Nursery Tour in Austin

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm the one who dropped a bag of Red Stripe cannas on Ampy at the RU and ran! lol They are beautiful and reproduce like crazy. I started about six years ago with three rhizomes that I received in a trade with a fellow in the North. I have shared a ton with local friends and given them to anyone who would stand still long enough at two RU's. I still have enough for anyone who wants some, and they are out there making more as we speak. Here's a link with photos: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/37157/

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

What type of exposure do they need?

I planted some bulbine about a month ago and they have doubled! Do I just tug some of the side parts off? I did that and planted to see what would happen!!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Patricia, they look like a cross between Robert Kemp and Purpelea...both of which I have and trying to slowly get away from (although you never can completely get rid of a canna, can you!), because I like the larger flowers much better. They're really pretty though. Do they grow as tall as my two? 7-10 feet? Should tell Nivlac...he liked the Purpelea a lot, and Red Stripe would go well if it's a tall one too...!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Haha, patrob, you weren't the real drive-by canna criminal...I actually asked for and traded for yours. ^_^ I can't remember who I got the huge sack of them from. ~_~ I've actually been meaning to make a confession to you regarding having killed your cardamom almost immediately upon bringing it home. So sad! It smelled great, too.
The Red Stripes are gorgeous, and it hasn't been hard to find happy homes for the extras. I love the colors on them.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Ampy, I'm sorry you lost the cardamom, but I'm not the one who gave it to you! (I think ceejay was the one who brought the cardamom.) I think I did pot the cannas I gave you, but I could see myself dropping a bag of cannas on an innocent bystander. I believe I did do exactly that at the Kerrville RU last fall. :>))

Red Stripe does not have impressive flowers, though the hummers do like them. Mine are in full sun and grow to be about six to seven feet tall. If they had all the water they wanted, they might grow taller. The man who gave them to me said they reached ten feet in his garden up North. It might have been Wisconsin, but that trade was long ago.

I'm excited about getting starts of Meiyu's beautiful cannas. Robert is up and going, sometimes leaving his walker behind. We are planning to spend a few hours at his family reunion in New Braunfels on Saturday and then swing by Meiyu's late that afternoon before we head home.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm also excited about getting mine! Meiyu and Patrob...would you be able to come to Austin on Monday, July 3? I'm having lunch at my house, which is in Lakeway. (But first we're meeting at Red Barn when they open.) Would love to meet you two!!

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, Connie, for the invitation. I will see what I can do to be free on the 3rd. Right now Robert has physical therapy MWF mornings, but that schedule is probably flexible as small towns have some real advantages. I have left him alone for several hours a couple of times, and he is quite self-sufficient already. He'll be wanting to drive soon, and he scared me before the stroke! No fair repeating that, though I am sure he knows.
Patricia

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Patricia, we hope you can make it this time, since you almost did to the other one!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

I can't wait to meet you, patricia! I'm saving some cannas in a trash pail of water for you. Today lucifer and tangerine bloomed. I'll post them in a minute.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Connie...would I be able to bring Mama and the Hubby? I would love to come, but I can't really go anywhere without my mom, and when I take her out, I need Peter to help me with her (can't carry the hoyer lift, so he has to lift her for me).

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, that would be fine! The outside has many levels and steps, but the back is flat and the house is one level. I guess "Mama" could sit on the deck while we walk through the yard--or stay in the cool house!
We are meeting first at Red Barn off of 183 when it opens, but you might want to just meet at my house.
I'll D-mail you the directions. Do NOT speed coming thru Lakeway as we have 28 cops and they need lots of ticket money to support them!!! haha

We got GRASS today! Yea....I'm more happy than if an exotic flower had opened for the first time!! :) I haven't had a nice lawn in...oh...about 10 years! The yard was was cacti (wild ones), scrub oaks, overgrown cedars, brambles, and weeds when I moved here.

