Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

:) Thank you! :)

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

wow echoes this thread is realy getting long.
Didn't realize that there were so meny people out there who liked columbine.
most of the people i talk to sayes thay cross to easly and selfseed every were thay are a pain to deal with but i dont think so.
Lilypon i dont think thay are short live i have some that are realy old
actualy one came from my great aunts garden about fifteen years ago and its still growing, might be the type and thats why it lasted so long

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

digging_dirt It might be the -52 degrees celcius that we can get here (combined with little snow cover). :'( Or our 40+ celcius summers that do it in here.

This winter we had more BC like conditions...little (to no) snow cover, light rain, high humidity (most of this winter my location was at 85% and higher) and a couple of days of -52 C thrown in.

Either way they just have difficult conditions to contend with here.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Wait till march 22nd.

(Zone 7b)

what happens then?

St. Peter's, PE(Zone 6a)

Was out checking on the garden this weekend and all of my columbines are starting to wake up from winter. So far it looks like most of them have returned. They only ones I am waiting on is Ruby Port, Magpie and Blue Barlow. I have had "Robin" for about 5 years and I have moved it about 4 different times. It is one tough plant. It starts blooming in late June and is still putting on a show in August. I also have "Dove" which blooms over 7weeks as well. They are a fantastic plant!

Michelle

(Zone 5b)

Echoes,
Love your short pink columbine. I ordered Aquilegia chrysantha - solid pale yellow 3-4' and A. vulgaris - solid pink 3'. In the past, I have bought inexpensive McKana giant mixed plants and if they turn out to be red/yellow combo, I dig them out of the bed, replant in a container and as long as they don't have any direct sunlight for a week or so, they transplant easily.

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

yes liypon with temps like that i can see why thay are short lived.
Or maybe thay moved lol.
I know this winters been so wierd.
christmas day we could have went out and had a B-Q and sat on the grass was like that up untail the middle of Feb now we have snow not much but some Gees i hate winter. And guess what guys
ITS THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING YES,YES

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL now moved is another possibility that I should have considered. ;)

Haven't tried growing "Datura" yet but I love the pics I see. Must put them on my wanted list for the fall.

Climbing Snapdragons sound interesting. Love to see pics of those if anyone has grown them.
Michelle

Is the climbing snapragon Asarina? If it's what I'm thinking of it's an annual.

Check out this bunch of columbines(97 to chose from). Some have pictures. https://www.jelitto.com/haupt_en.html

Hi all you columbine nuts.
Do any of you have trouble with that pesky little worm that eats the plant to sticks? I do and I'm not sure if it is an alberta problem but I start picking the little green monsters and keep at it as they have a couple of life cycles. Any good solutions?
I have nora barlow and a dark blue one that I don't know the name off. They are very hardy and even come back from the little green monsters, being dug out by kids and weed wacked by the hubby.
Ann

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

Hi annabell
I dont have much problum with pest eating my columbine,i though columbine were toxic.
Are these wormes green with small dark spots if thay are its a luper
and thay will eat anything we have had them here the only thing that worked for me was a spray i know this is spelt wrong dizanone but i dont think its made any more you could check a garden center and find out if its not made thay may tell you something to use like it.
hope that helps. If you can get something to use get it now and spray the grown i think the eggs for a new batch maybe in the soil.

St. Peter's, PE(Zone 6a)

Echoes,
Just spent the last half hour looking at the link to Jelitto. Incredible! I have received seeds from them before and they germinated quite well. They are a wee bit on the expensive side but so worth it if you can have a few people split the shipping costs.

Digger,
Your list is Fantastic! I will have to google a few of your varieties but they all sound so wonderful. Fall trading will be super!

Can't wait to see pics of everyone's Columbine this season!
Michelle

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

Thanks articfire, and dido to your list as will im going to scan in the pics of some of the ones i have this year for you, might be tomorrow or the next day later all

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Anne I get those pesky little green worms as well, they can strip a plant in about a day. I kow of no other way to get rid of them other than between my finger and thumb. I'll ask my neighbour, he's the one who showed them to me.

