I've been trying to research Fire-Retardant Gardening on the web, and have found a few resources with plant lists, but am just not sure which direction to take. So, I thought I'd ask my brilliant friends at Dave's Garden for ideas as well. :)
I'd appreciate any suggestion on plants or trees that are:
- Fire Resistant or Retardant
- ornamental or at least somewhat attractive (will settle for interesting!)
- for the California/Oregon border area (a bit in from the coast- zone8, I believe?)
- would make a good gift
Space for planting isn't a problem, there are sun and shade areas, hills and flat.
I'd initially considered sending some Dogwoods, because they are my favorites and I found them on a few lists. However, I've personally have had a few bad experiences trying to raise dogwoods myself. Any thoughts??
Thanks so much!!

Many native prairie plants would be fire resistant. Fire was one of the tools Mother Nature used to maintain diversity. Check with a native plant society for the State in which the person resides and ask them for a list of appropriate plants. We're not talking wildflowers (naturalized plants) here but actual North American native plants that would have been indigenous to the area where the gift recipient lives and gardens. Native plants generally have very deep roots. That's what you need to look for.
