I've used row covers on some of my veggies for the first time this year. I understand about removing them for the bees, etc. to pollinate the blooms.
But what about broccoli? Do I need to remove the row cover now that the heads are beginning to form? I know they don't need to be pollinated but didn't know what other requirements they might need when forming the heads.
I hope the row covers have kept out some of the egg laying flying inscets, but I am having troubles with earwigs under them. Because of the earwigs I have held back on mulching. Any suggestions?
row covers
nope, not necessary to remove the covers off your brocolli. Keep in mind however that some row covers hold in (and somtimes increase) the heat...something you don't want for your brocolli as it will tend to make them bolt. You should have rec'd some temp info when you rec'd your covers (or if you ordered them perhaps you can check the catalog for pertinent info). Happy growing!
Oh yeh, as for the earwigs I wouldn't worry too much about them unless they are there in droves (they can actually be benficial). If you don't want to spray poisons then put down some diatomacious earth...or you can trap them in rolled up newspaper (they go in there to hide during the day) then shake them out somewhere else, or drown them.
