I know ... I *said* I was leaving ... but Defoe I'll take some of those strawberries! LOL
Coffee and......Tuesday May 16
Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone! We are hoping now that we have funds (or will by Friday) that we can close sooner that June 15. ThaT MIGHT give us time for a summer vegetable garden! Too late for tomatoes, but maybe a few other things.
Hey, we haven't put our garden in yet- you still have time!!
Sarv, almost as short a season as you have! I;m thinking maybe 5b but hoping for 6a!!!!
Ah, so darius, you and your sister found a place to buy! Congratulations! Is it in the VA mtns., close to NC (Boone)? Is this the one with 2 cottages? If not, what did you get? How much land?
I missed all of yesterday's posts. I started a regular schedule at the new library today. Last week was all moving and the grand opening. When I got off work, I picked up John and we went to see the work on my house.
Much to my shock, some critter is devastating my gardens. Two rose bushes have been bitten underground, just beneath the graft. Other holes are everywhere. This is entirely too big to be a mole. He burrows, but doesn't leave hills like a mole. We don't know what to do.
I had some moth balls and sprinkled them around the rest of the rose buses but have no idea if that will help. The teeth marks look as big as a big rat. I posted an inquiry in the rose forum but if anyone has any idea what's going on, please let me know.
Hi There,
Just finished teaching for the evening.
Don't think I told you that DD and DGD stopped by late on sunday with a Mother's Day gift. They got me knee pads for the garden and a Citronella oil lantern to help keep the mosquitos (which are now out in force) down. I'll try the lantern, but suspect the Off candle lantern I already have might work better. Hopefully one of these days it won't be overcast all day and the mossies will only be a problem in the evening.
DD#2 just sold her condo in Vancouver. She's had it less than 1 1/2 years and sold it for more than $100,000 higher than what she paid for it ($32,000 above her asking price). Second time she's flipped properties and done well in the last two years. Last time she sold a small house and bought two condos - one to rent and one to live in. But in recent months, she decided to move in with boyfriend and they are now looking to buy a house together. His condo is bigger than hers; so they are living there. This kid did NOT taking the easy road to fiscal good management; so there's hope out there for those of you who are desparing about a younger generation.
She and BF come for a visit on Saturday and next week we will all go to his parents' cottage which is a bit west of Algonquin Park in Ontario. Is there an announcement coming?????? Got my car back and it's in good shape for the trip. Good I asked for an alignment. They found some problems with one tie-rod end and something on the driver's side was seized up; so it took a bit longer. The car, given that I use winter tires and wheels for close to 6 months every year, seems to have an awful appetite for expensive tires. I decided it had to be because the dealer wasn't keeping a good eye on the alignment. The streets are so bad here all winter long, I think most every vehicle needs one in the spring.
Bonnie, what a bummer about the car! I sure hope you get it sorted out soon. Aren't police involved when you get a car towed around there? If it was that close to home, it's surprising that they didn't contact you.
Congratulations to those that have their gardens in! I'm not there yet. But this weekend does mark the "official" safe planting time up here. I would generally wait a few more weeks before putting in tomatoes and peppers though. I did get an hour or so in the garden this afternoon. Planted a Hibiscus and transplanted a Japanese Red Baron Grass which is a bit marginal in this zone. I've had it for a couple of years, but lost the first one. It occurred to me that right alongside of my house is probably a zone warmer.
I also planted a daylily, dug out a dead rose, planted a new one and did some basic weeding. And I planted three hanging baskets. Little by little, I'm getting there. Haven't heard anything about a church garden tour this year; so I don't think there is any real deadline.
woodspirit, what a bummer to have the roses destroyed like that. I hope you solve the mystery of what is happening to them.
Bonnie - just read about your strawberries. Yumm! It will be awhile - maybe another month before we start to see local strawberries. But we ARE starting to see local asparagus. :-)
Well, better get on with things.
TTYL or tomorrow.
Ann
Well I'm back for a quick check in. Our company came, and they ordered pizza tonight. It was actually quite good plus I didn't have to cook. :) We get together every Tuesday and the past 2 I've fixed something so they wanted to do this time. That was just fine with me. LOL
Ann, sounds like you're coming along with your garden. Also Sounds like DD#2 has done quite well with her wheeling and dealing! Oh, and knee pads ... how thoughtful. I need those when I clean house sometimes. I like to get on my hands and knees when I mop. :)
Defoe, do you have to plant strawberries when it's cool weather? I know it's usually March when they come up from Plant City, FL ... and they are sooooo good! I just love those little pots called strawberry pots. Could you really grow them in there? They're so prettyThe DH's hours have changed, so I've been having to get up earlier. I sure don't like it as I'm a night person. He'd let me stay in the bed but I like to see him off.
Suzie ... it's *really* good to see you back. We always miss you when you can't post. That nursery sounds like a piece of heaven to me. The DH and I always do Relay also. Kota just loves it. She thinks sleeping in the tent is "something special"! I've had so many people in my life that's been affected by Cancer it's something near and dear to my heart.
Well, am making this short for now. Am waving to everyone. Will try to come back after I see what else is going on. :)
~~~Elaine !
Had a long post all typed out and wanted to add a picture. Dont know what happens but its all gone now. I did mention all or at least most of you. So now I have no time so just ~~~~~ to all.
