More Amaryllis Blooms...

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

tazzy-- you are too funny!

Nobody can kill an amaryllis, can they?

Especially an expert iris grower like you! (-:

Well..., maybe Wallaby,.... but next time W. will just leave it under the bed in a box and it will do fine.

Oh tabasco now you have said that, just wait, you may have tempted fate! Some actually come with a virus which takes a while to kill it off, the mass breeding of them in Holland can infect their complete stocks.

I was searching on google last night and found a Dutch grower that actually sells them direct to the UK with online ordering, for delivery in Sept/Oct, but very cheap. You have to buy 3, 5, or 10, but the 3 lots are from £12.50 to £15.00 for such as the H. Reggae, yes they have it! A shame you can't buy 3 different ones! Postage is only £3.50 (cheaper than here!) towards p&p from Holland for any amount, and if you spend £25 they will give one free. They have crocus, allium and tulips too but no so cheap, poss. buy them in. They might also be better quality.

http://www.wswarmenhoven.com/products/Amaryllis_Reggae.asp

I also found on that other site a discussion on H Chico and Reggae, it seems they are both selections of the species H cybister, not a hybrid, so even better.

There is another place here that has some Hippeastrum, I found them last year when selling was done, at the moment they have H. vittatum for only £5, cheap! but post is £7.50 for any amount from a seasonal catalogue, too much for 1 bulb. They are preparing their new Hippeastrum catalogue and say it will be a unique collection, I know they had some very good ones last year so might wait and see what they have.

http://www.rvroger.co.uk/

The present Hipp. offered is in the Lily & Woodland bulbs section, they have some good ones, I like Double Record and Jungle Star, a cybister type, I think it might be nicer than the photo.

Someone placed a bid on the ones on ebay so I let them have them. I am waiting for the best!

Thanks Steve..I just thought that being the bloom was there that the chances of getting a flower on them was not gonna happen...I love my amaryllis they seem to cheer me up over the cold snowy winter..!

Loretta....

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Patti I love your amaryllis. Don't recognize it. I have two, Jewel and something else and they don't look like yours. Yours is much prettier.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Patti by the shape and yellow eye it looks like one on the rvroger link I gave, Yellow Goddess.
The site goes back to home page, if you click on the 'bulb' link at left, then 'Lilies & Woodland bulbs', then 'Hippeastrum' you will see it at the bottom. I was looking at that one and thinking hmmmm nice, but yet holding out!

Sorry Wallaby-- didn't mean to Jinx us!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Janet, you made me remember the name of my 2nd white amaryllis: Green Goddess. It's supposed to be yellow tinged, but so far, looking pretty white.

Oh gosh, don't tell me this is a mislabel! I won't jump the gun, I will wait til they bloom (pretty soon now) and I'll let y'all decide. green goddess or misnomer.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

No problem, Loretta - good luck in your Amaryllis adventures!

That's a pretty one, rose....

Hi Boyed, welcome to DG! You have some beautiful Hippeastrum and Clivia, the Clivia looks to be a special hybrid. I love the subtle colours, very pretty!

Hippeastrum Fire Dance is a single red, does it look like this one?

Pamela has similar shaped petals but is an orange red, with 4 inch flowers

Hi Wallaby,

Thank you for the links. I had a look at the varieties and think that most probably mine could be 'Fire Dance'. At least they look very similar. The only thing I know about mine, that it is quite an old variety.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Yippee more lovelies to look at! Thanks boyed and boojum.

Wallaby thanks for those links.

Blooming for me right now: an unknown that just might be 'Orange Soverign' It sure is orange in some light situations and other times it looks a deeper orangey-red. Seems to also fit the height and bloom shape.

And 'Aphrodite' is seducing me with her blooms!

boojum shieldsgardens given above on 23rd for their seed, but these are special breeds. There is also cultivation notes.

Boyed, yes I thought Fire Dance, it is a small one, but the shape of the petals look more like Pamela. If it's an old one it could be a parent of some of these. They are Dutch breeders, so the possibility is increased with being in Europe. I wonder if we could find a site listing the dates and names from the breeding? Now there's a challenge!

All these pretty pics of your flowers is giving me the wanting lust!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm in a constant state of lust. I should just stay out of the forums if I want to avoid that!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Moby - we left here 2/22 and there was one big bud on the amaryllis my son gave me for Christmas even though it was in bloom back then. We returned to six huge flowers on it and it looked even better than Christmas Day.

I'm afraid to delete all the over 700 photos on my camera (from vacation) for fear I'll lose them forever on Picasa. So I can't even take a photo of the amaryllis.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

What a nice treat to come home to! :)

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Great surprise to come home to. Aren't you glad you didn't miss it? I think I put the wrong page up for Dave Conway's (shieldsgarden) clivia plants. Let's see if this works.

The azaleas I bought (in bloom, in January, from Home Depot) are still blooming, too. Great homecoming, especially seeing the snow only on part of the gardens.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

When I was at the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show there was one large booth selling many types of bare root plants/bulbs. He told that if you plant them at least 4 inches deep that they do not have to be a houseplant. He lives in middle TN.
Is anyone else doing this?
Teresa

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Haven't tried it but for the plants I really treasure I wouldn't try it.

Here, in zone 7, I tried putting the bouganvillia outside: by spring it was dead.

Hixson, TN(Zone 7a)

I got Amaryllis in a round robin last year and it is blooming today.

What a captivating colour! Do you know the name of this beauty?

Hixson, TN(Zone 7a)

Here is one more pic

Hixson, TN(Zone 7a)

No I don't know it's name, I wish I wrote it down but I didn't. It is so pretty but my camera has a hard time taking a pic of it.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Could you ask the person you got it from? Your camera looks to be doing a great job to me! They do have trouble with reds. The petals look translucent, it has me captivated!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I have one sending up a bloom. Can't wait to see which one.

I have some pictures I just got developed. If I can figure out how to post them I will. It is one thing I can't seem to grasp and hang on to. I guess I need to put it on a post it note and stick it on the computer.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Another. Flowers are less mini than I thought, but so beautiful!

The buds are a bit creamier than the white on the flower.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Interesting! No foliage! But beautiful! :-)

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

yeh, none of my new bulbs had leaves till after the bloom.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I wonder if it has something to do with growing indoors. My two that grew indoors have no leaves before blooming but the ones planted outdoors did.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I've grown about eight of them, all indoors and all of them had foliage that grew right along with the flower stalks. Hmmmmm.....
