Nivlac, beautiful garden, It will fill in fast. My fern and hosta are doing wonderfully and this is the 2nd and 3rd year for them. I am adding some ostrich fern and a few other shade lovers to mine but running out of room. I love the pots. what a great idea. I may have to try it.
Isn't gardening great? Marie

I would enjoy a Fern Forum, probably most in the PNW would.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

The fern mine is beginning to come alive, a profusion of fronds, mosses and lichens, indigenous plants. My mother planted this, and is the fount of all knowledge, so I will consult her before I start identifying them...

Andy,
Wow! I love it, Sounds like your mom was quite the lady, she sure had the right touch with fern, moss....
Is that an old foundation to a house?
Can you get any close up pics of the moss & lichens?
Did I mention....WOW!

Here's the Interrupted Fern, Osmunda Claytoniana. I should have tried for a better angle. My mother developed the fern mine over several years in the late 1970s. She's still around, turning 80 in September, and still keen on all of this!

Can I share my Interrupted Fern? Here it is emerging this Spring. I dug this up in the woods several years ago.

And here is one of my Sensitive Ferns as it emerged. This one I actually paid money for several years ago, and now I've found lots of them in my woods. I don't recommend it unless you can confine it. It has runners that really take off. These are new fronds this year and look like they are trying to escape under the deck. The mother plant is not nearly as large as her offspring. Does anyone have any ideas on why this has happened.

People over in the Hosta Forum have been discussing Ferns.

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/604681/

Ferns are such great companion plants for Hostas. So.....how much longer do we need to be patient before we can have a Ferns Forum?

Please, please, please.....Dave are you out there?

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I will put my vote in for a Ferns Forum too.

I got a bunch of unknown (to me) varieties this year. I will get some pictures soon. Along with my hosta, heuchera, tiarella, heucherella, brunnera, canna, iris, daylily, hen & chicks, clematis, morning glory and who knows what else 'collections' LOL I would love to hear about ferns too.

Here is another wonderful nursery that I have bought froim in the past. He's a DG subscriber and has a 100% good rateing. Drew is very good about not selling me ferns that won't grow in my zone, always suggests a substitute......and he's right!

Don't forget to nag Dave about getting a Fern Forum.

Marie...

I don't know what kind of fern I got there. It is very upright. I will have to take some pics. Still haven't gotten the lesson on getting it from the camera back to the computer...soon...

The ferns faired better than the hostas, brugs and tomatos in the hail storm.

I am hoping to be in your area in July. I will let you know if I get up that way.

Hail storms are just dreadful. Hopefully you will still get some new leaves coming up on your hostas. Our storm season is just about to start. I try to keep it in perspective and hope that the house gets through without damage. The plants are the easiest to replace. I just keep telling myself.....it's just a plant.....it's just a plant.

I think it's time for everyone to tell their friends on other forums that we're trying to get a Fern Forum started and ask them to post on this thread, but ONLY if they would participate.

I love ferns and I have a nice fern story.......I found this fern across the road from my home one early morning about ten years ago........It evidently had fallen off a truck....probably a garbage truck considering its condition......but ever the Maw Maw that I am I picked it up and took it to the hose gave it some water and fertilizer and let it join the other plants ...soon I was rewarded with a beautiful plant....I have shared it with friends and had it in the yard until Katrina debri clean up and a new sewerage system destroyed the babies....... here is a pic of it from last summer It looks about the same now.....shirleyt

Great Fern and great fern story. I'm so sorry that you lost so much of it to Katrina. It is determined however to be with you.....and survived once again.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

A beautiful Fern and a great story. Ferns are strange, the ones that don't work just don't work and the others are indestructible.

Chesterland, OH(Zone 5b)

Glad to here you both made it through!
what program did you use to make the blue frame?

Well, I'm just now jumping on this bandwagon and there are already 114 ahead of me. Exactly how many have to ask before we can get an official forum?
