Asiatic Lilies eaten

Fifty Lakes, MN(Zone 3b)

I planted 18 asaitic lily bulbs last fall all around the shoreline of my lake property. I live in North Central Minnesota.(zone 3b) I was so excited when they all came up and was looking forward to a beautiful display of naturalized color. Well, something ate them. It gnawed from the ground up eating the bottom leaves and then eating into the stem. I put a wire cage around the one plant I managed to save and it has 1 1/2 in holes in it. But the little creature still got in and finally managed to wipe me out. I don't believe a rabbit could get it, and at one time I thought it may be muskrats but the cage wasn't moved. How can I protect them next year if I am lucky enough for them to come back and does anyone know what could be eating them?

Haven't a clue, but whatever it is, it sure seemed to enjoy the buffet. I haven't used this product, but a number of people on the lily forum swear by Plantskydd. I used the Irish Spring soap this year after suffering some bunny damage and it seemed to work pretty good.

After closer inspection of the cage I found a part on the bottom that was bent up a litttle. I am now thinking a baby bunny could have squeezed under it but you would think there would be bunny droppings close by. My only hope now is that they will have enough energy to come up next year. I'll try that Plantskydd and the irish spring soap and maybe stay up all night to solve the mystery.

The wild bunnies in my yard do that kind of damage to my asiatics. The adult bunnies are quite small, what you might consider "baby" size. I use Liquid Fence, Deer and Rabbit formula. Stinks like garlic, but does the trick, and has to be reapplied every so often. The smell dissipates after a day. he other culprit is my DH and his weed whacker.
