THANK YOU, DAVE'S GARDEN!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't know about most of you, but I'm just ecstatic about finding this web site! Because I live alone except for when DH comes in on weekends, it's become my new person to "talk to" when I come home from work. It also is the best thing since the invention of the radio for making housework more palatable!!!

I load clothes in the washer and dryer... run over to DG to check the latest posts;
make a bed... check again;
go outside and work up a sweat weeding...come in and research questions that popped up while outside.

THANKS SO MUCH to all who read, then take the time to answer. YOU MAKE MY LIFE MORE FUN, and I'm thankful for that!!

Oh Connie!!!!

Congrats on finding the site. I didn't find it (even lived near Dave I guess in Bryan/College Station at one point) and still didn't find it til getting my new place here and buying up all the flowers I thought were "pretty" and putting them in. Realized my mistake as it matured into a horror story and had to do plant research online. Found Dave's! It's saved me more than the cost in it's subscription since then because I won't buy any plants I don't look up here first. I love when members put in comments about plants.

And I'm like you...people will think I LIVE on the internet....I leave and do something and then I run back to "check." LOL. Peas in a pod, that's what we are here. =)

Connie,
I too, just discovered Dave's..and it has been such a help. All I know of gardening is what I learned from my grandma growing up, and sadly, she's been gone for many years. I have retained an interest, and now that I am out on my own it is so nice to have this resource and the wonderful ppl here who are so helpful. BTW, I do the check between chores thing..lol
Glad I am not the only junkie here=)
THANKS TO ALL!!!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Alamo...definitely! I can't wait for a Round Up OR nursery crawl in Austin OR San Antonio so that we can meet and discover new places to buy plants! PS....Peas in a pod...good metaphor for gardeners who think alike!~! :) I'm just glad my DH has looked at the screen as he walks by (my puter is in the kitchen) so he knows I'm not trolling for men on the internet because I'm so fixated on it!! :)

Artemis, I also got my love of gardening (and people say my "Green Thumb" from MY grandmother! Gardening is my way remembering her. She did not have a sprinkler system and had to hand water a HUGE garden each evening. She would allow me to water some areas and I thought it was so cool.

Hey folks, I am a year plus veteran of Daves, and believe me, you will not meet nicer folks than those who hang out here.

I am a grandmother of a 10 year old, and she is showing interest in my gardening. I hope that some day, she can say with pride, "I got my interest in gardening from my grandmother". No higher compliment could be paid me.

Welcome, and enjoy your gardens this year, and for years to come.

Hi, I have been here almost as long as defoecat (I looked up every ones start date). I have gotten so much info and fun from this site. I am one of those "keep the computer on people" that stops by now and again and it probably looks like I live here too. I work from my home so the computer is my daytime companion along with two cats that is.

Howdy and welcome aboard Connie.
I've only been on for about a month - but this site is VERY addictive. So many topics and the thousands of threads to follow and read. And the pictures the members post - can hardly wait for my digital camera - should be here by mid month.
Sorry you missed the RU in College Station. Great group!

Dave, TX is too big for just one - we need another.

I second that Bubba!!!!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

connie welcome to the site
I have been here since the beginning as it use to be a place just to make a trade list and maintain your trades and slowly forum by forum we started to grow. I remember how we traded seeds with such fury and that called for a mail forum so we could share with the others here what we recieved that day in the mail! Dave was crowned-dah man back then and has held that title ever since-the site has grown by leaps and PEOPLES! Im we are glad that you are one of us ....

This site has my heart and always will!
welcome to the best garden site ever!!!!
Im dori-NOTmartha ;)

Dori (NOT Martha...how clever a name!)

