DFW Iris Garden Tour / Swap Combination

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Now they are saying it won't freeze just get 35-39 at night for a couple nights. I think the plants can handle that since all the rain, and it warms up during the day. Yeah!

I will have loads of Larkspur it looks like. I have potted a bunch and the patch that is still there seems to get wider.

Sharon I am sorry you aren't coming. Hopefully you can make the Statewide RU at the end of April.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Shelia Dave mail me with what you might like _ I would love a larkspur...

Sylvia - everything here is still under water... alll my beds are in standing water - I need some warm days not these cool days coming to clear up just a little of this water... I lost 4 land scaping timbers in the water somwhere they used to hold a raised bed! most of the raised bed is still here but one of the bigger bushes in the bed is flat on the side (bush was there for 4 years!) dont like that much rain at most...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch check your inbox. I have Larkspur for all I think. LOL!
Sorry you are so wet there. We had about 5 inches but since it was over a couple of days it didn't flood except at the east end of the yard this time. June two years ago was a different story. I can definatinately sympathize with the people like you that are going through that now. The plants surprisingly bounced back, the DH's shop was another story. Hopefully the wind will help dry out a bit too.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I hope so - dont you love the way plants just grow even with all the things we do to them? Got to love growing plants...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Each day I come home from work something has bloomed or put on leaves, etc. I will be so glad when I retire and be able to take time to watch some of that growing in the mornings!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

"Oh how I wish I had some of that poop."

Ya read things on this forum that ya might not ever read nowhere else....

Potted up some iris:
Crimson King (really a deep purple IB, introduced 1898)
Iris albicans, the graceful pure white "cemetary iris"

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Oops, just got corrected:

the yellow iris is Imperial Gold.
sounds better, doesn't it?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I have the Imperical Gold ones from a trade in OK - they are stuning flowers - you can see them from across the yard. I have tons of the albicans Iris too - love the way ti just fills in the little dry places in the yard here and there...

Do you have a pic of Crimson King? I have several of the bitones older purple ones is this one all one color of dark purple? If so if you would like to swap some bitoned for the deep purple? (the bitones have a name that slips my brain at the moment but will get it to you)

I'll try to find the pics.

Meanwhile, sure I'd like to trade for some bi-tones.
How many of these would you like?
They just *keep* popping!

Uh, Ted...what kind of poop?

I'll be happy to bring you some iris!

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, try this link:

http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/iris/hpgal03113132957.html?1

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Deal - I have a group blooming right now, with how fast they spread 2 fans for 2 fans sound fair?

Ted - I would love some Okra, Black Eyed Pea, and Corn.... I am out of all my seeds - maybe I can find something else for you.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Mitch have two kinds of okra and two kinds of black eyed peas. Will give you some of both.
Sheep and cow manure

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks - trying to get my veggies in order out there... anyone else reallllllllllyyyyyy excited?

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Iris for poop:
Where else would I find such a deal!

If that stuff is in some bag or container that won't leave a fragrance in my car, please bring some. I'm thinking sheep would be less fragrant/less hot than cow?

I'll bring the irises!

Yes, Mitch, I'll be happy to trade 2 for 2:
I wish more of them were blooming, now that I know I have a 3rd kind of historic.

Funny story:
This afternoon I espied a poor innocent gardener working in his flowers. So I stopped & told him how pretty they were & asked him if he liked plant swaps.

& he said, "don't know, never been to one...but I'm going to one Saturday at Bobbie's."

There'll be lots of internet gardeners, & lots more as well!

Yay!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I nabbed my sons sitter!! She is coming - never been to a swap, does not even really garden much but loves to!! Soooooooo get ready for the newbie I am trying to get the bug into!

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

I gave printed directions to the lady at the Post Office this morning.

She & I already traded some cannas (we got to talking when I mailed cannas to one of those foreign, alien, exotic places, like New Jersey, where cannas are treasured!)

Too bad we didn't think of a competition or contest earlier:

"Who can bring the least likely person to the swap/tour?
the person from the greatest distance?
the person newest to gardening?"

Maybe we can do it next time.
Have a prize.
sack of sheep doody or sumpn...

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

This is going to be a nice big swap! And such Iris to see - going to be a great day!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I am going to bring extra lanata cuttings - would Dames Rocket if anyone wants a little, not going to dig any up if I dont hear something there... ummm and some DLs for sure. I have white yarrow if anyone is interested there too... and I will see what else I can dig up when I get out there Sat morn!

Veggie tray - sooo forgot until I read down this list today!! Good thing I double checked.

Mitch

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

pampas grass anyone?
I have 2 pots of it, plants are probably about 24" tall.

& I started to divide some variegated liriope & realized that there are about 7 or 8 individual plants, so I put it in a pot for the swap as well!

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

forgot to add:

I'll bring some some red/purple Louisiana irises.

& if anyone has dianthus (pinks), I'd love to trade.