Connie...I'm not going to be able to do lunch and see your lovely garden. We'll be at the lake the weekend before the 4th, and will stay out there thru the 4th. The Big Kahuna has spoken! And I obey......uh huh.....
Hope you'll have a repeat tour soon! Looks great. Sorry I'll miss it, and seeing the "Horticult" again.
Sandi

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We will miss you, but I hadn't realized it was the day included in the July 4th weekend...maybe I should move the date? How about the NEXT Monday, which is July 10. Would that work for you (since you and I originally planned this little thang!!!)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I haven't stopped checking in now and then.

Hello everyone,

waiting patiently here for the next time I can join ya'll. I am trying to see if I can make on the 3rd Connie, but it will probably be a last minute decision if I can go. If you change the date keep me posted.

My DW is leaving in mid July for SRI Lanka mission trip w/ our church and returns in August. I will have lots of time on my hands third and fourth week in july so if anyone wants to get to gether let me know or give me dates and times.

I have been able to put alot of plants in their new homes and I am having to pay alot of attention to them so they can adjust to the new soil and location. It has been very hot and very uncomfortable for me and the plants. The yard is coming along better than I had planned. Although it will probably not be finished until late next year.

see ya'll later,
calvin

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Would the next Monday...the 10th...be better for most of you? I hadn't realized that the 3rd, a Monday, is part of the July 4th weekend!! Lots of people are going out of town, or want to stay IN and relax. Speak now or... :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I could do the 10th. Will there be anything left at Red Barn by then!!!?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I will have to decline the 10th, can do for the 12 th though, but don't change plans just for me if it works better for the group to plan on the 10th.

calvin

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Either the 3rd or the 10th is good for me.
Patricia

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Connie,
I am available the 10th too.

Michelle

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay...moving it to the 10th. Calvin...I do so hate to move it when you can't come but on the 11th I fly to Lubbock and will be there to help my daughter Brittany move to a larger apt.

I was in Edna, Texas, this weekend and stopped at three nurseries on the way home. One was in Schulenburg where I bought some Angelonias (15 of them, Sandi...haha) and then to 2 other nurseries on the way home, but didn't get anything at them except for a tomato, some okra, and some fresh peaches! :)....just made DH a cobbler...of course I won't eat a bite...yeah, sure!! :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I didn't get to go to Red Barn. DH kept me distracted thru the weekend. Think I'll head up there today. He's gone to the lake to mow. I stayed home to "clean house." Yeah, like that's gonna happen....
Connie, most landscapers advise to plant in "3s"....not "15s"

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I also plan to zip (yeah, sure!!) into Red Barn today after a lunch with some g'friends. I told Roger I'd go by to see if they would give me some money back bc I bought the mugo pines at 25% and they told me that was the July 4th sale!!! or...I would have waited!~!! Maybe I'll see y a there...probably loading your trunk. You sneaky gal.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I think I'm going to Red Barn myself today. As if I need more plants. Hopefully it's not too picked over.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

What did y'all get at RB? I am not going until tomorrow.

I have a question regarding how to adhere vines to a fence or tree. I planted the two moonvines that Calvin gave me. One I have planted against a tree b/c I'm hoping to train it to go up. The other is on the fence and I'd like to adhere it as it grows directly to the fence. I might even do that with the rangoon creeper since DH hasn't had time to made a trellis yet. what can I use to adhere them? I thought duct tape, but that would hurt the vines. staples?

Thanks for your help!
Michelle

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Michelle, would DH let you put small nails in your fence? You could put nails in the fence and then weave string in between the nails in the pattern that you like. It is a real cheap way to train a vine to climb a fence. You can use galvanized nails if you do not want them to rust and in the winter take the string down if you do not like the sight of them. Did I say it was cheap? lol.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh yes!! Merae, didn't you say that is what your mom did? I forgot about that!! Duh. I think Bryan would be okay with putting nails in and we have plenty of twine. Sorry, I completely forgot you told me about this already. Thanks!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh crumbs, Connie...the only reason I could go on the 3rd is because Peter could take the day off to either take care of mama or come with me so she could go. Well, I'm sure I can talk him into taking the following monday off instead. I'm thinking, though, I'd rather leave them both at home...heh...and drive the miata (not to mention having a taste of freedom for a few hours...oh, that sounds soooo good!).

