The closest I've ever been to one was several feet away when it decided to visit a patch of jewelweed not too far from my composter. Casey, sorry about the tomato hornworms. They are nasty things --- I hate to pick them off, but haven't had to do so very often. The last time I found one, I'd have never seen it except that the white parasitic wasp lavae were sticking out all over it like porcupine quills. I just left that one alone as it was already done for and I figured that having the predators hatch out would be just fine for my garden. M5, sorry you haven't found the "right" kitten yet. I'm sure you will in time. We were just offered another foundling. Somebody dumped a litter of four kittens in a dumpster behing one of the local malls. I keep forgetting to tell DH about it to see if he wants to adopt one. We really don't need any more vet bills, but awwww, kittens! We'll see. The full grown cats who already live here will be much less than thrilled if we do take one in. Maria, thanks for sharing. Wish I could help to lift your spirits, but fear there's nothing I can do. I know that many holidays must be very hard for you at the moment. Good luck with all that mulch, d'cat. Do you ever sit still for more than a minute at a time? Wish I could take you up on the offer of the strawberry shortcake. Oh yeah, I don't think that I ever answered your question about how we make it. We've always used a biscuit rather than cake. I used to use the Bisquick recipe with the added butter and sugar, but generally don't add butter any more. It will be quite a while before the new strawberry plants bear any fruit. The Alpine strawberries have begun to set fruit though and the plants look good, so we should have some of those in a week or so. They're so tiny that you need loads of them to do anything with though. ~~~~~~~~to everyone I haven't addressed individually. Thought you might like to see what the inside of my greenhouse looks like at the moment, but found that I couldn't get it all in one picture. Here's one showing some of the plants on one side (I quickly ran out of space on the shelves and had to put some on the floor to either side.) Of course, the minute I opened the door, Mr. Slim, self-appointed gardener's assistant had to go in first to check that all was as it should be. Sweet dreams to all. |
