was then (mid 70's) called "Hetty Krauss" after the collector. "
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/363316/
A mature flower is so dark. Ilie brought a flower down to the sale and made quite a commotion. Everyone wanted one. I held my cuttings close. LOL.
Yikes! .. that is huge. Lucky you!
X
Kyle in his thread explains this one was renamed Dr. Seuss. However I have never seen a Dr. Seuss look like the one I saw yesterday. The tendrils were amazing. And even though midday it still was incredibly fragrant.
This was a newly opened bloom, so not dark yet but oh so beautiful and with such flounce.
Lol that last pic reminded me of the Alien thing .. I think I'd be scare to stick my nose in that to smell it ! Those tendrils might grab hold!

Very nice Kell !!
But Kell......it's not pink!!!!! LOL!!
Look at the size of that thing! Lucky girl.
It is beautiful and so large. None of my Dr. Seuss ever looked like that. I guess the mystery goes on. It was very nice of Ilie to give you a few cutting so you could grow this one. After it grows and blooms for you, if it were me, I would get some Dr Seuss pollen and see if it takes and then you will definitely know that what you have is not what we know as Dr. Seuss.
The leaves don't even look like Dr. Seuss so I imagine a cross with Dr. Seuss would be successful. It is definitely a mystery. I hope it really is truly Hetty Krauss. I always did think it was rude of those guys to rename Hetty's brug.
This still feels a little iffy for some reason. It will mean that Charles Grimaldi history and parentage is all messed up too.
Kell, doesn't clivia like to be pot bound?? If I got one this season, could I expect it to bloom this year & how often do they bloom?? Thanks!!
I LOVE it! What a bloom, the color, and the tendrils!
Hi all,
I just subscribed yesterday and can't resist commenting...that thing is spectacular!!!
If anyone is sellin' them anywhere, sign me up!!!
Kimmy
Definately not Hetty Krause (Syn. Dr Suess) this plant has way too many aurea genes in it. Does not have the characteristic serrated edges on the leaves either. May be a hybrid using Dr. Suess, but is not the original clone.
Still an awesome sized flower, saw one similar to this in Encinitas calif, many years ago at Stallings nursery(now gone)
Kell when it blooms try crossing with a true clone of Dr Suess as Brugnanny suggested. If it sets pods...OOPPS!
Still a great find, see if the flower size carries over to your garden, sometimes brugs will be huge in one environment and smaller under another one. Great deep color too, could be the cooler climate up north there.
:-)
Kyle is sooooooooooo right that environment can make an unbelieveable difference. A friend of mine used to grow B. Cuba in the foothills of LA and he said it was the most awsome sized brug flower they had ever seen in their ghouse environment. It also turned so orange it blew them away. When they grew it outside it was small and pale.
Ya just never know what our beloved brugs are gonna do. That's what makes them so wonderful!
ps ... llie is such a great guy. He was the very first person to donate sanguinea pics to the personal website I created in 1998. What a sweetie!

Hi Kyle, I was going to send you this picture today. Don't you love it? Ilie took me on a back tour where he has hidden some of his favorite plants. We had such fun, he had me climbing hills, going off paths. I got to go places and do things I would normally get kicked out of the Arboretum for doing. LOL.
I was wondering if you knew Ilie, he seemed to know all the players of Charles Grimadi fame. I didn't think to ask him about everyone. I will next time I see him.
From this blurb on San Marcos wholesale nursery blurb, it looks like there are lots of Hetty Krauss running around as Charles Grimaldi here too. Maybe they will meet and fall in love. LOL
Though I sure have never seen a brug like this one before. It was so fantastic. Had me mesmorized and I have seen a lot of special brugs. Leave it to nature out trump man everytime.
I thought this site was so interesting and it mentions Ilie:
"The very similar plant that we grew for many years thinking it was Brugmansia 'Charles Grimaldi' turned out to be the cultivar 'Hetty Kraus'. We are grateful to Ilie Gacu at the Stribling Arboretum for clearing this up and getting us stock of the true B. 'Charles Grimaldi', which we feel is a superior plant."

Ilie does lots of work with epis too. This is one of his newest and his best seedlings. I was in love. And the branches are purple tinged also. It was a most complicated colored bloom the way it varied towarded the center and even the outer rim of each petal had a different shade! Just PERECT!

