Water from fish tank?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I'm not really sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes:

We are cleaning our fish tank today (it's been almost a year since we have cleaned it. YIKES!) and I am wondering if it is ok to dump the water in my flowerbeds? I know there are products out there that include fish in them, but what about the tank water?

Thanks for any info you can provide! :o)

Sure mgh, lots of nutrients in it after a year! LOL

Edited to add: As long as it isn't a saltwater tank!

i routinely dump my tank water on plants. The poop is good, but the ammonia concentration could be too high after this long. I would dilute it a lot.

I dump the water from my freshwater tank on plants all the time. I also drain out several decorative ponds every spring and dump that water on plants too.

Not that you are growing any carnivorous plants but... most plants seem to love fish water other than carnivorous plants. Water a carnivorous plant with fish water and it will probably shock and die from nutrient overload.

Thank you everyone! We went ahead and took a chance and poured it in 2 of my flowerbeds. I was worried about the ammonia level in it, but I figured if the fish were still alive it couldn't be that high. ;o) We get so much rain around here it will probably be diluted and washed away in the next day or two anyway.

Oh, and yes, it is a freshwater tank. :o)

When I had my freshwater tank that is what I did with the water from water changes...the plants loved it..

Hi mgh,
When I had several tanks, I had a weekly routine of cleaning them during an old Star Trek (didn't really have to watch, just company) and put all the water in my house plants. They thrived! Miss my tanks. Laura

That's a good idea, Laura. Next time my DH cleans the tank I'll put some in my houseplants. Hopefully we won't wait a year next time. It's a 46 gallon tank, so it's a pretty big job to clean it.
