My garden is coming along really good this year! I moved one of my Barlow's next to my 'little lanterns' in hopes of an interesting cross.
Tulips are coming well and so are my lilies and daylilies. I trimmed back my heucheras as they were getting too stemmy. I think my flowering almond might be going to flower this year!...It's only a 2 year old shoot off the base of another bush. Not ever 12" tall!
Steve
Checked the garden today and all of my columbines have survived our weird winter. I cannot wait for their flower display. Lots of things are sprouting earlier this year. Hope this means a great gardening season.
Michelle
We had a very weird winter here too Michelle. We had no snow cover for most of the winter and I think my Heliopsis might not have made it....or its just late to come up maybe? I've heard that since we didn't get alot of snow it might mean a DRY summer...........I hope not.
Steve
Yes this winter has been so weird, all we had up until Feb was rain
not much frost and yesterday i was digging up some columbine i had in my nursery bed and i could shove the shovel down with no problem.
It was like that all over my garden. Now im not complaining i think its great yes articfire my plants are comming up like gang busters to even my peonies are up and we could do with a nice warm summer
last years was the bits here it was wet ,wet ,wet i spent the nice days cutting grass were it was so wet it grow so fast i couldn't keep up with it.Articfire your summer was like that as will i think.
Erynne nise seedling what color will that one be ,i dont have that one,ya i know very odd that i dont lol.
I gave up counting mine when thay start sprouthing thay realy grow fast.
We got more snow in one snow storm at the end of March then we did during the entire winter. Last year I planted a Hardy Passion flower that I started from seed and I hope it comes back. It doesn't come out till late though, does it?
I had to go look up Aquilegia chrysantha on google image, as I searched it but it didn't come up in plant files. Maybe I should have just searched for Aquilegia.....
One or my columbine seedlings coming up has a nice dark redish/green tinge to the leaves. I just can't wait till they flower
Steve
will last monday my wife and i get the B-BQ out of the shed the snow was to deep for my wife to walk in she would go to her hip in it,today i raked up the dry grass in the same spot .I couldnt belive how fast it went.
Summer cant come fast enought for me,even though it was a realy warm winter so to speak, it was way to long for me it seamed to start in sept and stayed wet until Feb and it is raining again now man how can people live in a rainforest is be-on me.
We got around 2' or so snow through out the whole winter...thats it.
I can't wait for summer either( who can?) LOL......although sometimes it gets a little too hot here...Then you have to water, water, water!!!
Oh gees my greenhouse is full of columbine i love this time of year.
How is everone doing with there garden.
It been warm here the last two days and things are comming up all over the place .
I wish I had a greenhouse....well...I do....it just doesn't have a roof yet.
At the moment its just filled with patio furniture. Most things are coming up good. I think I might have lost a couple perennials over the winter but other then that it's good.....
Steve
Hello again. My spring garden is coming along. Have had beautiful crocus, and today the first daffodil. grape hyacinths showing color. Phlox is up and looking good. Miniature rose putting on lots of new growth, but new floribunda looks dead so far. Ladybells coming up, but it seems I lost one to the voles. chives almost ready to harvest. Seedlings started all over the place in here. Been moving rocks around the little pond to make the gardening area larger. It will look a lot better, I think. I love spring, but so much cleaning up to be done!
BAM
BAM,
I just love your DG name! You have lots of activity happening in your garden. Lots of great stuff happening here as well. My pulmonaria's are all up and a couple of them have set bud. My arabis(white and the pink) are completely in bud. Tall Phlox are up a couple of inches, Agastache Honeybee White and Blue have lots of growth as does Agastache Pink Pop. My hardy geraniums have come up except for Rozanne so I will wait another month or more before declaring it MIA. All of my columbines are awake and growing like crazy. Daylilies are poking up thru the ground. Going to cut back my catmints, globe thistle and irises today. Spring is my favorite time of year. I love seeing everything waking from their winter sleep.
