Coffee and ..........May 25th, Thursday
Hi there!! Another sunny day Praise the Lord.
Keeping DR in my prayers, I too hope she doesn't feel guilty for going on her trip.
defoecat-Watch yourself with that mulch, that's a lot to move and you don't want to end up in rehab for the rest of the gardening season. DH Off fishing today huh? Just take it easy, wish I was closer i'm pretty good at shoveling. (You know my "special" talent...)
Mary-Glad the cow made it, I dont' think I could be an animal farmer. heck, i get emotional over losing a tomato plant! wish you'd shake that cold or whatever it is.
Elaine-Your moonflower is great! Another thing I've never grown and will have to try. Did the plant in the hanging basket get identified? I may need to go back and check.
I don't have much of a plan, my DLs from Marietta may arrive today, so those have to get planted. Oh shoot, and the 100 strawberry plants, and I don't have a bed tilled. Okay, now i have a plan!! BBL
I was really stiff last night, laid on the couch to watch tv for a while and got stuck there. My head wound hurt, my right ear and my shoulders and arm muscles hurt.
But we got the 2x10's all in place around the top of the structure. Rafters today and I will have to go to Lowes to get the roofing and install it before we put the sides up. Now that the heaviest bards are up, I hope things will move on a little quicker now.
I'm getting excited about this.......and the construction needs to be done so I can water the plants in my front yard on the sprinklers.
Molly
:^))))
Back from the campground again (this is getting a little old- getting up at 5:30 and hitting the road) This will be my last day doing it as we are picking up DGS from school and taking him with us to the campground. DH will do it alone tomorrow. Last night 8 of the females jammed into our trailer to watch the 2 hr American Idol - it was great fun, but 2 hrs is way too long!!
My gardens continue to be a yellow/green- not the dark green they usually are. I did put down some iron on some things yesterday - wonder how long it takes to green things up. This is a puzzle...
Maria-thanks for the gorgeous pic - The tree peony certainly gets large!! Dinner sounded outstanding as usual - but what is celery root? Like celery??
So sorry to hear of DR's DD passing. Hope she was able to enjoy her trip tho - but I imagine her thoughts were elsewhere..kind of bittersweet.
defoe- that preacher sounds like he needs to head for a different pasture- he sure isn't taking care of his flock. Yikes, you unloaded a ton of mulch!! I haven't even gotten any yet. Bet your muscles are screaming today...
IO1- I think your trellis won't be tall enough either!! I planted one moon flower last year and it climbed up the side of the house and about 10 ft more along the gutters. I put in three yesterday on a 12 ft trellis - hope they take off!
darius- I think the best thing for the 'kid' would be to get her out on her own....see the real world!! DH has a slug of a brother that just called saying he doesn't have any food- could we bring him some. DH feels real strong about this and refuses to give anything- tells him to get off his duff and get a job - he's too lazy to even apply for food stamps. It amazes me that the two of them are from the same family.
The maple trees here are so loaded with the helicopter things - our grass is brown with them and it is painful to go walking underneath them - they smash into you!! But they are fun to watch zinging down to earth.
I had a funny thing happen yesterday - I was watering with my new sprayer and a hummingbird came and drank from it. It was about 2 ft away from me - what fun!!
Time for some toast/peanut butter....all the snacks are out at the trailer!! rats.
ouch Molly I can just imagine. Be careful out there!! Are you posting photos of the progress?
Edited to add-
Sarv-when i was a kid we played for hours with those helicopter things! Isn't it funny how different things are, bet kids today don't know theyre out there and they sure can't compete with GameBoy....the fun we had with no gadgets at all!!

Wow that's huge! I'll check out curb appeal, never thought to look there. (You don't have a curb there do you??LOL))
Morning all. We had a good rain last night so I'm going out to plant and weed before it warms up too much. Will be back later to see what everyone's up to. Great job on the Orchid House Molly. Our DLs are doing well, but all the id has washed off the markers so it will be a guessing game on them until they bloom! Think I'll give them all a good drink of MG today too.

Good morning all. Been up since 7:00, takes several cups of coffee, and the newspaper to get me awake enough to talk.
