My wife and I were having a discussion about repotting our greenhouse plants in the next couple of weeks and putting them out in our yard for the summer. She mentioned that, for the health of the plants, we probably should apply the 2/3, 1/3 rule for potted plants when we repot them. Being the intelligent gardener that I am, I said, "Huh?" She then explained that there is a generally accepted practice (guideline, rule, whatever) that the height of the pot of a potted plant should be should be about half the height of the plant. As an example: if the above ground height of a plant is 2 ft., then the proper height of the pot in which it is planted shoud be about 1 ft. The repotted plant is 3 ft. tall; the pot is 1/3 of that height and the plant is 2/3. I had never heard of this practice. Has anybody else heard of it? Is it valid? Or is she just having some fun playing mind-games with me, ha.
The 2/3 1/3 guideline rule for potted plants?
Sounds logical & about right.
Bernie
You can pot them however they please you but, for a sense of balance, you are supposed to use that general rule. I guess you could also consider whether you are trying to draw attention to the pot or the plant. A plant twice the size of the pot does look best.
Chele, especially if your gonna buy it right!!!LOL
Hey now, if I am buying, I like the root ball busting out of the pot and sending up pups. THAT is the perfect size for buying! LOL
LOL!
Don't you know it!!!!
