Spring Bulbs Pictures & Discussion: Part IV

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Woodland is right! I've found I need to take advise from Mother Nature in designing a garden here. If I get too persnickity, things look out of place, lol. This is the other side of the same tree, showing spanish bluebells popping up. The straw is the winter protection on a hydrangea.

A little better shot of the primula and muscari with daffs. There are Frittilaria imperialis planted under the muscari, but I see nothing of them yet.

Last one, I promise. The back side of the same tree showing the path along the creek I'm calling the "Hosta Walk"

Oh Neal... its just lovely!!! I can envision it with all the colors & greenery of the season to come!

Thanks wallaby! It does match the picture of H. orientalis! I'm just so thankful that it finally bloomed! It takes several years of patience....

Thanks also gemini_sage! The Hyacinths have really popped out in the last couple of days thanks to the warm temps! I have them planted right next to the garage, so that every time we open the door, we will receive a delightful whiff of their fragrance!

Your woodland garden is lovely! It will be full of color very shortly!

Well - I took these pictures on a very rainy cold day. Someone sent winter back here today! :-(

Here's a few shots of my Helleborus - too wet to kneel down to get better shots.

And the crocus & sedum on my rocky hillside by the garage. (Boy was this a LONG TERM project.)

And a particularly pretty sedum - will be dividing and spreading this around. A real winter stand out.

And the crocus that were just glorious open yesterday but holding tight in the overcast today.

And the crocus in front of my greenhouse. I started with ~dozen in one spot. I divided them last spring
and now have quite a show. (Again - not so glorious in the overcast).

Narcissus (maybe Tete a Tete?).

Tam, what variety are the Crocus? Is that Sedum 'Angelique?'
Neal, I've always wondered where you garden, what a dream.
Shirley; A pure white Hellebore is very desirable, good job. (I mailed Debbie, thanks)

Fancy, Fancy...

wow! i was out all day, and i come home to this. GORGEOUS!

i need more land, lol. neal, tam, i'm envious.

i must plant more hellebores.

monday again tomorrow. have a great week, everyone! i hope you have better weather forecast in your area. just more rain here.

=)))

Some of those crocus are vernus twilight and some are tommasinianus mix.

I don't know the variety of the sedum - I used the labels for a few varieties when I
planted them - for those that looked special to me. I'll see if its still there. (I got a
bunch of sedum that didn't sell at the Rock Garden Society plant sale last year.)

Tam

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Beautiful Tammy! Love the sedum, those crocus, that lovely hellebore, and your hillside looks amazing. I can tell lots of hard work have gone into that area (it makes my back hurt comparing to my hill, LOL). I'd love to see how it developes as the growing season progresses.

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Thanks everyone. Glad that white crocus problem is solved. I keep a list of all my plants so I was pretty confident :) The camera I have is an Olympus C5050z - a great macro facility for all of those close ups. More snow and freezing temps - best stick to the decorating rather than gardening this week!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Okay, I haven't had any spring crocus planted (other than in the yard way out by a large tree that I planted last fall) for YEARS. At least five, probably more like ten years since I've seen any come up. I have this small area on the south side of my house that I have had zinnias and cosmos for many years and in the last two years, it's been planted with daisies. So imagine my surprise when I opened the blind this morning and saw THIS!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I planted some 'Red Magic' hyacinths last fall and there are no signs of them yet. Is it maybe too soon for them in my zone?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

kb that crocus almost looks like a species, what a pleasant surprise! They must have set seed. I think it will be too soon for your hyacinth, we are having very cold weather still and mine are just peeping out of the soil.

Galanth your camera does do a great job of macro shots, they have that 'professional' touch.

I'm not sure your crocus is Snowstorm, I came across it in PF by accident while doing another search, and that has a very dark purple stem base, again the difference is stated by Todd, search on!

Tam your narcissus do look like Tete a Tete, well done! It must be warm where you are? We are having days of 36, 38F, not ending yet, with snow flurries. Things just have to open in the end, but they ae a month late. It seems we are never going to warm up!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Here's a better picture, although it's a bit blurry, because we've got high winds right now (under a tornado watch, with 69° on the thermometer!). Does this help with the ID? Those were planted so long ago, I have no clue what I put in there. I also have a double snowdrop just about to bloom, and the thing is barely out of the ground!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I went out to check the hyacinth locale again, and you're right. They're there, big and fat pips down under a bit yet. :-)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Tammy those pic are so lovely
KB, the blue on that plant is almost blinding!
Steve, the pic posted on 3/11 looking from one of your back windows, I love it! the yellow tulip, and yellow and white hyacinths. I love that!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

And that's exactly how it looks in real life, too! Any ideas as to what it's called?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Love that electric color Kylee! What a fun suprise. I have hyacinths at several stages now. The ones that have been there a couple of years are the tallest, the ones I planted in mid fall about an inch behind those, and the 50% off December planted ones are just starting to surface. I'm so relieved and happy to see the clearance frenzy/gluttony is going to pay off, lol.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh no not the clearance frenzy/gluttony invasion!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh yes, they're like heroine to me! No will power here, hehe.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh there's plenty of WILL power, just no WON'T power!

somewhere, PA

ROTFLMAO!!! That's it. Just no WON'T power anywhere in these parts either!

