Nursery Tour in Austin

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I guesss things are dying down a bit, or everyone is really busy.

I had some seeds sprout, moonflower vines( Iopmoea turbinata(lavender moonvine) and Impomoea alba). not all have sprouted but all conditions the same I expect 100% germination and sprouts by tour time, when ever that is. If someone is interested dmail me and let me know and I will bring them with me.
I wll be keeping a few and only a few so what I don' use will either go to a nursery for consignment (if I can find a nursey to do that) or in the trash.
Also, my Empress Trees have put on four leaves, I would like to share with anyone.

Okay...we need to set a date. Everyone who is interested...post ONE DATE and we can tally the votes and that will be it. I vote for

JUNE 8, a Thursday

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

June 8 -- it might be cooler than later!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm lurking...I love 'road' trips...

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

The 8th is fine with me, but I can also go any of the other three dates.
Thought I'd pass along... the Spring Flower and Vegetable Show & Sale is June 3&4 at Zilker. It's free.
And June 10th is a Staghorn Fern Symposium with Roy Vail at Zilker. $35 includes lunch, mounted fern, and seminar by the world's expert staghorn grower.
I've just spread a half yard of ground/tumbled glass on my pathway. Looks great when it's wet...sparkles. Hope it doesn't rain before it gets a chance to settle. This is second application in about four years. The torrential rains buried some....time to refresh anyway.

the 8th for my vote

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

bubbles--can you do a pic of that glass?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Connie, the 8th is perfect for me as well.

Here's the tumbled glass mulch...can send other pics of path if you can't see it well enough

I am scrambling inside my head with ideas of how to use the tumble glass. Great idea.

I will have to get some.
I thought that I had seen a section in the club that gave us a wish list. But I can not find it. Does any one know?

dmj...you have almost 20 days to plan...just do it! :) I go to Houston a lot in the summer...it just takes about 3 hours for me.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I must drive a bit faster...8th is out for me.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I would love to come on the 8th,,let's do it :) Margie

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Aw, Margie, I wish I could come and visit with you! We missed you at the RoundUp. The rest of you are so lucky!
:-(

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

It seems that we have 6 -10 people coming on

*****************************************************************
JUNE 8, a Thursday, for our "during the week" Nursery Tour.
*****************************************************************
Yea...we have a DATE!!! (I think there is enough interest for a weekend tour also, but I can rarely do weekends, so someone else can start a thread and organize one. And if I'm lucky, it will be on one of those rare weekends when my DH doesn't come home and I can attend and meet more of you!!

Now...someone can do the schedule...not me. Just read the above postings and see what most people want...and decide. I really don't care. I visit them all and can happily go again to any!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Great,

I have only one request and that is to provide me with the rondevue point. My wife is/was an Austinite so she knows/remembers a little about how to get around. Times too.

I hope no one minds me bringing my family. we will drive our vehicle and follow who ever? I would like it if my wife and kids took an interest in my gaardening, so we have someting to share together. tagging along with me and meeting ya'll shows them how others get excited like myself.

calvin

p.s.-- I'm not trying to force them to enjoy my hobbies but at least participate once in awhile... :)

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know if I can make it or not. I am having some unexpected extensive dental work done early that week. If it gets rescheduled maybe I can make it. Ya'll have as much fun as a group of dirt lovers can have!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

loudigger,

You are going too? If your plans do not change maybe we can meet somewhere in SA and wagon train it to Austin. If other SA DGer's are going have them join the wagon train. that way no one, mainly me, gets lost.

Has planning finished on the tour? Last I see is a day, has times and meeting locations been set yet? I feel so out of the loop. Enjoying the scenery in the forums and all, I lost track of all the info going on in here. I'm still interested in the tour and eeting who ever is going if the tour is still going to happen. I have never visited any of the above nurseries in Austin.

calvin

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Calvin,

No one has done the plan yet. I had suggested one a long time ago and it didn't work for anyone. So...I'm waiting for someone to do Plan B! I'll just be excited to meet everyone.

Connie

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Florabunda nursery

Is this one still in the race?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'd love to go there as it's one of the few in Austin haven't been to!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I think I can do June 8th; but I need to stay some where close by the "run " on the 7th becuase I need to be back early on the 9th. Any interesting motels, hotels, garden villas with Brad Pitt to carry luggage close by? lol

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hmmm I'll have to research that tomorrow for you...but I know there are plenty of reasonable ones right by the airport, and if you come in on 71, you will pass by about 5. If you come in from 290, I don't know...I never go that way.

Aren't you the science teacher? If so, where do you teach in Houston? I used to be at Spring Branch (about 25 years ago!) I teach English...9th...just finished today!!

Connie

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm thinking west side of Austin, prettier huh? Let me google Marble Falls..may as well make this really fun. Let me 'google' and get some links--maybe ya'll can enlighten me if they are really as nice as they look in the 'tourist advertising'. I need a project tonight.

yes--west region of HISD.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Anyone know how far a drive from Austin this is? I'm thinking maybe an hour...been awhile since I've been up that way.

Deb

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes....or less. It's about 20 minutes from me here in Lakeway. I've only been to Marble Falls once, and it was a long time ago. Sorry I'm not more help.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

djm...you have D-mail

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Then it looks like Inks Lake it is...