Surprisingly, I am not sore at all this morning. The day's plan, grocery/errands, then home to finish the mulch. We had rain last night, and it looks like things just jumped.
Molly, if you continue to have headaches, better go get that checked out, you could have a concussion. The addition is really coming along. It is bigger than I imagined.
dmc, sounds like you have a full day. Strawberry plants, and nothing tilled.
Sarv, we have a small maple in the yard, and those thingies are flying all over the place here. Real cool about the hummingbird, that is a once in a lifetime experience. So when will the camping trip be "officially over"?
The preacher's boss called last night, me thinks preacher is in big doo doo.
Well, need to get a move on, so I can get home early, and finish the mulch.
BBL
Thanks all for your concern. I was actually quite lucky on the head wound. Now I see I should really get a hard hat.
I'm not really suffering from a headache per se, just sore on the area the board hit me. I realized later that it got me on the rear side of the head, the right ear and right shoulder. It's taken a couple days to feel all the effects of the incident.
If yall think the orchid house is big, by the photos, you should see it in person. I think the photos shrink its appearance slightly. Now when I walk out the door and stand and look around, it's really HUGE.
Molly
:^)))
Good Morning...
The (probable) listing agent was here yesterday afternoon. Market Analysis shows the house should fetch more than I think, but $15,000 less than my sister thinks. Average is 3 months on the market. Haven't signed an agreement yet. Agent wants the house ready to show when we do! So I guess today I will start touching up the paint where Bruce repaired drywall all over the house. I just hope the paint hasn't faded so much in 18 months that the new paint stands out. If so, we'll have to repaint the entire house. Fortunately it's all one color.
I hope we are getting the title to my truck transferred today, and new tags so I can drive again! Coupled with that will be an eye exam and new glasses so I can SEE to drive, LOL.
Sister is still home sick. I fed her echanicea. I did the vicks vaporub on my soles and then socks last night. Couldn't talk her into it. Don't see any effect this morning except my soles are softer! Probably do it again tonight.
Sarv, dmc... we have a few maples on the new place on the spring side. I noticed they were loaded with the 'helicopters'... how much fun we had as kids from things we made up ourselves!
Elaine, you can take cuttings of that Swedish Ive and start them in water. It will get rootbound in the hanging basket and eventually need replacing or dividing but it's easy from cuttings.
Waving to everyone else~~~~
Molly, you know that your orchid house might look terribly big now, but I bet once you get it finished and start putting things in it you will be surprised at how small it will seem...believe me, I remember when we were putting up a storage shed, I thought "jeez, this will hold so much" HA! did I get fooled, now we have 3 storage sheds out there...for some reason putting up the sides diminishes it expotentially.....
Kris
Mollymc sorry you got hurt hope it is healing fast pain gone..Your orchid house is going to be wonderful when finished i see that now..
Darius if sinus my hus. has worst in world he took Astrangulas was over 50% better but run out only had 3 week supply so have to buy another bottle for him.
Defoecat preachers goof up to we had one really shocked me well was wife but he never stopped her so.. things were suppose to be done money was gone they did not get done for the church.they fall to but are forgiven..Its just sad for the new ones to see..
Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.
Defo---- Let me say to start I am not a church person. The wife does enought of that for both of us. I have found that people will do one thing on sunday and another thing all week. We used to go to a sunday school class in St louis that the teacher was very good very serious about his beliefs. You know what he did for a Living??? He designed cruise missels. He was very serious and very proud of that also. Never seen conflict. Maybe your Preacher is the same way. Seems to me I read somewhere in the bible that your body is the temple so people need to live what they claim. I know the original 12 did.
"Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip"
Hope, this is the BEST one yet. LOL
Pati
I live in such a way, if I sold my parrot to the town gossip, they would be bored to tears!!
Hope, I am not condeming the preacher, but he made a committment to the family to preach that funeral, took the money, then cancelled. If anyone ever needs a pastor, death is certainly that time.
