A bad store here too. ICK!! My feet are so wet too.
Sue where did you get that Carol one?? I love it.
Here is the one I got you Sue. Lali, can you tell me the name again?? I love textured ones the most.
Be careful Sue of the cordyline and snails. The babies here feast on mine. It looks just terrible.
Whos sick of this weather
oh oh oh, Kell, it's gorgeous! I love the big leaves!
Yes laurie, Cottage Gardens in St. Helena. Funny that they are giving them wonen's first names. Did you say we may be able to get in there even though they are wholesale? Kell, I got that one in a 4" pot at the Oakland Longs, $4.99.
I never did get potting soil, by the time I got out there, it was pouring. So I went to a bakery and bought fresh artisian sourdough bread and right across from them was a Border discount books. I found 4 garden books. If you can't garden because of the rain, you can at least armchair garden! It's getting pretty bad when you even head to the garden section of a grocery store.
Begonia 'Paul Hernandez' (A cross between b. luxurians and I think b. gerhtii?)
We can call and ask to get in, I know some people who know some people who know the owner. (kidding) I can always call and ask.
I can tell you that it's name is not Carol. It's a funny story in a way. I'll tell you someday when we gallop.
Well Sue, you grabbed that begonia right out of my cart. For shame on you!!. Patricia just told me she was there today! LOL. We need a group discount.
Sounds like you had fun even in the rain.
Oh Lali, get us in, weee eup weee eup. (I am singing) We need begonias cheap.
Kell, can you shoot me the name of that begonia I snitched a cutting of ? the one in the 1 gal pot.
If you all want to cruise through Napa Valley, we should set up a fall gallop. Do a bit of wine tasting (or more than a bit, again, I know people who know people who make great wine!), a bit of galloping, some nice lunch at one of our hoity toity outdoor restaurants. Crush is the best time of year here!
Begonia 'Paul Hernandez' OHHH, it's on my wish list, somewhere, can't find my desk right now because of the mountain of paper but I know I wrote it down from a image somewhere online because of it's huge leaves.
Kell, they had lots of the 'Carol' left.
I love the valley in the fall. We usually try to hit new wineries.
Took this shot a few years ago, in the vineyard behind Niebaum-Coppola vineyard. It was Nov and the colors were so brilliant.

We should rent a limo so we all can partake of the grape juice.
I tell you I have such a guy. My DH got home at about 9:15 tonight, left at about 6 AM for work. He has worked about 7 weeks with not one day off, (tax time) 12 to 15 hour days. He is getting into bed and I remember that one end of the hoophouse fell down again in the storm today. Whoa........... he puts his regular clothes back on and goes out in the rain to jury rig it. My hero!!
I also killed about 100 more slugs and snails on my way out to the begonia. I swear the snail bait is feeding them. I didn't have gloves on so my fingers got all slimey and I had run out of Ajax, the only stuff I know that gets rid of the slime. So ICK!
OK Lali, just for you I went out and took a picture of Margaret's label. Does this look right??
Hi
I would love to know where the longs in Oakland is, what street? I work in Albany (right next to Berkeley) so I could swing by .
Sue you sound like me in roll reversal, my Daughter is as much in love with plants as I am. She is busy with a growing family but we find time to go nursery hopping once in a while. She lives in Oakley so we mostly go in that direction.
Kell your DH sounds terrific!