Bigbubbles...the picture you lost...I fixed it for you.

Calvin, when are you picking up these plants?

Patricia, let me know if Robert is going to Connie's or not...Peter won't want to go unless he's going, I don't think...he really enjoyed his company and isn't really interested in hanging out with us (but of course, if he doesn't want to come, maybe I could convince him to watch mama...on his day off...hmmmmm...maybe not, huh?)

Well, here's your picture Bigbubbles...compliments of Picasa2 (free photo shop by Google and quite awesome!)

Thank you so much Meiyu, appreciate you taking the time to find the photo.
Sandi

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Meiyu, Robert and I really enjoyed seeing your garden and meeting Peter. Plus I came home with an amazing assortment of cannas and other great plants. I wish Robert could come to Austin with me on the 10th, but that is his regular physical therapy day and I have arranged for a friend to take him to his appointment. He'd prefer to spend time visiting with Peter!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Patricia, the cannas I gave you are nothing compared to the irises and hostas!! I'm so mad the heat made me air-headed and there were so many I forgot to give you!!

I guess I'll try to get Peter to watch mama for me so I can take my car (that he wrecked a couple of weeks ago when I let him drive it and it just got fixed today, so I could make him feel guilty, maybe? hehe.)

Remember that plant that had the big flower bud? Here's the flower. It's blooming again today...hope buring the flower stem really grows new babies!

I'm looking forward to our little "thing" on the 10th!~ So glad Pat and Meiyu can make it!
I'm sure Red Barn will still have lots of stuff..., but I really got a lot of bargains yesterday!
I got some incredible bargains, including esperanze, furcraea, flase agave, chameleon, barberry, elephant ears (the exotic luminous purple-in-the-center ones!) coral bells, fig tree, purple mondo grass, variagated fig ivey, rosemary, sweet flag, gazanias, huchera (sp) asian jasmine (varigated, again!), creeping charlie, duranta (2 types) and some chartreuse agapanthus! I called my brother, who just bought a house, and he joined me and we bought the same $ amount of plants within 10 cents...it was funny and fun! (I actually got more, because I had a $50. credit! They were so nice. I bought some Mugo pines the day before the sale, and after I called corporate (they told me there was NOT going to be a weekend sale!) and explained about our trip on Monday the 10th, they were just falling all over themselves to say they were sorry and my refund would be ready immediately! They really are nice.

My brother bought a "Texas Hibiscus" that has a red, 5-petal bloom (I think!) that is fabulous. His was about 5 feet tall....with many blooms...got it for 15.00, reg. 30.00. EVERYTHING "that has roots" is 1/2 off!!!

Does anyone know if Marbridge is still open/ still has any plants?

If I could just get a "head count" for the lunch by...say, next Friday....I can have the right amount of food. I LOVE to cook for guests, so don't anyone try to bring anything but your sweet selves.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Count me in on your head count, please.
Leaving in the early morning for plant run to Rosenberg...Caldwell Nursery... with friends. Will be gone all day. Disappointed that we couldn't coordinate it with the 'Jerry's Jungle' sale Friday. Maybe another time....
I had decided not to go because daughter and grandson are here all week, but DH prodded me to go ahead and go with 'em! Can't argue with that. Got my credit cards, cash, and plastic bags....so I don't muddy up friend's vehicle.....sooooooo considerate. Do you think Bruce has an ulterior motive?????
Gee...sounds like you didn't leave anything at RB, Connie! Glad I didn't waste gas driving up there. I still have stuff on patio to plant.
Our neighbors have invited us to take trip to Peru this fall. Her family lives there. I'll have to drug Bruce and stuff him into a steamer trunk....but I'm gonna try.....he doesn't like to travel. Sigh...

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

YEA, Sandi. Glad you can now make it! Didn't want to do it without you, since you and I are the ones who were originally going to do the RB and lunch thing!!

Where is Jerry's Jungle...in Rosenburg also?