Well, just back from the grocery/errands, was sailing along great, getting it all done is such a quick time, then discovered a credit card that I had used was missing, so had to back track, dumped my purse on the seat of the car, not once but twice, and was getting ready to start making those calls, to get it cancelled, when I looked down, and there is a small gap in the seat, where the arm rest folds up, and I spy something. Can't get my hand down there, so get out of the car, on hands and knees, my head under the drivers seat, and lo and behold there is the credit card. Wonder what the passersby in that parking lot thought? Don't care, saved me much anguish.
Since I didn't finish the mulch last night, I need to go out and get that done. We had rain last night, about an inch, and things sure look good.
BBL
defoecat, no i did not think you were condeming him he certainly did very wrong .. he needs to apologize to the family and give htem there money back,and reason why he did not, shame on him.. its sad but alot of people do the Sunday thingy thats it..
Its so hot i feel like I'm in a steam room... walked to mail box and looked at yard groaned came in .. it is hot. this summer is going to be a doozer i do believe...
take care all..
Oz, didn't mean to ignore your comments, have serious case of CRS today, as verified by the credit card incident.
I guess we just have to remember that preachers are human, and as humans are subject to the same temptations as the general population. However, I don't believe that he needs to get away with this. Had I been this family, I would have been hurt and mad too. The deceased had been a member of our church for 15 plus years, and made many contributions, and therefore entitled to more respect that what was shown.
Well, off to do some more unloading mulch.
BBL
Hi All! Just lurking around today. Molly, sorry to hear about your injury! Hope you are feeling better -- your construction on your new place is really moving along well. :-)
Darius, can't wait for you to get in that beautiful new place of yours!
Sarv, you asked about celery root also called celerice. If you like the flavor celery you will like this root also. My mother always used it in salads and as a child liked it a lot and still do. I t also can be usedin stews with other root vegetables, it is very healthy, a cupof it is only 40 calories.
I takes longer to peel and slice then it does to cook, only about 10minutes then there is the famous french celeric salad that does not need any cooking.
Hello everyone. Hope, that parrot saying is a good one!
I know that preachers do indeed make mistakes, forget appointments, names, etc, but some of them should have a different job. Others are the greatest people you would ever want to know, concientious, honest, and compassionate. I hope this turns out well, of course the bereaved family cannot do anything about it, but I hope they get an apology. Several years ago our cousin's church had a similiar type of preacher, he was removed and replaced but it took a while to get through the red tape. Their district overseer had to get statements from a lot of people and then he had to meet with those in authority over him and get their recommendation before he could take action. The bad apple in the barrel is the one who gets noticed while the ones that do their jobs faithfully often don't get noticed or appreciated. So if you have a good minister, let him/her know that you are happy with the job he/she is doing. And as for me, I try to live like a Christian every day because I am one, and that is who I am, so acting in a manner inconsistant with the Lord's teachings is something I try not to do. Some of us are the only Bible folks will ever read.
Today I am weeding, planting, etc, and am on the fast track to get a whole lot of things done because I'm leaving for a 3 day ride series tomorrow. Although my energy level is not quite where it should be, I am hard to stop. I've ridden when I felt much worse than I do now, and really I am a lot better than I was a few days ago. Yesterday I got all the grass clippings spread around as mulch in the flower bed I weeded. Big flower bed, it took all the clippings I had and still wants more. It will get them next week. I will be coming home on Tuesday.
Molly, I looked at the thread about your orchid house, that picture that inspired you is beautiful. I can hardly wait to see the finished product filled with plants with a nice place for you to sit and relax in the shade. I hope your recent owies heal up quickly, but they do at least serve as a reminder of what can happen.
Back to the great outdoors, ~~~ bye for now.
I'm all cleaned up and look half way decent - just in time to go back out to the campground and it in the smokey fire~ They are forecasting strong storms tonight- 60 mph winds etc. We'll probably play games inside.
oz - my best friend was married to a minister - they were looking forward to collecting social security together and traveling. Well, he left her for someone he was counseling. She is now collecting SS by herself, and has had to go back to work to make ends meet. This can happen to anyone, but I hold ministers a cut above - what a disappointment. He still has his mug in the local papers for various things - I can hardly look at it.
Just talked to my DM and she is not feeling well at all. Oh great...now I will worry about her!! They were coming out to the campground, but she said she couldn't even walk 10 steps.
Maria- thanks for the info about the celery root - I like celery - will have to check it out!
