Big Holes in Hollyhock Leaves

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

I looked for caterpillars and didn't see any (this was at the end of the day) ... the holes are huge! Like big bites out of the edges but also holes in the middle ... quite a lot of them ... any idea what could be eating them? They look decimated ...

I've noticed a similar problem with my Hollyhocks. I'm not certain, but I suspect Japanese beetles. Saw one drowning in the birdbath yesterday. I've had success with a dusting of Sevin.

My hollyhocks have been something's dinner as well! I've had this problem every year. Guess I'll spray them when the rain goes away (hint, hint Mother Nature!!!!) Tamara

read the thread on earwigs, symptoms sound familiar, just a thought.

This has been an ongoing problem with my hollyhocks. Eventually the leaves will be a skeleton. Hoping someone has some ideas. I have seen a wedge shape bug, about 1/16 " on them. Sevin got rid of them but, they are back after a heavy rain.

Don't know about your place, but here at mine, the snails love them.

mine is eaten by snails, early in the morning when they cralw up the post where the hollyhock is planted, I can see them

I now know that we are having a huge infestation of gypsy moths ... and I believe the larva is what has been eating my hollyhock leaves .... they were so small in the beginning I didn't really see them ... amazing how much damage a small creature can do ... they are voracious and have decimated our oak and birch trees (and one of my roses) ... once they reach adulthood they'll stop eating, but in the meantime it's been unbelievable ... truly a plague!

On other subject ... a tiny worm (I mean really tiny) has been severing my penstemon stems ... another destructive tiny creature ...

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

I have the same problem. Holes all over the leaves. Otherwise they are starting to bloom and some are over 6" tall and loaded with stocks. I am going to try some treatments and see what will happen. I also think I have some spider mites, I will see what happens when I spray the WHOLE garden.

If you find any thing to help your plants - or get rid of the pests - please post.

Thanks, Marie