Wow....Bruce wanted you to go? Well, it's because he KNOWS how much enjoyment you get from buying and planting, and how much we Love viewing your gardens!!! He's proud of you and wants to support your ....okay....I'll say it...habit! haha (gotcha back....!!:)

There is plenty left at RB. but I wonder if they later do a 75% off? Historically, do any of the nurseries here do that to get rid of mostly everything in our H...O...T...August??

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

HYPERLINK@jerrysjungle.com]
Found this on the Tropical Forum. Really would have liked to have gone Friday, but we couldn't coordinate with group. Will be content to look for gingers, etc. Should be fun trip. Leaving really early in the morning! I'm taking my botanical book!!!
I think some things will get reduced to 75%, but you'll have to baby it over the winter.....Just depends on if you want to enjoy it now or next year.....

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Sandi...just re-read...PERU???? Wow...what an opportunity. And to be able to stay with some of the locals is just wonderful!

I did that with Florence, Italy, yearrrrs ago. My ex's cousin lived there (studying art in Florence...can you imagine??) and we really got to learn the true Florence...not just the tourist's usual. Bonne' (his cousin) also drove us to Pisa one day, and those were the days when you could walk to the TOP of the leaning tower...right where over 20 people just kept spiraling around (probably drunk!) and fell to their deaths! Now, you can't go up like that, or so I've heard.

I've had a life-long dream to see Machu Pichu (sp?)...isn't it in Peru?

And thinking circuitously, ever heard of Madeline Peru??? Great singer, if you love jazz. :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

You guys(opps...Gals) are very busy, busy, busy....... Just got back last night from Arlington, celebrating 12th ANN. It was fun.

Meiyu-- call me.. I will come and pick up what ever you have. and Connie, I am still trying to finnd the time to bring the goods to you hold on a little longer.

calvin

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Calvin...I'm so sorry you will not be able to make it on the 10th! If anything changes in your schedule, we will look forward to seeing you!

And don't make a special trip here to bring the cannas...I will be able to get some others at a later date, I know. Go ahead and plant all of them. We will probably do another NT in the fall, and by that time, it would be too late for the poor things...in a little-bitty pot....:( haha

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Connie, if they're cannas that I gave him for you, no worries...I have more, and am coming on the 10th. Peter is just deciding whether to let me go alone or help me to bring Mama with...I think it will be easiest for him to just stay home and watch her for me (that way, he can finish his yard work honey-do's too...heh.)

Oh, Calvin! I DID call you Saturday and told you to come any morning you can! Some of my friends and neighbors came by and took some of the stuff sitting on the front patio because it was getting so crowded that they couldn't come in the door. There's still a bunch of ice plant, unknown cannas (they were in places that were too shaded or dry to grow, so they never bloomed and I don't know what ones they are, other than they were tall ones, because those are the ones I put along the fence line last year...Robert Kemps, Richard Wallaces, Cleopatras, and I don't remember what else. I planted almost all the irises cuz I didn't want them sitting out there, but there are still a couple I didn't get to yet, so if you're coming soon, I will hold on to them since they are among the duplicates from Patrob that I'd planned to share with you anyway! I have a bunch of baby china berry trees and Hibiscus Cannibinus, if you want any of them. I have a cutting of a pink and white brugmansia you can take, too...I don't remember which one it is, just what it looks like. You can come any morning M-F that you'd like...the only time I won't be outside between 7-10am is when it rains, but I will be home cuz I can't leave!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, meiyu!

Just one thing that I don't know if Calvin told you...I am only planting orange and purple bloomers for about the next 5 years...if I get tired of the color scheme! And really I'm interested in the unusual foliage color...I've been trying to find the striped ones...

See ya on the 10th! Are you going to Red Barn first?

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, then, do you have Tropicanna and Pretoria (Bengal Tiger)? And would you like Canna Tangelo? Hibiscus Cannibinus is a plum-purple, and blue columbine is a blue-purple. Would you like one of either of those? Let me think what else I can bring you. If you need to see the pictures, I can post them here today.