I closed up the greenhouse so it doesn't fly away while we are gone. I lugged 8 flats up to the house and put them under the deck -they will be protected from the hot sun that way. I am completely out of room, so I will probably need to give some away or let them dry up. Eyes were bigger than my gardens!!
I'm having two s'mores tonight!! Hopped on the scale and it is the lowest I've been in months!! Pigging out will probably bring it back up!! LOL
Back again, although I can barely see due to dialated eyes. Problem with quickly deteriorating vision is cataracts although not bad enough for surgery. I'll pick out frames and order them Saturday AM. Separate pair for driving. I just don't do bifocals well, rather have 2 pair.
Couldn't get tags today... need an affadavit notarized that it is indeed the right VIN. Judi (sister) has no more time off until she gets back from Texas early June. Sigh.
I do not like to go there but I must, just came back from the cemetary, planted flowers for Memorial day , most of all for him,. I could hardly see, tears kept streaming down my face, a new flag was put there for all the veterans, what a sight, so many have gone now who fought World War II.
Well, the mulch is still waiting. It got so hot this afternoon, I decided to wait until later, maybe it will cool off some. Did get some daylilies planted, a little picket fence in front of a new bed (to keep DH's hounds out), put out some more garden art, and am finished with those 2.
A store in town today was having a sale, of all summer clothes, so I bought 3 pairs of capri's and only found 1 shirt. Now to look for some shorts. I didn't get any volunteers to come loot my closet of the things I can't wear! LOL
Well, got the grill going, gonna put on a chicken breast (huge one) marinated in a garlic/herb marinade, salad, baked potato, and garlic bread, strawberry shortcake for dessert. Come on by in about an hour, help yourself.
Maria, you're right, he does have that devilish look.....and very handsome too.
I will miss going to the Memorial Day ceremonies this year. My late DH is buried in the family cemetary in North Carolina and I can't make the trip this year. He fought WWII in the Navy, in the Pacific. He served the entire war without coming home once, and was in Japan for the final surrender.
His family were Pennsylvania Dutch (German) that settled in Pennsylvania in the early 1800's. He was so proud to have served his country and Memorial Day, and 4th of July were very important events for him...he always remembered his comrades...those that returned and those that didn't.
Thanks for sharing your day, and the picture of the handsome G.I.
Pati
Thanks, Patti,, The war, like all wars are terrrible, but in the final end I met this wonderful American soldier with that glint in his blue eyes I will never forget
It's easy to see why you fell for that handsome soldier, Maria!! Thanks for sharing your photo of him with us. I know you miss him every day, and always will. He must have been one of a kind,the way you describe him. I would have had to ask him to ditch the cigar though!!
Had a fairly busy day, cleaned out two big beds of crabgrass, that stuff was about 18 inches high already, but with the rain, most of it came up without too much muscle. DH was going to go pick up some more wood chips after work but we got another downpour, so it's postponed until next week. Or Saturday. Got a little sun on my arms so my farmer tan is on it's way.
Went and looked at kittens this afternoon too. Honestly, some of the people who breed don't know much. She didn't have siamese,she had ragdolls, very furry (like I need more cat hair!! And two from her other litter were pretty furry and had white paws, so they were snow shoe ragdolls. They were so cute, but not what I wanted. Noticed that Sammi's owner has another litter, so I'm going to give her a call. DH said we should have bought his sister when we got him.
Got home, ran the inadequate vacuum cleaner through four rooms. Reheated the Popeye's chicken I picked up while I was in their neighborhood, dragged out yesterday's potato salad, and voila! dinner. Tomorrow morning is golf, so I hope these sudden showers are done by then.
Darius, I couldn't manage bifocals either, they make me sea sick! And I had to argue long and loud to get my lenses set up for the computer monitor which is slightly more distant than what you need for reading. Now they make them especially for that but twenty years ago they didn't give you the option of telling them the correct distance. My monitor was on my desk, and I had files and paperwork in front of it, so it was arm's length away.
Saw yellow jackets buzzing around near the eaves today. Every one I kill now is 40 that won't be harassing me in July. No mosquitos yet though. Last year was so dry we didn't have too many, I think they will make up for it this year. And they are so fond of me. Ugh.