Darius and Molly, wonderful news for both of you.
Hope all have a wonderful night and a better tomorrow...
Casey
Waving back, Casey ~~~
Hope you have a good night. Don't let the frustration of losing the post keep you from sleeping.
Good night to all the rest of you too. Gonna watch some news for a few minutes and get to bed.
Ann
Nothing exciting. Weather quite hot, for us.Cleaning up the shop and yard, trying to shingle the back half of the gateway but a climbing rose with horrible thorns is in the way. Well, the Ginkgo tree, pulmanarias,Peonies in bud and other plants seemj to enjoy getting in the way too. Great news about Darius and the loan approval. Hope now she will have a home she can remain in and do all the neat stuff she does. Best of everything to all.
Wow, Molly, that looks like quite a haul! How are all the daylillies coming along, by the way? The orchid house should come right along now that there's no red tape in the way.
Darius, so glad things have turned the corner for you. I just hope that having the "kid" included now doesn't make life more difficult for you and your sister.
Bonnie, so sorry all of you had to go through more of an ordeal, but at least it doesn't sound as though your MIL is in as bad shape as you all feared. Hope the car situation has been sorted out by now (and that it doesn't cost as much for a tow there as it does up here!)
M5, I just had to read today's "Sammi report" out loud to my mother. She got quite a kick out of it too. We have three cats in the household so we could envision the whole episode quite clearly!
Suzieq, that sounds like a great nursery! I've never seen anything like that.
V-ann, good luck, hope the award is yours --- you know everyone here thinks it should be.
Maria, lovely pond you have there. Hey, did you get a stray sunbeam or two out that way this afternoon? I thought that my eyes were playing tricks on me. (THEN I thought of my greenhouse, all closed down tight and hoped I wouldn't find cooked plants on my return home! Everything looked okay though.)
I01, glad you enjoyed your company and didn't have to work in the kitchen this time either. I enjoy cooking for company, but it can get a bit hectic sometimes.
sarv, tgif, Mary, woodspirit, Casey, and Solitare ~~~~~~~~~~goodnight to you all. I'm afraid I've run out of steam.
No sun here, McCool, since it is already Wednesday here I hope I will see the sun when it comes up
Hey I am back. The supper was good, and a friend stopped by about that time, but he had already eaten. So DH and I ate, and chatted with him at the same time.
The owner of the property adjacent to the right of way called this afternoon, late, and apologized for having the car towed. She offered to pay for the tow and storage fees, and we just might take her up on it. Will probably be about $200.00. It's not really the money involved, but instead of calling the Sheriff's office to complain, it would have been just as easy to call the County Clerk's office to see who the car belonged to, and then calling us. DH probably should have called her and told her what happened and that it may be a day or so before he got around to taking care of it, because it is a second car.
The strawberry crop is a complicated matter. DSIL had some strawberries about 4 years ago, didn't maintain them, and the weeds took over. She moved some of them to a garden that DMIL calls her's except the land belongs to DH and me. So when the strawberries get ripe, DMIL picks what she wants then turns the beds over to me. Last year DSIL went to pick some berries, and DMIL told her that she couldn't have any. She looks at the strawberry patch as a "gift" from DSIL, and is hers. So since DMIL is in the hospital, I went and picked the berries, froze them, and when she gets home, will offer them to her. Ain't gonna get in the middle of that fight, if I can't get the extras, will go to an orchard and buy some. Strawberries aren't worth having hard feelings over.
susieq, glad to see you emerge from where ever. Stop in when you can and visit a spell.
Woodspirit sorry about the roses, hope that you can find the culprit and do justice to it.
Carat, so the internet is not so friendly some times. I know the feeling, whenever that happens here I almost go ballistic. I have found that in the long run, posting the picture, then adding the message, makes for less loss.
Darius, still can't wrap my mind around your news. So your sage of homelessness may be over.
McCool, so the sun peeked out a little, hope it is not sending false hope to you up east. M5, is really gonna be in trouble when the ASPCA comes calling.
Sarv, I laughed about DM thinking you had a boyfriend on the internet. Sometimes I think DH gets sort of suspicious. Chat rooms, LOL, invite her to sit beside you some time and look at the chat. What a bummer, I couldn't get into chat tonight, so read some, and watched tv.
Today was election day in Kentucky, so had to watch the returns to see how many votes I lost.
So late today, about 7:00 DSIL called to say that DMIL was being released from the hospital. She brought her home and DH is spending the night with her. What ever happened to day time releases? I know that she will probably rest better at home, but wouldn't it have been just as easy to release her tomorrow morning?
Well, it is getting late, and need to do some other stuff before hitting the bed. Me and Mr. B. will have a lovely peaceful night without DH's snoring!!
So hope you all have a good restful night, and be rearing to go tomorrow morning. That is grocery/errand day for me, so may be a bit late checking in.
well this got my mind off things but can't remember the comments going to make that i can relate to. i sure hope the coyotes don't get the sheep that stuck in my head..strawberries did to love them why did.. so i should not have butt in.. But everyone have a great blessed Wednesday..
Went to bed early last night so missed setting up the daily, but I don't think anyone is up yet except me and the dogs.
So let's take a trip over here to chat a bit: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/603745/
