Request for new forum...CANNA (pretty please?)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello Dave, Terry, et all,

I hope you will consider adding a Canna forum. There seem to be many who do
want to take part, but the posts seem to get lost in all the other discussion on
the Tropicals board.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I love the site. :-)

Many thanks for your consideration. If it cannot be
done, I'll completely understand. :-)

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I'm in too! I would love a Canna Forum!

I need ALL the help and advice I can get for my first adventure in Cannas. There are some really smart growers in DG who are so shareing with their knowledge, and considering my skill in gardening I need to reach them on an EMERGENCY basis! LOL

A Canna Forum would be so helpful in pulling my irons out of the fire......uh, meant to say pulling my Cannas out of the ground!
Pati

I have several canna seeds and bulbs, but need all the help I can get, I am definitly a novice. So please count me in too... John

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

I'd LOVE to see a separate Canna forum, instead of searching for them under a "maybe they'll be listed under this" thread.....

Hi WUVIE...kinda sneaky, huh? LOL

Hi, All!
Now you're talking! Cannas rule! Ha.
Seriously, they are one of the easiest summer bulbs to grow, and boy, oh boy, are they ever prolific buggers!
So easy to grow- but they do like good rich, moist soil.
Lots of variety in both bloom and foliage color. Several different heights to choose from. They are wonderful as specimans, shorter ones wonderful in containers-the King Humbert series also work great as "privacy screens"!

Oooh, love that picture!

Indeed true about the King Humbert. Someone once sent me a Canna
tuber years ago. Over time, it multiplied enough to draw my interest, so
when a local hardware store had them on sale in different colors, I thought
"Why not?"

Well, the clerk charged me per pound instead of per tuber. Thinking that
was a heck of a bargain, I did more than stock up. Needless to say I later
returned for a second load when a different clerk informed me they were
priced PER rhizome, and the previous clerk gave me a heck of a bargain.

I now have them all over the place. Front of the yard, front of the house, side of
the house, by the birdfeeders, by the back of the house, everywhere!

I'm currently waiting on some Musifolia coming from Brian, I can't wait!

I'd also like to see a canna forum and like Wuvie, I have them tucked into all the flower beds. It would be great to learn more about them, esp. hybridizing.

Hi folks,

For those of you who grow Canna, especially from seed, I was wondering
about a technique discovered on a Canna forum which I found of interest.

It called for soaking Canna seeds in a solution of 1 part apple cider vinegar to
ten parts water in a bottle located in a warm, not hot place such as the
top of a hot water heater in a closet. Hmm.

Have many of you tried this, and if so, could you share your experiences? I
am about to try this technique, but thought I would place the container with
soaking seeds on a heated germination mat instead.

Many thanks!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Just thought I would drop by and see if there was any GOOD NEWS on our request for a Canna Forum. I know, spring is almost here and everyone is busy, but we just keep on hopeing!

WUVIE (love saying your name out loud) I don't have any answers....only questions. LOL I bought 6 Canna bulbs from Wal-Mart and only 2 came up. My year old other 4 are putting up new growth, hooray!!!

I really need to get more info from experienced growers before I put the whole bunch in the ground, along with the others I plan to order.
Pati

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello Pati,

LOL at saying my name out loud. Wuvie, Wuvie, you're my luvie. Ha ha!
The guy at the post office likes to mispronounce it as Woovie instead of
Wuh-vie.

Your local Wal Mart may end up not liking you, but you might consider
doing what I do when purchasing bagged plants from them.

I bring my package to the counter and explain to them that I am going to purchase
the item, but want to make sure the contents are all right. Sure enough, nine times
out of ten, the Canna have several dead or close to dead bodies in the package.

When you buy packaged Canna, make sure you get some that are either
sticking out, poking the plastic, or are very firm, not soft. The dead black looking
things with strings are not good Canna. Then again, you don't want one that is
doing too well in the package, or the clerk will shove it in the bag and break
off the growth. Be careful of those little babies, they are tender.