Linda

DigD, that's quite some list you got there too. Yes we could have a huge seed swap for sure.
Michelle, I did a group order for Jelitto a couple of years ago. The shipping is expensive, but worth it once in a couple of years to get some seeds that are hard to find in Canada. They keep well in the fridge too, if you can't plant them. (this will be edited out in a bit)

Ann, I had those little green worms last year too. Heard somewhere around here that they were saw-fly larvae, but I was never sure. I kept some at bay with a good jet of water from the hose. Think I powdered the plants too. I think rotenone might help, but doesn't look too pretty. It's one of the safer products to use. Guess it looks better than no leaves.

Echoes,
I think it is a great idea to do an order from Jelitto in the fall. I will send you a d-mail.

Thanks
Michelle

Phoenix, AZ

I've been lurking here and reading your posts with envy!! Such gorgeous colours!!

My new-to-me Swallowtail is budding and when I see the first flowers, I'll post a pic. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in swapping me some seeds in the fall?

Sure, I'll send you some. I'll try and send the ones that can take the heat the best, but you will have to remind me. I haven't had a problem sending seeds to the States.

St. Peter's, PE(Zone 6a)

Trillium,
I have no problem sending you some seeds as well. Just remind me in the fall via d-mail. My memory is good but terribly short.

Michelle

digging_dirt, Mg99 and echoes
Thankyou for your input. I have been advised to stay away from the poison's due to my lymphoma( they say this is a way to start it up again).
I guess I'll pick em and squish em again. YECH!!
Maybe I can pay my daughter and her friends to pick em and put them in a container, I could pay per worm!
Columbines are so much like a fairy flower I just have to have some in my yard!
Talk to you all later
Ann

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

annabell i read that you can use a mild watered down dishliqued as will, and i know this will sound gross but steeped out tabbaco juice will work as will suppose to be a sort of birth control.
Yes trillium i would love to trade with you

Phoenix, AZ

Thank you for the offer of the trades!! I will put a little sticky note to remind me to ask again for trades.

In the summer we disappear back home to Ontario!! We spent one summer here...suffice it to say, NEVER AGAIN!!! As long as we can travel, we're travelling!! We'll be in Ontario for the months of July and August, possibly stretching to early September. So upon my return here to Phoenix, I'll be checking for seeds.

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
Winter is back we have snow up the waazoo. but it wont last long
suppose to be +4 tomorrow yes, yes ,yes.
My seaholly seeds are comeing up about 10 now and pooking around
i seen somemore has anyone tried to grow these i think thay are a nice lookin blue plant.
I grew steel blue thisels tow years ago thay werent all that impressive,
hope these are.
what doze everyone have pland for there gardens this year.
Me im going to finish my flower broarder started it last year done 50ft now i will do the other half cleared some more land this fall im going to put some beds is this spot as will my son want us to put in a pond ,im thinking about it.

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Awwww, poor you out there in all that snow digging_dirt :o(
I saw the weather report for your neck of the woods and I just shuddered. I'll try to wish it away for ya, lol.
I sowed some Sea Holly the other day and I love the steely blue look as well; no germ as yet.
I also sowed some Hosta seed that I picked up from the Ontario Rock Garden Society kiosk when I signed up for membership at the Canada Blooms show. I happened to have a peek at them today and one has already sprouted, 10 days after sowing. I thought it would take longer than that!!
My plans for the front and back gardens this year is to just get them filled in with the plants I've drooled over for the past few months. I also want to create a forked path in the backyard with flower beds flanking the sides of it and have my cedar arbor somewhere in the middle. I can see it all in my head but implementing it as fast as I want it done is another thing. You think I'd learn to grasp the idea that a garden is supposed to be an evolutionary process, lol!!

Hmmm, now a pond would be very nice.....

Erynne

edited to add, I've started about 10 different aquilegias and it's all your fault digging_dirt!! LOL
