Morning Glories 2006 #1

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Well I have been waiting for Emma to start the Morning Glory treads again............yesterday I got a D-mail where I was asked to do it. Both Emma and Woofens are currently up to their necks in extra work I sure hope they get back at full speed here in the MG forum soon.
Here we can share our daily life, successes and failures with our attempts to grow these beauties. BUT most important of all.............ALL of us want to see pictures :0))
Happy gardening
Janett

Edited: I meant the white with blue speckled JMG, you sneaked in the Mt. Fuji-like picture in as I was typing this message.

Joseph, notice how much nicer the newer leaves are?

Yes, they look less curled up, indeed, almost velvet-like.

Ipomoea Cairica, first bloom this year, hopefully it will have some pollenator this year.. last year no seeds..

Thumbnail by Gourd

That's a great picture, Gourd! Does that species have a fragrant flower?

Joseph

Goodlettsville, TN(Zone 6a)

My first Ipomoea indica bloom of the year. Lots more buds so there are lots more blooms to come.

I posted the early seedling pictures of these morning glories in a separate thread I started to show mgs I started indoors. I finally was able to plant them out in separate containers yesterday. Here is Ipomoea "speciosa" from South Africa. Love the leaf form. Ron's identification of this one is Convolvulus capensis based on examination of the seed.

Here is the Ethiopian Ipomoea that Gourd had such a lovely picture of last year. It is growing strong and sending out quite a few vines from a central point. It ought to fill up the 4' tomato cage I have provided for it for support.

Hi Joseph,
LOoks good.. and healthy.. can hardly wait to see photos. I have not sowed any MG seeds this year except Joyce Cobb, the rest reseeded on their own. Just did not have the time this year.

But the perrenials are doing great. That one above I. Cairica did not have any fragrance that I could tell. Had another bloom today and stuck my nose right in there and NOTHING.. ..

Here is Hewittia malabarica, also from South Africa. It too is producing vines out from the seed leaf node, and seems to be enjoying the 80+ degree F. weather we had today.

Hi Gourd,

Too bad about the lack of fragrance...I just had to ask!

I'll have more photos as the plants develop. My Ipomoea lindheimeri flowered last week and has made several fragrant flowers already!

Zone envy big time here. It is still to cold for them , high temps is around 60 and tomorrow night they expect the low to be close to freeze. (Ironnights)
Normally the temps this time of year is pending between 65-70 and nights a little lower, but not this cold.
I had planned to sow my MG:S direct outdoors but I have made the decision of preplanting them today indoors.

I cant belive that its this cold and my DD only have this and next week in scool left before summerholiday.

Joseph! have you got the "Chocolate" to grow yet ? If you have dont put her in full sun she doesnt like it one bit, she needs shade. I had mine out when the weather was warmer and where the leaves where white she got sunburns pretty bad. I tried both full morning sun and full afternoon sun.
Janett

Janett,

I got the seeds going today. Let's see how they do. Did you put the plant out with a lot of leaves when you moved it from indoors to outdoors? If so, did you put it directly out into the sun without gradually increasing the sun exposure? Just curious why the mg would scald like that; I always thought mgs were sun lovers.

Joseph

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

I thought since it was in full morning sun (from 5AM to 1pm )in the window I grew it in and the temp indoors and out doors had been the exact same for a week and on the day I took it out that it would stand it but no. I tried to gradually try the afternoon sun but it showed the same burns on the other leaves it got.
However I don't know if its different if the from get go grow in the sun. remember this is a full grown plant. And since you and I have seeds from the same source I wanted you to know.
Janett
Edit to say the last month ++ I havent use any shading or curtaines for this MG. however come to think of it I did shade the pot indoors but not outdoors. Its in a big plastic pot

The MG's are looking nice(!)...

Kevin - is that Ipomoea indica plant started from seed(?)...

Janett_D - the windowglass filters the ultra-violet light,so the plants grown indoors have not yet developed a tolerance for the ultra-violet in the sunlight,so they would still need to be exposed gradually to the strong ulta-violet rays of the sunlight, like Joseph suggested...

TTY,...

Ron

Janett,

The seeds are showing signs of life after soaking for 3 hours. The seed coat disintegrated and now I have them in the sacred baggie method. LOL Sorry was out in the sun too long today.

Joseph

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Lol Joseph. don't get sunburned you too. 3 hours. boy they are eager to grow

Ron. for how long am I supposed to expose them at the time. 1h 2h ?? and up to how long(days) before I can have them safely/permanently outside. Didnt take into count on the UV light must have left my braine in bed rotflol. Honostly to much to do and to little time to do it in.
The Chocolate is safely indoors and is recuperating (sp) just fine but it starting to get TOO big and I don't want to pinch it anymore.
Janett

Goodlettsville, TN(Zone 6a)

Ron,
That I. indica is not from seed. It is from a plant that I overwintered indoors.

Longtime members of this forum will remember the Blue Dawn flower that I had climbing my hickory tree last year, http://convolvulaceae.home.comcast.net/Convolvulaceae/Ipomoea_indica/
which came from rootings that this forums best trader sent me.

In the fall I put some of that plant's ground runners into pots and they rooted. Before the first frost I cut those runners loose from the main plant and brought the pots indoors.

I have started some I. indica from seed that you sent me. I have some photos that I'll be posting shortly (no blooms for a while yet, though).

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Kevin, I am not a long timer here but remembet you pics anyway since I read all the treads and post on this forum before I jumped in head first. They are still gorgeous.

Joseph......I started 19 different MG:s this morning(soake), tonight I will pot some of them up. I hope to be if flower heaven later this summer.

Kevin,
I am glad to know that you successfully over-wintered your Blue Dawn. Such an enjoyable vine isn't it!

Here is photo of mine that just started blooming this week. Photo taken yesterday. Just love this MG.

Janett - I owe you oodles of D-mail answers.
But for now wanted you to know that I am so happy that you are hosting the MG Threads this year. You are the best!

Hi Emma, glad you are back
Nice looking flowers you got there and the "Rosita" WOW to that foliage.
What colour is Rosita going to be?
Do you think your Milky will stay solid white?
Janett

Very nice leaf form on Rosita, Emma! Any flower buds on it yet??

Joseph