Molly, the orchid house is progressing so fast...it does look huge, but after you start putting plants and seating in there, it will be much cozier.
I see some of my last year's mini pear tomatoes have reseeded themselves again. In a not too good location. I think I can move them but not sure to where.
Have a good ride, Mary, glad you are feeling somewhat better. Tell AP to take good care of your DH while you are gone.
~~~ to everyone, need to go set up the coffee maker, and then head for the couch, so the kitties have a place to nap.
Later
Sheila
Sheila, ,just want you to know he never smoked cigars, I asked why he had a cigar in his mouth, he said to shock his mother , lol, he probably did a few other things that he would never tell his mother, lol
Maria, I love the picture. I have several of my dad during the wars that he fought in also. It has always amazed me how the always look healthy and on the most part happy while surrounded by such gloom. I too went to the cemetery today. Mom died two years ago today and with Memorial Day a couple days away I place a large bouquet of fresh flowers with them. Included Roses for mom and Daisies for dad.
DR, so sorry for the loss of your father. Bless you and your family. At least by going to Hawaii you were able to allow him one of his last wishes by knowing you are happy.
Darius I hope the vision problems clear up soon and you get the new glasses. I was shocked at my last eye appointment that they didn't increase the strength. Thought that was the norm.
Sarv, I tried to explain the way you camp and that I would love it if we could do that. He says it defeats the whole purpose of getting away. I think it would calm my nerves some knowing my animals were okay.
Molly such progress on the orchid house. I am sure it is going to be stunning when it is full of plants and orchids. Please be careful. Now you can honestly say it was built with blood sweat and tears. Rather have not had you hurt in the process though.
Mary, stay dry and safe on the ride and I hope it is an enjoyable one for you...
Okay, explain to me how tomato horn worms find my plants. No one else for at least five house in any direction has a yard never mind tomato plants. I have never seen one on the ground only on my plants. How in the heck do they get there. How do they know I have tomatoes???? Private bug patrols???????
I love celeric root. I use it in stew and to add a bit of flavor to cooked cabbage.
Defoe, preacher deserved to have a voiced raised at least. I hold my religious advisors on a higher standard then most. He should have known that the family needed him when he accepted the money and by accepting that money was just like saying that he would be there. Very sad to hear....
Well I need to go out and water a bit. Getting tired of watering twice a day already and basically summer is not even here yet. I am really going to be whining come July.....
Hope all have the chance to sit outside with a cool breeze and a loved one close.
Casey
i was not going to tell this story but my second husband says he was called to preach his mother told him that day and night.. so when we married my pastor helped him to get his license and all. but 2 weeks after we were married his mother told him I was a Jezebel-- this country shy mouse. so funnyI'm so quiet scared everything till 4 yrs ago when cancer visted me now i say what i want no bull from no one this mouse got up stood up!!!..He left then after week came back i tried for 5 yrs... .. well he was not called to be a minister had beautiful voice when he sang you would just cry,, to shorten this one day i went to grocery store there behind a store i saw his truck i whipped around yes he and this female were in a postion he tried to tell me he was helping her with advice ect.. so end of marriage they got married yr laterand after one yr. she told him he was a wimp mama's boy kicked him out.. he tried to see me few yrs ago . iwas married of course then he had heart surgery thought was getting better sudenly he died alone in a apt.. So one never knows about a man of God is or is not.. so i bored you all to tears but htese things happen with them to..
Sarv48- I'm so sorry for your friend i hope he did not hurt her in her walk, and faith .. and she finds a wonderful mate..
Maria, thanks for the phoros. Somewhere I have one of my dad in khaki shorts shaving out of his helmet in the Pacific.
Casey., the tomato hook worm is from a huge moth that finds the tomatoes where ever the grow, and then there is the same for tobacco but it is brown as where the tomato one is green. I do not think you ever see the moths in the day time.
Hi all
Well we had a *bad* storn come through and it struck a transformer right down the street from us. Took out the power, and we've been without power for a couple of hours. :-( The good thing is ... I got taken out for supper. Told the DH I couldn't even use the microwave. LOL He took me to Texas Road House and had a nice little 6 oz sirloin that was actually quite good with a sweet potato and salad.