Thanks for the "origins" info for the site!! I have wondered how it all came about. Perhaps you could write a "bio" for the site and Dave would post it. I'm sure people who join now would be curious as I was about how this all came to be! What year did it start? AND, has the site ever considered a "National Convention" to just meet and greet/ see plant vendors, etc? If one were to be held --say in Dallas or Atlanta, which are airline hubs-- we could have such a great time!! If one were to be held every two years in different places, there should be sufficient time for people to save their airline miles / money for the trip! Dave seems like a good organizer, so contacting a hotel, etc. should be right up his alley! I'm sure plant/gardening companies would LOVE to have displays! Just a thought...

Not to pooh-pooh any ideas, but could you imagine a convention without a plant swap and seed swap? Can you imagine how hard it would be to transport all those plants, not to mention trying to navigate all the airport rules and regulations.

"I'm sorry, Mam. We're going to have to search your bag."

"What are these seeds, Mam? Are they for your own personal consumption?

"Officer, I think this woman is smuggling drugs. Ipomoea, I believe. What's that, mam? You plan on using these to grow vines? That would be with intent to distribute, Officer."

"Geez, Louie, this is the fifth old lady we've bagged this morning."

Beaker,

I see what you mean...:) OH well, it was VERY late last night when I came up with that not-so-bright idea...so I'll just chalk it up to the "bewitching hour."

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is a link to the official "How it all began" thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/367599/#new It is fun to read. :-)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

LOL breaker, I can see it!

I'm sure Dave and Trish with their young ones and farm are as busy as can be. I bet Dave wouldn't hesitate if other members wanted to have "national conventions" in their areas. There are so many great DGers from all over Dave would never get to sleep if he was having RU's all over!!! He used to have one in Kerrville TX where he used to live (and an hour from me) but I see his point when he mentioned about having in College Station that they'd hold it there from now on if they had a good enough turnout. From the great pics looks like they did! Someone even mentioned flying in from AZ from it! I wonder how far everyone has traveled for them?!

Marylyn,

Thanks for that thread. I have been wondering about it since I found DG!

West Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Thanks for the link to the story behind DG. It's wonderful, and I'm so glad that it's here!

Marylyn,
Thanks for the hyperlink to Dave's story of how it all began!

Marylyn-I enjoyed reading the story behind the site.

There are Round Ups going on all over the country already. Roadrunner started them with one in Tennessee several years ago. Look at this forum to see if there is one coming soon to a town near you: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/roundup/all/

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Marylyn,

I know about the Round Ups...I was thinking of a US-wide meeting so we could meet others we talk to on DG, for starters. I also envisioned an "exchange of information" between vendors and gardeners...somewhat like our local "Garden Shows." I really didn't consider taking little potted things on the airplane, but I did enjoy Beaker's scenario of the problems just such a thing could cause! :) But thanks for the info anyhoo...

Hi, All,

Welcome to everyone who has discovered Daves! I was thrilled when I discovered this site. If you have questions, are feeling intimidated about gardening, or just want to share your experiences, Dave's can't be beat.

I always love reading the posts from folks who are new to the site. It is so exciting to find folks who share our interests and can answer our questions. This site has such a diverse membership and audience. I joined in 2002 and have never looked back. Thanks to the trades, Co-Ops, great advice and enthusiasm of others, my gardens have flourished. We are very blessed to have this community of people who care and share.

I was one of the early converts thanks to JustMeLisa. GW was becoming a bit like a prison camp in some ways. You could be sent to the Disney website for so many infractions of rules no one seemed to even know about that one never knew what to expect next. Even communicating with someone who had been punished or banned could get you in trouble with the powers that be.

I'm so thankful to Dave and his supporters for this site. I would be lost without it.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

What is GW? Sounds terrible--not fun like DG!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

There's that GW popping up again...Since people call me GW for short, I always do a double-take when I see that acronym! I'm a long-timer here, too, though not as long-time as Dori. Welcome to what's become an endless source of friends for my husband Howie and me. Check this out, for instance: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/562832/ I can't tell you enough good things about the people here. We are so fortunate to count these people as friends. You've found a good place, Connie. :)
