Hooray, we enjoyed the first harvested cucumber tonite! It was delicious. I set out 8 plants ( store bought~ burpless ) and one plant took off. It shot straight up a four foot cattle panel and immediately started producing flowers and long slender fruit. The other plants are still hovering 6 - 12 inches off the ground and blooming. I mentioned this unusual one to my 88 year old gardening Mom who lives 1100 miles north of me. She said it sounded like it was a zuchinni plant. I watched with baited breath, some days thinking it looked squash other days cucumber. Couldn't stand it any longer. I cut an 8 inch long victim and sniffed. Cucumber! It was so tender and not bitter and delicate and tasty... I wonder if I will be able to harvest seed from this one plant. The leaves are huge, dark green with a sturdy vine & great fruit. Any thoughts?
The first cucumber (and it was !)
Burpless = Seedless
Seeds that are produced will be entirely different than the parent plant.

I was afraid of that... You know it actually had seeds but I guess that means they will be sterile. I figured that one may have been a rogue. It was good though and I will enjoy many more from the looks of it. Appreciate the response. Thank you. I grew up in the New Ulm, Minnesota area and my Mom still lives there. I was blessed to have moved south over 30 years ago. Hope to be there for a visit in June. Order some nice weather please?
It was around 85º today. Windy, but otherwise nice.
I am roughly 30 miles straight south of New Ulm. D-mail me & stop in, it's always nice to meet another DG'er.

Thanks for the invite, our plans are still only hopes. No promises either as we have scads of family and friends around the state and little time to do it with. If time should allow, I would contact you. I am always envious of the rich soil, long summer days and brilliant flower colors you Minnesotans are savoring. Unfortunately, most of your lovely plants won't take the heat and poor soil conditions here. Had to relearn gardening things in the south after many failures. I just hate the cold, short winter days and can't imagine surviving growing up there. All my best Pod
