The yard was actually moving.....

Last night was so beautiful that my son talked me into a walk. Or it started out that way. My DF had been trying to get my kids to come up to his house on a rainey night and catch Night Crawlers to sell this summer to neighbors for fishing. My kids were NOT interested. Last night changed Zeth's mind. The yard was "alive" with the wriggly things!! I picked up one that was no kidding 11 in long!! A mini snake in my opinion;) Dad was complaining that his yard looked like it had been taken over by moles but the runs were smaller. This morning I walked back up there and sure enough his yard looked like a mini vision of the ground in "Tremors"!! I bet we caught over 100 worms in about 30 min. Even I had fun!! Talk about how you spent your family night!!!LOL

ROFLOL!!! That's hilarious! Where do you sell your worms? Thanks for posting!

Beats me!!! This is all something my Dad concocted. Evidently people just show up and buy them. Go figure

Bet I know where I'll be next time it rains!!

Cool.. post the pictures! I would love to see it LOL... This large land I don't know if I will be able to see some crawls. In the morning, I see some dirts being run by mole???? but it's smaller.. It must be some insects digging under dirts...

Could be worms Mini

Was it during a night of thunderstorms that they came out?

crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Yes it was this time. But they come out during any real good rain. We have now started a worm bed to use the castings for fertilizer.

Tina, I have that fun too. I put any I catch into flower beds unless I'm planning to go fishing! If fishing is on the schedule, I put some in a bucket of peat and boy, do the fish love 'em when they are offered on a hook!!

I read that the low pressures cause gasses to escape the soils and that draws up the worms. Then the soil is happy.

Don't know anything about that but it sure is fun;)

If you get your weedeater out and jogg it against the ground when the soil is moist you can accomplish the same thing.

The vibration apparently drives the worms nuts and they come to the surface in a hurry.

I once dug out the soil for a basement window. I was down about 7 feet. The night crawlers were at all depths. When the ground freezes, they just keep going until they are below the frost line. Here it can freeze down 4 to 6 feet in a good winter.
I have seen night crawler holes in mornings even in dry spells. It must have to do with low pressure as some one mentioned.
If you look closely at the crawlers out of their holes, you will see some that are laying close together, they are mating.
Interesting fact; earthworms are the most numerous land creature in the world!