Its 68F outside tonight. At almost 8pm. And snow is in Fri's forecast. Weird weather!
I've got lots more bloom than anyone else around here 'cause I'm on the southern side
of a little mountain. And that hillside is packed with rocks baking in the southern sun. :-)

And that crocus is just wonderful KB. Lets hope one of these awesome bulb-a-holics can
identify it for us all.

Tam

Denver, CO

Gluttony? Naw, none here.
Has wnyone else ordered from B&B and also started a sale list?
Kenton

Corte Madera, CA

what sale?

=)))

Denver, CO

When they go 25% then 50% off. I forgot to call them with some real gonads to ask blatantly when things go on sale. Some things, as experiments, are best left as cheaper acquisitions, eh?

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

well thank you vossner :-) I thought it was cool looking as well.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm kicking myself for not getting photos of the crocus blossoms that have been popping up all over... I'll have to see if I can find my notes to identify varieties... hopefully they will not be flattened by the forecasted rainstorm tonight.

The thought of these newly opened miniture dutch iris being flattened by the rain was just too much, though, so I went out at midnight and took a few photos... right out in front of the house! I hope none of the neighbors were looking out the window, because I'm sure it seemed like an odd time for photos.

I planted a mix of blue, purple, and yellow mini iris 2 years ago... Last year, the blues were also the first to bloom, but it was a blossom here and another over there... Today, I was delighted by the sudden appearance of these exquisite bouquets of bloom!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I planted a BUNCH of Dutch iris last fall, and they came up a bit last fall, too. They're still just green spikes in the ground right now.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

BTW, Kenton commented about the difficulty of identifying favorite varieties from mixes so you could buy more of the same.... We had a favorite among our mixed daffodils and spotted it in a Breck's catalog photo, also in a mix! I called them, and not only were they able to identify it as Geranium Daffodil, they even told me where I could purchase it -- from Dutch Gardens, a chief competitor!

I don't know variety this blue iris is, but I sure do like that lovely purple 'George' that Shirley posted!

I couldn't resist posting this closer look...

Mmmmmmm......yummy!!

Denver, CO

Critter, what bush is above your delightful blue creatures?
'Geranium' is an awesome heirloom- I have to get some next fall.
(Very fragrant and very late blooming)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Geranium is among my very favorite daffs; the scent wafts in the breeze, and they are so long lasting and showy. I had bought some a couple of years ago for this garden, and last year moved several more here from my mother's house and can hardly wait! I found where I'd missed some at her house that are coming up now, so as they go dormant later I'll be sure to snag some for you Kenton.

Sweet iris reticulata, critter! Mine were all planted quite late, so they're just sprouting. Next year they'll be on schedule though.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

critter your Iris ret have bunched up well, they do seem to get patchy, some will grow well while others disappear for a while. It is still good to get them growing every year as they are supposed to be treated as an annual. My I reticulate near the south wall opened earlier, I now have some next to my host bed flowering, behind the crocus, and I am pleased to see them every year. Some of my Narcissus Jetfire seem to have disappeared and I blame the mole for that, but others are bunching up nicely and close on flowering.

kb I have had some Dutch iris in the ground for a few years, and some of them return every year and get better, but don't flower every year, they are so pretty. Mine have foliage on now, they do grow that early. I would love to be able to ID your crocus but blues can be difficult!

Steve where are all yours? We want more!

kenton how is the poor Dracunculous? I am praying for it!

I am often out at night with my digi camera, that's the best time for some pics, I have infrared and it takes perfect pictures. Others may not understand!

'Geranium has also been on my list for a while, perhaps this autumn.

My latest I. reticulata, it has 4 flowers at the moment. I had put I. danfordiae in as well but they just peeped to the surface and disappeared!

gorgeous blooms as usual! so glad to be able to check here mid-day. though i have something not so good to report:

remember i was so happy about the little terrace here at work that i can fill with plants? well, someone took the POT overnight and left the bulbs (they are about to bloom). i can't wait to get home and get them planted again. i'm torn between getting upset and insulted - - - the daffodils are pretty healthy and plump, and i bet will be beautiful once in bloom. at least whoever did the bad deed, didn't destroy the plants. then i'll be more heartbroken.

do i bring more plants to work? heavier pots? lol.

this is supposed to be a "nice" neighborhood.

=(

i hope you're all having a great day.