Ok I am a remedial student, what can I say? So is the begonia I have for Sue a Paul Hernandez??
Oh Linda, I sure do. He didn't make out as well as I did.
Sue your picture is so pretty, so well framed. You take the best pictures. I am thinking of taking a course.
Lali, what was this one called at the Arboretum?
Kell and Sue, that one just above is b. 'Gene Daniels' and it's a keeper! I am presently killing mine. But have one last cutting down. Fingers crossed for roots.
Yes, Kell you bought b 'Paul Hernandez' for Sue.
I believe I reached nirvana today. Volunteering at the arboretum is my calling. I was in heaven. If I wasn't so darn tired, I'd elaborate but suffice it to say, I had a superb day despite the rain.
and my oh my the begonias, and everything else .... sigh!
My Maples bow to the rain as they fill their leaves with living water.
Might as well get some poetry out of this rain!
Lovely Haiku, Doss
LOL Lali. I would say 'Gene Daniels' was a keeper if I had it. I just loved how the sun went thru it and showed the purple reverse. The pressure is on you to make it live and prosper and reproduce. LOL
Sue read up on your Paul Hernandez http://members.aol.com/Btbegonia/shrub.htm
Makes me want to keep it.
B.'Paul Hernandez', although this plant has been out for awhile, it is just starting to gain in popularity. It is probably the largest growing begonia, or at least the largest that I can think of and is very fast growing. The leaves can get 2 or more feet across and are interestingly cut and have a puckered texture. A small sale plant may not look exciting but anyone who has seen a mature plant wants it. I have 3 plants just because it is so spectacular. The blooms are small white flowers held in huge upright clusters that can be a foot across and only accent further an already awesome plant. I have seen plants of B.'Paul Hernadez' that were 8 foot tall and I have seen some that were 6 feet or more across so if you want a large showcase plant this is the one. It
Linda, you will love Longs there. They have a huge outdoor section in the front but also on the side that you get to thru the store. They have every kind of soil additive you would ever want. And most you have never heard of so you had no idea how much you really needed it till you see it there. Also go to the Ace Hardware 5 mintes from there in Piedmont. Then 5 min from there is Lakeshore gardens which is such fun to explore. Not big, so you can go fast. If you have kids with you, bring bread to feed the 20 kinds of birds there on the lake.
So Lali, this one was at Lakeside. Is it Paul Hernandez??
PS Doss, you almost make me like the rain. LOL
Yup, Kell looks like Paul.
And while you can't tell the size of the leaf from the photo, I suspect it was dinner platter size?
Yes, huge. Funny that I am so drawn to all the HUGE begonias. A well defined trait I have. I like big, bright and different.
Hi Nurserydude! I hear you are a JP expert. I so love the look of them. I found the prettiest one the other day at Lakeshore. The spring colors are so varied, buff and pink and a golden leaf. Any chance you know which it is?
Kell, that's the same description I read yesterday, sounds exciting!
So this Lakeside garden center, is it on Bellevue Ave next to Lake Merritt? I am getting my Mapquest maps ready!
Laurie, have you ever been to the Peacock Horticultural Nursery in Sebastopol? I have a 10% off coupon I picked up at the flower show. They grow rare and unusual plants...Arisaema, Restio, Beshorneria, CLIVIA, Dyckia, Epimedium, Gasteria, Ligularia, Podophyllum, Manfreda, Puya, Rohdea and others. Don't worry, I didn't suddenly learn all that latin, I copied it off the card, I have to go Google most of those. LOL
HEY, is that the SUN I see shining outside???? I thought someone left the bathroom light on at first!
This message was edited Apr 13, 2006 8:00 AM
I do not think I have heard of that one. We will have to ask Zuzu if she has heard of it. Sound slike we NEED to go ASAP. I love how you capped CLIVIA!! LOL. You are so bad.
We also need to come to your house for fresh orange juice this morning. YES SUN!! ALL day??
Well shoot Lali, I clicked on extended forcast in your pic and it woud not work. What is the extended one? Is the rain ever going to stop?
OK Do they sell - begonia Paul Hernandez - at longs ?
http://www.begonias.org/greenhouse/bArticle.asp?ArticleID=109
Yeah, I looked at that yesterday, but there's hope for the extended forecast next week starting Tues.
How do I get a screen shot?
No Tony, didn't see one or believe me it would have been in my cart! Kell saw that one at Lakeshore.
Noiw Kell, looking at the link Tony put up, I think that shot of the leaf you saw at Lakeshore may actally be something else. It's more palm-like.
I wish Longs would get some interesting ones in!! We need to get them a better supplier.
Tony, I found the one I got for Sue at the S F Arboretum sale last week. They have a specialty begonia lady there named Maragaret who propagates great begonias for their sales.
I saw that pic when I was searching last night. But look at all these Sue.

I am lost as far as begonia names go, Lali is the begonia brain.
Me too, so much to take in.
By the way, I thought it was time to make a part 2 of this thread, it's getting a bit long, thanks to us!

So Gary, your camera is finally doing the right thing by you? Beautiful photos.
I spent some time the other day at the Carlmont nusery in Belmont and bought a A. Palmatum Tsukushi gata (yes, Gary had to part with one) and a Villa Taranto from Gary. It's a gem of a nursery that you have to find behind a shoppping center. Unless you know it's there you'd never find it but they have more varieties of Japanese Maples than Regan's and lots of beautiful things you may not find other places. On the way out I saw the same cultivar of Tiarella that I had just ordered from a specialty on-line nursery.
http://www.carlmontnursery.com/
I was there several times a few years back, Doss. I must go back the next time I go to Golden Nursery. Regan's in years past have had so many JM. I am floored by them. But I have noticed this year they didn't have the burlapped balls in when I was bareroot rose shopping. When I collected JPs I would go in Nov to pick mine out fast. Old man Regan had great Oregon connections.
I guess you can only collect JM for a limited amount of time unless you have unlimited resources and space. Not like daylilies or iris where you can trade, sell, or give them away. :-)
Oh they broke my heart, Doss. I had mostly variegated and the lace leafed which I would mail order and find at Regans. It was when they were not so easy to find locally. I even had big ones I had grown up into 25 gallon pots. I had a huge collection. It was my only true love at the time. I thought nothing of spending $300 or $400 for one if I just had to have it. I got verticillium wilt and I watched practically all of them die. Some took a week, some took a few months. It was just terrible to see. I hardly gardened at all after the disaster for a few years.
This is the first year I have bought any since. I finally had to have a Ukigumo again. I loved that one so much. I am trying not to get too attached to it.
Made me realize nothing is forever so you best enjoy what you have this minute to the fullest.
Kelly, I am so sorry that you lost all of those trees! What a tradgedy.
Mountain Maples have suggested that Pro-tek and Dyna Grow are supposed to help with verticullum wilt and leaf burn. (buy it somewhere else though where it's cheaper) I've used it on my maples and I think that it really helps with leaf burn. None of my trees are in pots however. I don't do it once a month though like the directions say.
Here's another solution.

This report also suggests that fertilization may be key.
