Frog identification

Claremore, OK

I'm not sure what type of frog this is; however, I've got loads of them and tadpoles everywhere. The tadpoles are small and don't look like the great big bull frog tadpoles I've seen. That's not to say that some of tadpoles might be from a different type of frog. This frog is active during the day and just hangs out in the water all the time.

darlindeb, that looks like a bullfrog to me. We have those in Virginia, don't know if you have them in Oklahoma.

If it is a bullfrog, make sure you don't put any small fish in your pond or the bullfrogs will eat them. I know they're supposed to be able to eat anything they can fit in their mouths, but I've been okay with fish that are at least 5-6 inches long.

Thanks for the input. I've just got plants at the moment.

Looks like a bull frog to me to. I believe that they stay tadpoles for 2 years so the tadpoles you have could be first year bull frog tads. I do not know if EBAY still allows it, but they used to sale bull frog tadpolses on EBAY for a couple of bucks a piece pous shipping. I had bought alot, but someone sold me a batch that had some type of fungus that looked like ick that fish get and I bought some ick fish treatment at the pet store and put it in without reading all of the warnings and killed everyone of them. I would love to have bull frogs here. They are cute and I love to hear them. That one looks healthy. Thanks for sharing the photo. I found this thread looking for the new forum for Saturdays about naming a caption. I saw that there is a frog photo on it and was looking for it again. Take care,
Mike

This bad boy has come to visit my pond. I have had bull frogs and tree frogs in the past. Not sure if this one is a bull frog or some other species. He appears to be almost black and almost looks fake. Any suggestions?

I think this is one of my better photos of a bull frog. There was another thread where we were talking about frog identification. I hope I cut and pasted the right thing.

If you do a search in the forums, you can get lots of hits for bull frogs.

Three years ago I had a huge bullfrog that we think was eating sparrows! We kept finding small deposits of feathers now and then at the edge of the pond where the birds come down to drink. This bullfrog was BIG! He was the size of a lunch plate. Don't know where he came from. There are no other ponds nearby and our pond is rubber lined. Alas, he did not survive the winter even though we put a big deep mud filled tray at the bottom for it to burrow into for the winter. The koi kept distburing the mud which probably didn't help. I found him dead in the skimmer the next spring. We've had none since. Boy, could he jump. He could clear 6' easy.

Yoo, hoo! Deb!

'Tis froggie season again! Thought you might like to check out
this website, it has some fantastic photos and identification information
for Oklahoma critters, plants and more!

Takes a while to load, but well worth it. Even on dial-up, I found
this site very helpful:

I'll give it a try. The little "croakers" haven't started up their songs yet at our house.

Oh my gosh, Deb, they haven't stopped here. It is non-stop peeping, cheeping,
chirping and more!

When the croaking starts, we'll be deaf by then. LOL

Western Bird-Voiced Treefrog - Hyla Avivoca Avivoca in a bird house. I know of two people who have had this type of treefrog take up residence in a bird house. One woman told me she had her bird house occupied by what she presumed was the same treefrog for 3 years.

Okay, now I've seen cute and I've seen cute, but Deb, that
is just adorable!

I'm actually having difficulty with frog identification. Have
you been able to identify all of your frogs, Deb?

I keep running into conflicting information. Just when I
think I've identified a frog, I find it on another site with
a different image. Though the colors fluctuate, some of
my id's are way off.

But. The Avivoca is one we definitely have. Hubby carefully
held this one for a pic. Believe it or not, this is the bottom of
Avivoca:

Well, I guess if I had more time I'd really spend more time on putting an I.D. to things.

You'll love this. When I ask hubby what a certain flower is? Innstead of telling me a name like daffodil. He'll say it's yellow! LOL

I'm still wondering who this frog is hiding out in the lotus leaves?

I love frogs but the black one is kinda creepy!!!

Ooh, you really have to scroll up and have a look at BeaHive's frog pic,
but click on it so you get the full effect in full size. Ewwww. He's a scary
fellow!

Deb, that is just too cute! I wonder if he is a young Hylidae (Hyla) in the
midst of turning colors?

It is my understanding that Cope's Gray Treefrogs can be green even
if they are called Gray.

Love those frogs!

That frog from last april was scary. I was told that the bull frog darkens in color during mating season. Looks like he was ready to go!
I had many "cute" ones in my pond last summer. So anxious
to see waht this spring brings. I have found a few here and there
"sleeping" and look forward to their awakening!!

This guy was resting his chin on a hosta last summer.

Beahive-love that picture-very cute!

Could these be baby frogs in waiting? Found them hanging on some algae and muck at the top of the falls when starting my pond cleaning today. Have left them alone for now. If they are frogs..they will stay..something else they will have to go!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ooh, Beahive, you may have babies in the making!

This morning, there were three Leopards in a nasty little pond in
need of cleaning. They were making all sorts of noise!

Not the best picture, but caught him with puffy 'cheeks'.

Thanks for the ID. Was not sure. Ohhh..I am going to a grandma!!
Can't wait to see the little polywogs. The leopard frogs are cuties!

Since these eggs are at the top of the falls..will the polywogs just flush down the stream when they hatch and find a new spot to lerk?
They are in weird spot.

This may be the babies Momma. Found her enjoying a few rays
just now. It looks like she is smiling. I Know I am ...sunshine does that to us folks in the PNW!

She is a big girl. Was waiting for her to climb up on the rock..but she had other ideas.

Here she is again today. She was up at the top of the falls enjoying another day of sunshine and 72 degs. Yeah!

Fantastic pictures. I have more spawn in my pond than ever before - at least 17 clumps!

I don't have any tadpoles yet (old photo), but I hear them singing their love songs.

Oh, Deb, too cute!

Have you named each of them yet? LOL

Yes, they are all named frog!

Here is a duel purpose feeder. Hummingbirds by day and tree frog by night.

I found this little guy the other night out in the pond. He is as big as my thumb with a croak that could shake the state. I have searched the internet and I have listened to many frog songs. No match!

Does anyone know what kind of frog Tiny is?

Bea, what a great picture. He looks quite comfy!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

These little frogs do not seem to be as skittish as the bull frogs.
He did not complain once when I held him!

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

I love everyone's frog pictures. We get a lot of these little green treefrogs in the summer. They are so cute. They are native I think. There are a lot of cuban treefrogs that are eating up these green ones in S. FL. I haven't seen any cuban treefrogs here yet.

This poor little guy got a rude awakening. I was trimming back the elephant ears that got frost bit and this little head popped up. It scared me because I thought I might of whacked it off lol. Now I know where they hide in the winter. He looks pretty upset lol.

Angel.. Those are great pics! Love the last one..horrible thought if you had gone an inch lower in your trimming! Glad he is safe!

Oh my gosh, what an adorable picture! That little head
peeping up out of the foliage. Too cute!
