DIY lawn sprinkler system? Have you done it?

We BADLY need a sprinkler system, I've known people who have done it themselves. Is it really do-able? Easy? I know we can rent a machine which digs the little "ditches" for the pipes to go in, and I would presume a plumber would have to be hired to do the actual tapping into the water line?

I would love to hear from people who have done this and if you can recommend any particular system of sprinklers that would be greatly appreciated as well!

Hope someone knowledgeable answers - I'm interested in doing the same thing.

I've designed and installed two. It's a snap! There are great DIY instructions on several web sites, just google. I'm a senior with some disabilities and if I can do it anyone ought to be able to! LOL The one indispensible tool I discovered part way through the first one is a heavy hand pick. Goes right through sod, tuck the hose in the trench and put the sod back. This saved me hours and a sore back. Another trick I discovered if you have low water pressure is lay all the 1/2" hoses in circles/loops. That keeps the water pressure even... may use a bit more hose but avoids the water pressure weakening to a dribble at the end of the line.

When you say "hose" is this a special sprinkler hose? I was thinking PVC piping was the way to go. Good tip for the water pressure though, I can imagine that tip would help!

Yes, I mean the black PVC pipe. Since it's flexible I got in the habit of calling it a hose. "A rose by any other name" . LOL
