Wisteria 1 Bloom?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

This is my wisteria in 2004, it bloomed the year after it split in a storm and I patched it with a clamp and duct tape. Since then in 2005 it got about 3 blooms on it and this year it is healthier than ever but only one bloom? My local gardener says I should trim it in July, not in the fall. I try to keep up with it when I can as it grows into the surrounding trees and gets runners miles long. I know they blossom from last years' growth and I don't trim it back that much, any ideas on why so few blooms?
Thanks
Cande

Candee (who spelled her own name wrong! LOL), I remember when that split and we convinced you to tape it back together! I've heard that both root pruning and burying bananas and banana peels around it are supposed to help. I imagine just about anything would help but not too much nitrogen. Have you tried any of the messenger or mighty plant? Another thought might be some super thrive. I think it's just going to take a while for the plant to heal completely.

Well, I did officially change the spelling of my name LOL!!!!!!!!!!
But it bloomed beautifully after the taping, do you think it is in shock since that one bloom season? Never heard of messenger or mighty plant? Miracle gro? Had one suggestion of bone meal?

Do you need to trim it back at all? They grow wild in the trees around here and bloom beautifully. I doubt anyone trims them. It's crazy sometimes when something that grows wild is so tempermental under better conditions. lol

Use triple phosphate is a recommendation (worked for my mother on one that hadn't bloomed in years). Root pruning if all else fails. Don't prune too late in the year (not sure when that is) else you will be discouraging blooms for next year. I know hydrangeas and azaleas you prune right after it blooms else you would be pruning out the next year's blooms.

Yep, I do need to prune some as it gets into pines and dogwoods. Will try the phosphate, when do you do that? I was told I may be pruning too late in the fall and that is why no blooms.
Thanks for all the ideas,
Candee