Truth is Kell, as great as your photo is, in 'real life' it is even more amazing! (the Epi that is), actually both were amazing! And that brug was oranger sherbet orange too. And had an intoxicating scent.
The back petals on the Epi were such a deep deep red.
Lucky me, Kell shared a cutting of the mystery brug with me (and an amazing fuchsia too!). And I agree, it looks nothing like my Dr. S. (who's blooming as I type, I better go snap a photo)
LOL Lali girl. Lali works at the Arboretum also. She is in charge of all their Hoyas, Gessies and chief assistant in Begonias. Which is a great thing for she and I are begonia crazy!! I am missing one designation aren't I, Lali? Obviously not a plant I adore. LOL At least yet. LOL
And I agree, the pic of the brug does not come close to show how special it was. The color was off the charts orange and the twirl it had was breathtaking. It looked fake. Such personality, not boring at all like so many brugs can get once you get over the thrill at the sheer number of blooms because they have the identical bloom hang down 100 times staring at you.
Here is some type of solanum they had growing like weeds in the back of their greenhouses. I had never seen one with a bloom with such colors. Anyone know this one?
Shucks, the picture was badly blurred because I think my heart was beating so fast when I saw the colors. I was having a huge fight inside me: to grab one or not to. They were so invasive but yet so beautiful, I really had to fight over it. it is so hard being me sometimes.
Well, not in 'charge' LOL, but I do work (propagating and potting up, assisting etc) in those departments along with other great plant folks!
The photo of the solanum may be blurred because we were dangling off the side of a hill trying to view it and the Epi's too! LOL.
I'll ask if I can prop some cuttings of it - shouldn't be a problem. It was beautiful wasn't it!
Edited to add, Lali is not a good friend to have. LOL. She brings out the worst in me, the give me give me, I NEED it mode. LOL. We are dangerous together. Of course she has acres and acres of land and I have a postage stamp. She has frost though and I have little. Everything is a trade off in life.
I am sorry, I didn't mean to pass over a big WELCOME to Kimmy to our brug world here. I hope you stay with us Kimmy and fall in love with all our brugs. We have a lot of fun here. Brugs are fun to grow and very rewarding with their huge blooms. A gaud flower for sure.
And I am sorry Sherry, I was thinking earlier someoen had asked me about clivia and I thought it was a dmail. LOL. Then I found it here and it was you! LOL. I am new to clivia and just learning though I have quite a collection already. Another Daver got me going on them. Good friends have undue influence. They wear you down with all their pictures and their exclamations of true love. I am so easy and get sucked right in.
Then I went to greenhouses here that house some of the best clivia in the world by one of the best known hybrirdizers and it sealed the deal. His clivia go for $200 on up to over $1000. I went nuts looking. Such big eyes I got. LOL.
Anyway, you need to know how old your plant is, usual is 5 years from seed to bloom. Though another friend who grows them showed me some that were blooming in 3 years. Each year the flower ball gets bigger and better. I do think they like to be a bit rootbound. Do not overwater. Sadly they bloom once a year but in a way it makes it that much more special and to be treasured so dearly.
Recently I bought a very special one, and guess what color it is??? A variegated PINK one. LOL LOL LOL!
Be still my PINK striped heart.
Clivia as far as you can see and I looked at each one looking for that special shade.

hmmmm ... wonder why they call Charles Grimaldi superior to Hetty Kraus if Hetty Kraus supposedly looks like what's pictured on this thread? Mystery.
Welcome all as a new person I need to add my amazement also, sounds like its got it all, perfume to get lost in and tons of personality, I say keep growing that Brug whatever the parentage and I am sure that many if not all of us will be looking for a piece in the future, Rita.
Oh Kell, a varigated pink , that is too die for !!
WELCOME to the brug world, Rita. I am glad you like this pretty. I have a flowers on one of the cuttings and I am hoping it will open enough for me to get more pollen. I have a double apricot I am going to love to dab some on.
Oh Patricia ...................... is that hot or what? LOL. And did I tell you I finally got a variegated yellow. They had an auction at the SF Arboretum during their preview night of their spring sale. I went nuts. I had such fun. And then I didn't have enough money and Sue had to pay for all the auction plants. LOL You know, now that I think about it, she hasn't come plant shopping with me since. I guess I should have paid her back. LOL
Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm addicted to brugs, too. They were my first gardening addiction. I have a few varieties. Charles Grimaldi, Dr. Seuss, Jean Pasko and a couple with no ID.
I look forward to learning and sharing with the forum.
Kimmy
Accompanying pics are of my best ever brug flush. Taken last Oct. Acquired this specimen from a trade. Trader called it Candida Yellow.
Kell:
I got this from Ilie a couple of years ago, it was marked Hetty Krauss. I presume it is from the same stock plant. The flower form/shape is the similiar, but not quite as big in size. Mine is in a pot versus being in the ground.
This also has the serrated leaves, so I think it may be the real Dr. Seuss.
Beautiful, Huckuntod, lovely photos! Dr. Seuss, never fail, perfect novice brug, absolutely hated it here and I would have too, the bugs loved her, poor girl. Yours is so pretty and I love your Clivia too, dreamy!!
Kell, Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Kell,
How do you get so blessed? To be able to have such friends and great experiences? It must because you are a beautiful person. Thanks for sharing. Marie
Welcome to brugs, Rita! I know you will love them to pieces. LOL.
Kimmy, your brug looks just great. Sounds like you are off to a great start. Do not be surprised when they start to multiple. They sure have a way of doing that.
THANKS Kin! It was a great color!! And thank you Betty. You are a sweetheart. And my goodness Marie, you are too nice but I do have great friends. I am so blessed in that way. And I am so glad you are my new friend. I hope you had a great time with your daughter. Were all your plants still alive when you got home? I hope so.
Huckuntod, I have heard about you from Dick! Your clivia looks great. Mine is called Clivia 'Kaya'
from Victor Murillo. I haven't seen it bloom yet but hoping it will flower next year. Here it is.
Oh my Kell, thats is one beautiful brug! If it clashes at all in your garden, it would look smashing over here! Or when it gets big enough to share, I would be eternally grateful. :-)
Sounds like it was a great visit, wish I could have made it.
Great find Kell, you sure know how to sniff out a great Brug.