According to the clerk at Wal Mart, you can bring those dead Canna back as
long as you have your receipt. Do you feel as though you may have purchased
rhizomes which were not very viable?

:-)

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

"The dead black looking things with strings are not good Canna. "

Well, now I know! I had never seen a Canna bulb and I planted all of them. So, now I'm going out and dig up the ones that didn't come up, go back to Wal-Mart, and look at the ones I buy!

This is my hearts desire (from Karchesky) but at $18.00 a bulb I feel I better know a lot more about growing them. LOL

Variety Name: Stuttgart
Height: Very Tall
Flower Color: Apricot
Foliage Characteristics: Strongly Varigated
Availability/Price per Rhizome 18.00

Large long slender variegated white, silver, and sea-green lance-shaped leaves. Pale apricot species-type flowers. Spectacular foliage canna, but has to be grown in light shade and good moisture to decrease scald. Adding Epsom Salts will help. Very tall height.

Pati,

I just purchased Canna 'Stutgart' and C. 'Pink Sunburst' at Brent and Becky's Bulbs for $7 each. So you can get 2 gorgeous cannas there for less than the price of one 'Stutgart' at Karchesky's. Sounds like an offer you can't refuse. LOL

In the event they are out of stock, Brian's Botanicals also carries Stuttgart
for $12.00, which includes shipping charges.

I think you'll sleep better if you place an order... :^)~

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL NoH2O,,,,,. my order is already written out....ready to go!

Tropicana
Stugartt
Stripped Beauty
Pink Sunburst
Kansas City

Do you see the pattern here? All have varigated leaves. Last year I bought large one at Wal-mart, Bengal Tiger, because of the beautiful leaves. I was shocked when one day I looked at it and it had blooms. Who knew they bloomed? Then MollyMc sent me some bulbs that were already sprouted and they bloomed also. Weeee, I'm on a roll here.

Anyway.........I have found that I have bought other plants for the leaves and am pleasently surprised when they bloom. This should tell you something about my expertise in gardening. LOL

Hello Track,

Indeed a good price, and glad you mentioned this. I did not realize
Touch of Nature was affiliated with eFlowerGarden!

At first I thought the price was too good to be true, but they have a 100% positive
rating with 48 positive comments at Garden Watchdog. Hmm. I may have
to pay a visit! Thanks!

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i bought Lucifers from them a little while back. they are great people to do business with, which reminds me, i need to post in watchdog. thanks! debi

Oakland, OR(Zone 8a)

I have recently put an order in to Horn Canna Farms out of Oklahoma. They have very reasonable prices - Pretoria is $4.00 right now - and no negative feedback. I got an e-mail from they confirming the order and the requested shipping date. So far I am very happy with them. Oh, yes, and I am another requesting a Canna forum. Hope Dave and Terry will approve our request soon. Dotti

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Hi Dotti, you will be very pleased with your cannas from Horn Canna Farm. They are approx an hour away from me. I've had cannas from them and I think they are great! Now I just need to find the time to go to their Canna Festival in the fall....sounds like fun!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I am so excited!!! I bought 6 bulbs at Wal-Mart and only two grew. I went out to dig up the bad ones......and two more had put up a bright new leaf! Now I'm ready to order from a "real grower" and get some serious pots.

We have a Canna Festival in Lake Placid each August. (Near Sebring) Acres and Acres of Cannas, and the town has many antique shops. It's a real event here!

Wonder how the decision on a new forum is going?
Pati

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

And just how do we find out if we get/or have gotten a forum for cannas? Any ideas how we know if it's approved or not?

Dave or Terry will notify us here. I think when a new forum is formed, Terry moves all our chatter here to it.

Hi Mary,

Well, for one thing, you'll see us yelling "WHOO HOO" and

The 2-3 eye Stuttgart is only $3.50.
