And Dave, in my humble opinion, this would include prairie restoration and other wildlife habitat restorations, so you might want to include a blurb about that in your introduction, for the terminally confused.

So, we have a forum called "Wildlife". The description is: "Here's a forum to discuss ideas and questions on creating a wildlife habitat in your gardens". However, most postings, including mine, are about wildlife we've seen in our backyards. Others are nice photos of wildlife we've seen elsewhere. Some, including some of mine, are actually about creating a wildlife habitat in your garden. What to do?

I agree that, rather than try to get Wildlife posters to stick to the initial theme, a new forum is needed. The books I have seen in this regard have three themes: Wildlife in general, Birds, and Butterflies and Hummers. There is a DG forum called "Gardening for Butterflies and Hummers", so I think we need TWO new forums: "Gardening for Birds" and "Gardening for Other Wildlife". I think attracting mammals, for example, is very different from attracting birds, which is my main interest. If this isn't practical, then I'd vote for just "Gardening for Wildlife". [But then, why separate out butterflies and hummers?]

In any case, the description for the Wildlife forum should then be changed to describe what it actually is: a place to show and look at wildlife that members have attracted to their gardens, either by gardening for wildlife or by accident. And a redirection under "Wildlife" to the new "Gardening for Wildlife" would help.

The new forum(s) would attract both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous gardeners, which I think is fine.

birdman, just my own personal observations...people who are trying to create a butterfly or hummingbird garden aren't necessarily wanting any and all wildlife. It's been another observation that most who attract birds, also want to attract all aspect of wildlife. Hence in a wildlife forum, you might find a post asking how to keep coons or whatever animal from raiding the nest the cardinal just laid eggs in. But they aren't wanting to rid their yard of the coon. Gardening to attract wildlife is attracting all wildlife. My friend wants hummingbirds, but she doesn't want coons, possums etc. If at a later date you'd like to see a forum for something like birdwatching, I'd ask for it.

If gardening to attract wildlife is attracting all wildlife, then why have a separate butter/hummer forum?

I realize we could split off into many fragments. My interest is attracting birds of New England to my yard to eat, live, breed, migrate through, bath, nap, etc., which is different from birdwatching per se. I don't want deer, skunks, and racoons, although I get them all. We get fox, bats, an occassional coyote, and battalions of squirrels. I love to see them all, but on a 100 x 80' back yard I don't plan a habitat for them. And I definitely don't want cats, even though some consider them wildlife. I love them inside, but they kill millions of songbirds a year.

I think we need more feedback as to how or how not to divide a general Gardening for Wildlife forum. Like some others, I'm interested in North American animals only. And flying fauna primarily, including birds, butterflies, hummers, and bees. But perhaps it's better to be more inclusive in the beginning and to sub-divide later if requested by enough members.

I liked Backyard Habitats, but any name is fine with me. I want a forum that attracts ALL wildlife. We have destroyed so much natural habitat and I would like to have some kind of sanctuary for the wild life. My suburban backyard isn't going to be big enough for very much, but I would like to know what I can do.

We have a little over 5 acres here and I'm in the process of trying to cut down the amount of it that we groom. (Currently all of it). Way too time consuming. I have an area surrounding the house figured out that I want to keep for yard and gardens. I'm working on a pathway down to the secret garden area, and I've been planting between 50 and 100 trees a year in an effort to return the rest of it back to the wildlife. I just hope I live long enough to get it done and see the results. Trees are sooooo slow!

Gardening for Wildlife was the clear winner for names, so by popular request, here is the new forum! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/606129/