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay guys...assuming you are all "watching" this thread, as I am... Someone--anyone...please???--needs to suggest which nurseries we visit, and which one before lunch. I think most people liked one N. planned for before lunch and one after, with a third planned just for those who have more time. We just want plenty of time at each nursery and plenty of time at lunch to get to know one another!!

We could meet at Westlake High School...which is very close to Bigbubbles' house. (She said some could park there.) I teach at WHS and I know that things are being held there all summer and cars are parked there constantly. It's very safe. If people then want to carpool, they can. Or, as Nivlac said, we can "wagon train" to the locations so we have our cars to put the plants into.

Nurseries VERY close to WHS (which is on Loop 360, convenient to all)
1. Barton Springs Nursery
2. Pots and Plants

Here's another idea I just thought of:

We could meet at The Great Outdoors first. Then have lunch THERE (the cafe is in the nursery, but I've never eaten there, so I have no idea about the food. I'll try to go there this week and check it out. )Those coming from out of Austin could just meet there. It's on South Congress...just off of Ben White/HWY 71...which is off of I-35.

Then we could go to another nursery:

Marbridge is HUGE and cheap, but a ways out...maybe 15 minutes from Great O.
The Natural Gardener: large, informed staff, fun area for kids...swings! (Nivlac...listening? :)
Pots and Plants and/or Barton Springs N.: almost "next door" to one another and about 10 minutes from Gr O.

Anyone want to add to this...suggest an alternative...be my guest. As I've said many times before, I love them all for different reasons, so I'll be happy just meeting people!

Connie

Then we could

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm all for it. I vote yes to connie's plan. Just need times.?

calvin

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I just realized that 'nivlac' is Calvin backwards...cool! I'll call Great Outdoors in the morning and see what their times are.

Connie

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Ya"ll know that if it works out this time, we can plan another tour in say in the fall once the july and august heat subside. I am always interested in seeing how plant stock(inventory) and supplies change with the seasons. Plus, if we all or some of us have plants to bring and share or swop, it is a great chance to remodel our personla gardens.

I have been interested in concrete art. I don't remember the exact name of sculpting with concrete. Thought that I would do some yard art and leaf shaped bird baths with it. Maybe someone knows how and we set up a date to meet some where, say in a park or parking lot of a nursery and do this (in my case learn how). Great opportunity for public awareness and for those who might be seeking a master gardener status, volunteer hours.

If someone knows how to do this concrete art(sculpting) let everyone know. I'm inerested.

calvin

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Just a Question as it pours down rain here--
Which of these nurseries is on the west, sw, and nw sides of Austin?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Calvin,

I've also been interested in concrete...but I want to make some HUGE modern planters....just straight sided boxes

I'm potting up lots of things as I trim...like verbena (purple), coleus, etc. I haven't gardened in about 10 years, so I"m new to it all. I don't really know how to do it. I did dip the cutting in a root stimulant and planted in a very good draining soil. I'm also saving all the little flats and pots that fit inside and will be planting some seeds just to practice for next spring...and if they live and grow...yea!

dmj...Pots and Plants and Barton S are in the SW "Westlake" area...West I guess...
SW would be Marbridge (or South...I'm really n ot good with directions! I just follow roads! :)
NW is Red Barn

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Connie, your plan sounds good. Meeting at Westlake HS and going from there sounds great, or at the Great O. I'm pretty easy going and am happy to go along with the flow!

Not sure if we will have time for Red Barn, but shoot, if we do, it would be great to do it last since it is up my way. But please do not re-arrange anything just for me. I can do whatever. It all sounds delightful.

Michelle

Dallas, TX

One question Bigbubbles, how do you work that tumble glass? If you want to replant something, isnt there a chance you can get glass in your hands? I think its really beautiful and I have never seen anything like it, but I worry about rubbing my eyes when I start sweating.

Sylvia

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Connie, what time are you thinking we will arrive at the first nursery? The Great Outdoors is a great choice. I'm planning to join the group at the first stop. The restaurant at The Great Outdoors sounds interesting for lunch!

Afterwards how about Pots and Plants and/or Barton Springs Nursery (I have never been to either) and those who want to end up at The Natural Gardener? (Ulterior motive -- it's on my highway out of town! lol) Of course, if Howard Nursery is having a really good sale, we might want to work it in. :>))

Don't you feel like you are herding cats at times!!

We're just a little over a week away!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay...I just talked to Merredeth who usually helps me at The Great Outdoors and he will be in NYC on June 8, but he said the owner of the nursery or someone very knowledgable will be "at our beck and call" while we're there. He said the cafe has sandwiches, if that will be okay for eating. OR...Guerro's Mexican is a bit down South Congress, and those of us on the Low Carb diets can easily have the fajitas, OR there is always Opal Divines close by, a rest. that serves typical Austin / American /some health-conscious food. They have a huge outdoor area...or indoors is nice too.

The Plan...thus far...

Meet at Great Outdoors at 9:00, when they open. Here is the link for phone, address, etc.

www.GOnursery.com

1. Spend as much time as we want at The Great Outdoors

2. then have lunch there at the cafe (OR go to a close place...either Guerro's for
Mexican or Opal Divines for American)

3. Then drive to the 2 nurseries that are close to one another:
Pots and Plants (called the "Pink Flamingo" place by some~! ) &
Barton Springs Nursery.

4. It ends there for most....if others are still wanting to continue, as you have
suggested, we can point you in the direction of home and tell you what nurseries
are nearby.

Edited to remove my cell number! Once again...I forget that this site is accessible to the world! :)
