Frog identification

Claremore, OK

I put some clover in a school pond and it just took over when I couldn't get in to work on the pond one year. A true nightmare.

After putting in a pond a month ago we were overjoyed yesterday when two frogs showed up. They haven't left yet but we put a piece of wood hedged between the rocks for them to get out if needed. How long do they stay before they jump out. Will they come back?

Yesterday also one of our goldfish (the largest one that we've had over a year), jumped out and crashed on the side of the pond. By the time we discovered him he was dead. Don't think the frog arrival and the fish demise were connected but made us wonder. At any rate we are so glad to see all of this wildlife.

Question...how did the frogs find us? I understand it has something to do with the reflection of the wter but it's still baffling.

Thanks. Ellen

If you plant a pond the wildlife will find it as if by magic and I suspect your frogs will be back and make themselves at home. If you buy pond plants they sometimes have eggs or larvae on them but they are usually welcome. It's a shame about the goldfish. I wonder if he was trying to get more oxygen, do you have plants in the pond?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I have seen my Koi come out of the water for a fly bug. Perhaps your goldfish was overly ambitious and jumped to far. Sorry for your loss.

Here is Melvin today checking out the drip lines!! All in good shape!

How do frogs find your backyard pond? We just put a water feature in and already have a couple of frogs. How did they find us?

Am enjoying this thread. Never knew there was so much going on with these frogs and now a whole new world of frogs is open to us. Ellen

Hello frogexperts and lovers! I have this fellow sitting in his usual spot in the yard every day. I finally photographed him for the first time. Does anyone know what frog this is? I have tons of tadpoles too, probably the same kind of frog, I imagine. I always like seeing pics of those cute green frogs. I've never seen any in my yard. I think this fellow and his mates are dominating my habitat! :)

Here is a link to the 32 types of frogs in Florida. I think he may be a Southern Leopard frog. This is a great website for future reference on frog critters that cross your path.

Thanks for the link. The sounds I hear at night are like the Cuban Treefrog, so I think that might be it. Interesting. Bummer it's an introduced species. I love listening to the different calls! Thanks BeaHive!

Glad to help. It is hard sometimes to ID these frogs from a picture. It is hard to see true colors and size. He is cute!

The last one I found today was one about 2" also hiding in the bog. She was hard to photograph as she was hiding in the reeds. "eye" managed to get this shot.

Wow! Awesome pics! Keep em coming!

Here's my baby. Don't know what kind he is but have several here and seem friendly. I was moving him off my shoe and saw the pretty color on it's bottom side. Put him on the water pot with my Lotus that was floating, waiting to go in the pond. Took another of it's top side.

Huge frog lover here.
I love the pic of the Western Bird-Voiced Treefrog in the birdhouse pic.
We have four green frogs in our pond. Believe it or not all of them are tame.
We buy them night crawlers and they will come out of the pond and eat them out of our hands. If your not careful they will grab your fingers and toes thinking there food. ; )
This is one that just happens to be blue. He has lived in our pond for over three years now.

I love the Blue one. Never saw one like that before. Ours are mostly chaulky white to green and some brown bull frogs. Blue is awsome!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

mekos. cute frogs. Here is a link to SC frog identification. I think the greenish one is called a bird-voiced tree frog. You will need to decide about the brown one as there are several thay look like him on this site.

SunnyAZ.. Love the blue one and love the fact that you hand feed your frogs. I think down the road I could convince my Big Mama to do so. She is getting used to being around me now and i bet if I had some juicy morsel ..she would be most grateful,

Here she is today catching a few rays!

Oh, I do believe so. I think I have all4 of the first category of toad frogs, also. Green and grey tree frogs. Some are so tiny they hide in the leaves of my banana tree. Just move a leaf and there she be. They sound awsome. We have a stream in the woods behind us and at night they sound like crikets chirping all night.

I have some sad news.I am so sad. I have been looking for Big Mama all day and did not find her until a few minutes ago. She got herself wedged under the plant shelf in the top of the falls and I guess got stuck. She has gone over the raindow bridge to the big pond in the sky. I am home alone and it is getting dark and I can not get her out by myself. I need someone to lift the self while I retrieve her for burial. I am gonna cry!

Here is her final picture taken yesterday. Please say a little prayer for her good soul!. She will be missed!

Oh, Beahive! I'm SO sorry! Hope her family might come around to comfort you!

So sorry for your loss.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, I am recovering from the shock of her horrible death. Poor thing. I finally got her out this morning. Been quiet at the pond today. She usually lead the singing. :(

Thanks Karen Marie... There is a new gal in town that has been hanging out this afternoon. She does not appear to be camera shy. Maybe she is the daughter of Big Mama. She is small only about three inches from the tip of her nose to her behind. Will post some pictures in a bit.
