Spring Bulbs Pictures and discussion, Part III

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Boyed I envy you! I do love the species much more sometimes than hybrids, they have a beauty all of their own!

I found a Botanical web site not long ago with seed and bulbs of many species from many of the European and Asian countries, seed is available until the end of March.

I have bought so much this year I am not going to cope, so perhaps next year I will buy some. There is a Phytosanitary charge (10 euros), but here I would not need one. The only method of payment at the moment is by bank transfer, and that can cost quite a lot.

boyed-- your little purples are so attractive. Makes me wish for spring even more. Thank you for posting.

And I look forward to your tulip pics in a few weeks!

I am always interested in what gardeners in other countries are growing!

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Superb crocuses! Thanks for posting.

(Zone 7b)

Those are lovely - I love the purple with the darker tips to the petals.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Boyed, yu have really nice crocuses - I did not know they could look so good in a pot!

Well James, congrats on your first daffodils!!

Here are some more hyacinths coming up

I was over at my friend's today- her back garden is blooming explosively. But so brilliantly, I neglected to bring my camera. Her lawn is starting to go colorful too- I will have to get there Wednesday.
K. James

What variety of Hyc is that, Steve?

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi James - it is Delft Blue. There are also a few Carnegies on there.

Denver, CO

In your opinion, how does it compare to 'Blue Jacket?' I know there must be a "best" blue out there.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Well James, it is just slightly lighter. Then you have Sky Jacket, which is a pale blue, and Blue Giant, which is a really vivid blue and probably my favorite, though it can be hard to find. I prefer Delft over Blue Jacket. Delft is also tough, reliable, and comes back well year after year for me, and is a nice medium blue. Most of the ones you see in the bed above have been in there about 4 years now. Then there's Peter Stuyvesant which is almost a dark purplelish blue. I tried a new one this year called General Kohler from Old House Gardens - in their pictures it looks purple but in my garden is very Delft-blue looking but is a double instead of a single....lemme see if I have a picture. Oh OK here's one from a couple days ago - look closely you can see the double flowers...

More Delft Blues - the tint looks a little different than in the other picture - must be the lighting. I planted these in the fall of 2002 and they seem to have perennialized.

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Zone 7b)

In the last photo, what's the name of the 3 purplish blooms behind the front ones, please?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Well what a show! I can't imagine the scent they must be giving off....mine are just pushing through the soil, 39F here today, rain, dull, horrible......

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Ooo La La, what a glorious sight!

And finally, my Color guard. They work dilligently until the tulips and all bring the band.

Your dracunculus has white marks on the leaves, I don't remember mine having those..

How come when you are in zone 7 yours is that far on, mine is still sat where it was! I'm sure there must be different variants of this, the stem on yours is so heavily marked too. Is it always this early, or is it just the unusual warm weather?

(Zone 7b)

green brain cells, maybe?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

wallaby, I think Mother Nature just wants to mess with some of us. There are many people north of me that have a lot more progress than I do. Not right, just not right.

But generally speaking, this winter has been less severe than others. Those who disagree, pls post. I am living in an 80 degree world, which might have clouded my judgement.

Corte Madera, CA

beautiful crocuses, narcs, hyacinths, and everything else in between! i obviously didn't plant enough. sigh. there is always next year....

i brought one (1) pot to work, and got positive reviews. my co-workers like the idea of having plants on the terrace.

you're gonna get them all suckered into gardening, aren't ya?

(Zone 7b)

Just look at all that room - you could fit an entire garden on there.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Anybody wanna bet how long before there are TEN pots on that terrace?

Denver, CO

It's in the stone-heated garden, and establishment/sun seem to bring out the spots. It was not spotted last year.
Plus a little warm weather- no freeze for a week now. Kind of odd after nightly lows of 15F.

Denver, CO

I've got some Aristolochia plants (not $5) that say there will be the max. number of pots that will fit on the terrace.

(Zone 7b)

With just enough room to sidle by...

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

One plant just leads to another. My house is proof of that...

Denver, CO

Not true, Kylee. One plant leads to two or ten others.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Okay. So it leads to another and another and another and another and another............. LOL

Corte Madera, CA

i LOOOOOOOVE your support and cheers! =)))

serious thoughts though. please advise. most of you know that i'm NEW at work. i'm operations manager for a general contracting firm, and "the guys" only stop by at the office an hour every other day. but they (big boss including) like the idea of plants. do i:

bring one (1) plant a week? or that is too much already?

i will also of course only do my "gardening" during my lunch break.

am i nuts?

these are more daffs, and deeper are "altari" lilies.

p.s.
i already took home and repotted the company orchid. lol.

Well thank you all - and 2zeus. those are Purple Voice I got this past fall from Van Engelen - I like the way they look :-)

Well Wallaby I still have some puching through the surface but the bulk are either showing buds or flowering now. Oh well I'll be jealous while yours are blooming and I am looking at wilting foliage I can't cut back for another two months!!

Loved your snowdrops - I planted summer snowflakes for the first time this year - I hope they look OK when they bloom!

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Tulips coming up! I'm so jazzed...

Well Wallaby it is still 73F here at 10 pm - and supposed to be in high 70's every day through the rest f the week and then back down into the normal 60's. I have a peony ready to bloom any day now.....I kinda like cold rainy weather though...

Corte Madera, CA

cold rainy weather, steve? come on over to the bay area! =) i see some buds on my peonies. no new ones this year. just growing the same set i started with.

McG, love the edges of those leaves!

EDITED TO SAY:
can't wait to add more bulbs for next year....is it too late to plant now? i saw some narcs (summer blooming, they say) on the breck's catalog that arrived today.