Bobbie asked me to add that she's interested in phlox.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

oooohhhhh can I get one of the pampas!!!!

Are you wanting to have the pinks that are annual? I have a 6 pack I can get ready for you from WM... if you are interested in the annuals. LMK Mitch

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

will mark your name on a pampas grass, mitch!

No no no no no, do not go to the place whose name I shall not speak & spend your money.
I don't actually *need* pinks or have to have them.
I just am becoming more appreciative of them.

The dianthus I have now are evergreen perennials, & I can't remember where they came from.

Select Seeds catalog has dianthus (for $5.95 *each*!),
& they just describe them as "fragrant flowers".
not perennials, or evergreen, or trash that you have to clear out at the end of the season...

They do have 2 kinds of seeds, "dianthus superbus" & "Sweet Williams". but again, that's all they say!

(Does anyone else always have to stop to realize that it's suberb-us & not super-bus???)

I've read that pinks are supposed to be easy to propagate.
You just cut them back in the autumn & stick the clippings in soil.
So I can try that.

Also, I can use flowering vines for an arbor.
I had hyacinth bean last year & really enjoyed it, but I forgot to collect the seeds.
Anything flowery & easy will work.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I will look and see what I can drum up... let me think on that one.

Would you like a baby Wisteria? I have one just comign up and would stay on your arbor for years to come! I wish I would have known you would have liked some Hbeans - I just turnned a whole huge bag down last week!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, I have about a dozen Hbeans that I will bring for you. Also when I went to check those, I realize I have other seeds to trade, and haven't put any plants down yet. Yall let me know what you want, because I may not bring everything because of all the Larkspur I have ready to go.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Shelia - I have places for anything cacti wise that you may want to bring but not take home (like the way I put that?) I have a Cat Wiskers I can take cuttings from for you - Maggiemoo says they root really easy.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Very wisely worded! LOL! Will bring you starts of a few smaller ones for sure, and I would love to have the Cat's Wisker cutting. Would it root in water or RH and dirt?
Oh, did you find a home for your chair yet, if not I will take it. I plan on making a grouping one day of a door, window I have, and headboard for flowering vines and other perennials. The think the chair would fit right in. I have a lot of yard that isn't encorporated in flower beds yet. LOL!

Work calls.....hope others chime in today.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I will bring the chair!! - I will bring several cuttings of the cat wiskers for you to try both ways. It over wintered with my Brugs outside on all but our coldest days when I brought it in side. Will bring the chair - and the cuttings. I am not 100% sure how to root them but will drop Mary a line and see, I think with RH and Dirt...

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Mitch, Bobbie would like the wisteria!

She also is looking for ajuga & some phlox.

There's a lady coming with herbs, medicinal & culinary.

& I gave directions to a Starbucks person last night.
She's also a personal trainer who is exploring her Native American heritage, & she's excited about plants used in medicinal & folk remedies.

This event is RAIN or SHINE!

Bring your umbrellas "just in case".

If it pours down, we'll set up the tent.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I moved a fence this year and had some wild roses climbing on it. Mowed them down and not they are coming back. Small white ones. Will dig some up if anyone wants some.
Have some stonecrop coming up also.
H bean seeds I want a few
I have some seeds for Texas Star Hibiscus

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Stonecrop, is it the bigger kind?
I love that!

Ted, do you know if it's "rosa multiflora"?
Multiflora, once used as fencing, became so established/invasive that scientists bred a virus, spread by a mite, to kill the plants.

It seems like it's called Rose Rosette Disease.

Although the wild multiflora is most susceptible, the disease has spread to other roses (many cultivars are multiflora hybrids);

it's destroyed an entire public rose garden north of Dallas.

I had some multiflora.

Although I liked it, especially in the spring, I dug it all out & put the plants in the trash rather than even trying to compost them.

so I hope your wild roses are another kind!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Will try to bring it!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I not know. I have had it on the fence for four years and it did not spread. Of course I kept it trimed a bit so it could not knag me every time I tried to mow up close to the fence.

Fort Worth, TX

Just chatted with Sylvia yesterday and for any of you that are on the fence about going....GO!!!!
Bobbie is an extremely interesting and intelligent person. You will love just visiting with her.
Her gardens are massive.
I lurk here often and am still trying to find home after GW.
The weather is great and temps could not be better.
Sylvia, I am trying to come it is just day by day right now......
All I will have is Brug cuttings. I could bring any amounts of just pain day lilies though.
Getting to see Vanessa and Adeline WOW it has been a while.
I could also bring Rose Cuttings, not rooted 50+ varieties.
Will try to make it if not enjoy and you'all have a great time.
Karen.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey there Karen, I hope you can make it. I would love to me another FW gardener. We need more of them!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Will not make it in the morning. Got my granddaughter's ball game to attend at 9 o clock in Louisville. Will get there asap, So don't forget me. LOL
Cocobid I would like some rose cuttings.