Michelle
yes me to articfire , some of my lupins have bit the dust thankgod
thay spread like crazy, were do the seed come from i dead headed them but there is always some that come up ,mmm the wife will like that its her favorite plant and i dont think much of them.
SW whats your green house made of mine is glass, put new windowes in my house a couple years ago ,when thay were out and piled up what a lot of them ,they were the older type with storms aswill
didn't want to through them away so i started a green house with them
and built a couple cold frams as will.
Gees it gets hot in there but the plants love it .
digging, my greenhouse is made of a type of plastic called polycarbonate. It's supposed to work really good.
It'll be alot of fun too see what I can grow in it once its done...
Steve
Oh a friend of mine has one made with that stuff she sayes its better then glass, the plants are less likely to burn.
Although i myself like the glass i have shades i open and close if i think its getting to hot.
This year im thinking i might get a misting system for mine i seen one in the leevally cataloge was a bad price .
You may want to check out something like that for yours steve or you will spend your days watering your plants yourself.
A misting system sounds good, but I'm not quite that far yet.....
We're still thinking of how to heat it in the winter once we get the roof on....thinking maybe using solar power to run a heater, just to keep it above freezing....well, that's what I'd like anyways. How warm does yours get on a winter day? And does it stay warm through the night?
Sorry about the type-0 i ment it wasn,t a bad price.
It's funny Steve you said that because i was woundering the same thing the other day.
Will i have a idea im stealing this from someone els we where talking about useing a water bed heater for a plant heating pad and this woman said she used one she had to heat her green house and this is what she done.
First she but down a layer of bricks on top of them she put the heater,on the waterbed heater she put two water bottles you know the kind. anyway she filled them with water and heated the water with the heater and the worked very will heating her green house,
I havented tryed mine yet im using it to make a incubator for my son he want us to hatch some chickens.
Anyways is that a kool idea for a heater i thought it was

Where do you get a water bed heater? It's a very inventive idea!!! The solar panels we were looking at were from Canadian Tire...I think. That way your hydro bill wouldn't go up and we'd be using solar energy. does your green house get very warm inside on a winter day?
Thank you, Arctic. I never remember everything when I start listing things off. I also have daylilies up, lilies of the valley coming up, no Solomon's Seal as yet. cleaned most of my irises, and they are growing. The Siberians are just breaking ground.
Digging and SW, wouldn't just passive solar work with a brick floor laid inside the greenhouse? or bricks and a largish water tank which would warm up. Wish I had one to worry about heating! LOL! Then I would not end up crowded out of my home with seedlings every spring! BAM
Yes it doze get realy hot,as a matter i had hyberet T roses in there last year bought them on sale and thay grow all winter when i went to put them in my garden thay were huge.
As for a waterbed heater i got mine form a bed i had but if you check out the classified add you may get one cheep our even a bed and just use the heater or ask around maybe someone you know might have one kicking around.
I'm temped to try mine ,just to see if it would work, and thay are rated for shock ,will that would make sence daaaaaa waterbed .
When i heard of this idea i though it was one of the best ideas that someone came up with in awile.
and using solor panels is even make it a better idea,
I,ve tried light bulb but you would need quite a fue to warm it up to a good temp, but the heater you can control the temp.
Yeah, I like the idea of some sort of heater...
We've also been saving black plastic jugs that we want to fill with water to help warm it as well. Maybe I asked this already before Digging, but do/did you have a heater in there now or this past winter? Right now all I've got is weeds mostly in mine, growing under the pile of patio furniture....I'll have to get it cleaned out soon.
Steve
No i never had it heated in the winter befor, but it would be great for starting seeds earlyer.
And as for the weeds i get them to in mine and all i do is cover the ground with black garbage bags the sun heates up the grown and the weeds starts to grow but were its dark thay grow legy and the heat kills them.
just dont mix the soil very much after or you will get a new batch of weeds growing.
