Timing the garden

Sanford, FL(Zone 9b)

Has anyone out there tried to "time" their garden for a specific event? I am giving a wedding shower June 10th and would love the garden to be in prolific bloom right then! Would maybe Miracle Grow or some other fertilizer 1-2 weeks before do it? Dead-head one week before? Any ideas welcome!

More than anything, timing depends on the time of year (long days-short nights). June is a good month for blooms, because June 21st is the longest daylight of the year.

I think more than anything it would depend on the types of plants. I do timing so to speak. I have sections in my front and back gardens designed to integrate seasonal plants I grow in pots that integrate into the garden with out putting them in the ground. Most of the time you cannot even tell they are in pots. For example I have several pots of impasiens sitting in the waiting/growing area, around feb and march they start blooming and I bring the impasiens into the sections of the garden I swap out. Right now I have caladiums, and other heat loving plants gearing up in the waiting area. About May, the impasiens will start getting scrawny, at which time they cycle back to the waiting area to recuperate and the caladiums, and other heat loving plants are brought into the garden all ready to go. I think we are in similar zones if not the same, so I would count on something that you remember from last year that thrives well during june. If it is like here..it would be something that likes or is tolerant of alot of heat. Hibiscus, plumerias, day lilies, jasmines, vines and climbers, salvias, crinums, durantas are examples of plants to count on in june. Many things that are in full splendor in the north in june, are in full splendor in our zones Jan/Feb. Since you have some good time left to plan, I would consult with a local nursery,
You may even try www.topstropicals.com in florida. They are a great bunch there and very helpful. Good luck!!!!

this was from last year...the impasiens and calladiums were in small pots. I have a green house so I had the calladiums already fully grown fairly early.