I've missed out on a lot, so I'm just going to wave tonight. All I want is a bath and when I'm rested ... I might come back. If I don't make it ... hope everyone has a good night with peaceful dreams. :)
~Elaine~
Evening everyone,
Sarv, that was really neat about the thirsty hummingbird. The closest I've ever been to one was several feet away when it decided to visit a patch of jewelweed not too far from my composter.
Casey, sorry about the tomato hornworms. They are nasty things --- I hate to pick them off, but haven't had to do so very often. The last time I found one, I'd have never seen it except that the white parasitic wasp lavae were sticking out all over it like porcupine quills. I just left that one alone as it was already done for and I figured that having the predators hatch out would be just fine for my garden.
M5, sorry you haven't found the "right" kitten yet. I'm sure you will in time. We were just offered another foundling. Somebody dumped a litter of four kittens in a dumpster behing one of the local malls. I keep forgetting to tell DH about it to see if he wants to adopt one. We really don't need any more vet bills, but awwww, kittens! We'll see. The full grown cats who already live here will be much less than thrilled if we do take one in.
Maria, thanks for sharing. Wish I could help to lift your spirits, but fear there's nothing I can do. I know that many holidays must be very hard for you at the moment.
Good luck with all that mulch, d'cat. Do you ever sit still for more than a minute at a time? Wish I could take you up on the offer of the strawberry shortcake. Oh yeah, I don't think that I ever answered your question about how we make it. We've always used a biscuit rather than cake. I used to use the Bisquick recipe with the added butter and sugar, but generally don't add butter any more. It will be quite a while before the new strawberry plants bear any fruit. The Alpine strawberries have begun to set fruit though and the plants look good, so we should have some of those in a week or so. They're so tiny that you need loads of them to do anything with though.
~~~~~~~~to everyone I haven't addressed individually. Thought you might like to see what the inside of my greenhouse looks like at the moment, but found that I couldn't get it all in one picture. Here's one showing some of the plants on one side (I quickly ran out of space on the shelves and had to put some on the floor to either side.) Of course, the minute I opened the door, Mr. Slim, self-appointed gardener's assistant had to go in first to check that all was as it should be.
Sweet dreams to all.
There is no way, that I can comment to everyone. I did want to comment to Maria, what a wonderful picture. I am so glad that you have something that no one can take away from you--memories. The memorial day celebration at the local cemetry will be Sunday. Still have services and a decent crowd.
Hope, glad that you "caught him in the act" and was spared years of misery.
After supper, even before I cleaned the kitchen, rain was threatening, so dashed out, and planted some daylilies that I got today, and some other lily got in a trade, finished unloading the mulch, then in to do the dishes, and take a much needed shower. It was unusually hot today,so almost knew that storms/rain would follow. Under a tornado watch for a few hours. It stormed, thunder, lightning and wind and rain, but not bad. Right now the thunder is rolling again, so may be in for some more "weather".
M5, you mean this person advertised Siamese, and had something else? Makes you wonder where her education came from, and more importantly how she can not know they are not Siamese? Don't get me started on the people who operate puppy/cat mills. They are only out for the $$, and don't really care about the animals.
Well, I am so tired, that it is gonna be bed for me and soon.
I01, storms aren't all bad. Supper out, that surely can't be considered a bad thing. I'll take it anytime, don't care what causes it. LOL
Well, hope all has a good restful night. Still have a hard day tomorrow, but hopefully will be rested and ready to go.
Night all.
McCool, yes I sit at night, usually read, mostly gardening magazines. If I sit too long, get sleepy, or nod off. Gotta keep moving, that way no one can shoot me!! Moving target and all! LOL.
I still have a hard day tomorrow, doing the mulch on DM"s flower beds I created last fall. Need to get more annuals to go in one.
Mr. Slim is a good looking fellow. My Miss Boots, doesn't care for gardening, but Mr. B is always right by my side!!. I call him the supervisor!!
Well, now I really am off to bed.
~~~ to all I didn't speak to individually.
Good night.
We'll see ya over here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/607347/