I read some were that weed seed can stay dormant for years and when brouht to the serface thay sprout.
It drives my nuts weeding very carefully and the next year after working the soil there back.
But thats the life of a gardener
Thanks for answering all my greenhouse questions Digging. I just want to get an idea of what to expect once mine is done. I know what you mean about weed seeds staying dorment FOREVER.......We have a composter and when you use the soil in the garden you have to pull allsorts of stuff like melon vines, morning glories(I've since learned NOT to compost old morning glories) and all sorts of other stuff. I'll have to try the black plastic to get rid of those weeds in the greenhouse although there will probably be lots of flower reseeds in there from last summer. Tough choice. Like you said, thats the life of a gardener!!!
Steve
No problum my friend glad to help.
Im checking into buying a bigger greenhouse this year if everything goes the way its planed.
I hope things go as planned for you and you get your new greenhouse.
Although they usually don't!(for me anyways) LOL
I'm hopeing to get the roof on mine this year too.
Oh i hope thay do ,I have the same problum if something is going to happen it will.
We have a classified mag call buy and sell there was one in it .
29'X91' what i wouldn't give for that thay were asking 4000 for it to steep for my blood but one could allways dream.
Ooohhhh........All the plants that could be grown in a greenhouse like that....I don't even know if it would fit in my backyard! But you're right...........we can always dream.....
Steve
Whit a greenhouse like that i would make my garden fit.
I have about 2 acers to work with ,now its not all cleared yet
Steve how big is yours
Oh my gees winter is back, went to work last night it was drizzeling came home there was about 6cm of snow on the grown,i wanted to herl.
Can you emagin, nothing harmed checked the moring and now YES,YES its all gone again,But its so cold i hate it.
digging,
The weather here has been horrible as well. We had a straight week of rain and high wind. Today is sunny but with north winds it is still quite cool. The temps are to warm up for the next couple of days but snow is in the forecast for Wednesday! I really want to get out into the garden to do some dividing and moving but until the weather stays consistant that will not be happening. Hopefully soon!
Michelle
Weather has been really good and warm here for the past week, but for the next five or so days it's supposed to be cooler, cloudy and rainy...
Today it's just been cloudy and earlier it was misty out. You can tell the plants love that type of weather cause they grow so much and they're just so green! Digging, my back yard is about 70' deep x 45' wide but thats not counting our patio area. I find it to be a good size :)
Steve
What a great day, today sunny warm what is with the weather .
Artic i think that weather will be heading this way by the weeks end.
I want to do some dividing as will cant make any real planes for it.
Steve that not a bad size very managable i have started making 3 more beds in the back of my house.
The snow we had the other night for some reason has made my columbine realy grow, dose that make any sence.
I think it just must be the cool/moisture from the snow that made it grow so fast. It's been cool and raining here for the past couple days and everything grows like CRAZY! Maybe I'm weird but I sort of like this cool rainy weather we've been having......it makes everything so green! I have some plants to divide too and a friend who asked for some as they're starting a new garden.
Steve
See! I'm not the only one who noticed (saying this out loud to hubby)! Steve, you're right; everything is growing like crazy, especially over this past miserable weekend. My echinacea, which I could barely see on Friday, is now 4 inches outta the ground! How does something grow that much in less than 48 hours is beyond me!! Actually, things I thought were still sleeping have made leaps and bounds in growth. Plus, many things in my unheated greenhouse have doubled in size. It's like they needed a break from the heat we were having or something.
Erynne
I didn't look in my cold frame yesterday(didn't know it was possible not to peak for a day), but I had to peak late this afternoon and I've had tons of germination over the past day or two! My Dahlia tuber 'Soul Man' is sprouting up too! Our echinacea is out quite a bit also. And more seedlings have popped up in the garden and the ones out there have grown too. I'm still waiting on a few things to come up including a Hardy passion flower........which I heard won't pop out till May....but I still worry as this is his first winter outside :)
Steve
