This is our first year in our new house and we have to start from scratch on our garden. I have always wanted to do a Japanese garden and told my husband there was no time like the present! He had a very talanted man in our area make me a lovely Japanese foot bridge out of cedar for my birthday. The "pond" I plan on putting under it will be lawn edging filled in with alyssum (no water ponds because of mosquito/gnat problems). I have just planted a wisteria on my trellis and have also gotten several azaleas.
Does anyone have any idea on oriental-looking plants that will grow in zone 9a and tolerate partial shade to some full shade? I prefer perennials and need something with color for the summer months.
I don't plan on doing all of this in one season. Now that my husband is retired, we plan on having gardening be one of our major hobbies as we both enjoy it.
Thank you so much for any ideas you suggest.
Plant ideas for Oriental Garden
Thanks, jess...I have a couple of spots where they would work...if not too big...guess I could keep them pruned.
Any ideas on something one to two feet in height? Am putting in a lot of azaleas because I love them but need some color for in front of them for when az's aren't in bloom.
I don't know what evergreens grow there, but there is a beautiful Japanese garden in St. Paul and it has many beautiful evergreens.

this is to the Japanese garden, check out the conservatory as well. This is one of my favorite places in the area. It is a fantastic place on a cold winter day. The Japanses garden isn't open in the winter though.
Make sure you check out the home page you will see larger photos and some animals as well. (It is a park and small zoo)

i think podocarpus are very oriental looking if you let them grow natural. don't box them up. you can prune away and they don't mind a bit and their new leaf color is a nice contrast to the older leaf color. check them out at any Lowes or HD. they are used quite a bit here in central florida and they tolerate shade well. i have one in a pot and i don't plan on letting it get big.
