DFW Iris Garden Tour / Swap Combination

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

What is elephant grass? Is that the tall reed looking stuff if so what are looking for in trade? Would love a bit if I have anything you are looking for are you wanting anything for the cannas too? I have 130 some feet of them but need another 100 feet or so to finish the rows around my gardens.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i'm with mitch. what is elephant grass? i might want to trade for that too.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I think this is it http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/31970/index.html if so please let me know what you are interested in trade!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

that's too tall for me. wow. thanks mitch.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Finally got into the garden to dig this morning.

Looks like my contributions are of the "old reliable" type (but I have plenty of 'em!):

lamb's ears
Kwanzo daylilies
Achillea Paprika (red yarrow)
chocolate mint
shrimp plant

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

what are you looking for Sylvia - I added a HUGE new bed area and wanted some more of the red yarrow to add to it...

BTW the one little Kwanzo I kept here I chekced on today and there are over 30 little ones all around it - going to be a stunning bunch this year!!!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

This is what it looks like early spring. As it grows taller it turns taller and darker. Keeping it trimmed down and it stays variegated.

Mitch you have a start in your name. Same with the cannas,

TA - wow love the pond there - are those the castor beans you gave me seeds from? They look great around the pond like that...

Thanks for the grass and cannas - let me know if there is anything you are looking for to fill a hole here or there (after all there is still some grass I see!)

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, I love that elephant grass!

Is there something I can trade you for some of it?

If there's something I haven't listed that you would like, please ask.
I may have it.

seems like I've planted at least one of everything at one time or another...

Mitch, I'll bring you some red yarrow.
I can't think what I might need/want; I'll "just browse" when I get there!

forgot earlier to list

Zebrina Hollyhock:
These things grow to over 3' tall, hugely wide, & they bloom on & off until a *very* hard frost or until you cut them back to keep them from colonizing your entire garden.
I admire that in a plant.
The blooms are small orchid/pink things with burgundy striations, & they're shaped something like bells.

I got my start from a woman who pulled them up by their roots one August. I thought for sure they were goners: by the time I got them home, they looked like wilted turnip greens.
but they perked up in water, & they haven't looked back since.

& coreopsis. it's has little chrome-yellow flower, & the plant is an evergreen thing that looks sort of like a zinnia, only just about 10" tall.

Paradise, TX(Zone 7b)

I use a power wheelchair and wondered if I would be able to see some of the garden without doing damage. I'm planning on coming if it would be OK.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Aunt Jean, please come on ahead!

One long side of the iris beds adjoins the vacant lot, which is just hard soil with grass, & there are beds along the driveway & across the back yard, which also has a wide grassy area.

All these areas would be easy to navigate.

I went by this morning, & there are buds buds buds everywhere!

Yay!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Sylvia will hold a start for you. Will pick out something when I get there.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Have a pot of Larkspur and fishbone for you Ted.

I don't have many plants right now to trade, but I have some plant stands that someone might be interested in. Here is a link to the thread where I showed them to start with. They will be great for the patio or in the garden too. I like to display houseplants on them also. This will be my first opportunity to trade them, so I still have all of them. If you are interested in a particular one just let me know.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Need some informatiion???
Is there anywhere around there you can buy Vermulite. Looks like everyone stopped selling it around here. Bulk sales if possible. If anyone has some will trade or buy. Thank Ted

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, those are *too cool*!

I love the one with the patterned plate on top.

Please check my list & see if there's something, or several somethings, on it you'd like in exchange.

If not, maybe I can find sump'n else.

I just love those plant stands.

I'm thinking some of them would even make nice cake/dessert stands, wedding presents, prizes, bird feeders...

Ted, Perlite is available at Wal-Mart 8 dry qts for $2.78.
It's late right now, but I'll check other places tomorrow.

If you'd like me to get some for you, please let me know.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It's yours Sylvia. I think you are talking about this one, just so I am sure. As for the items for trade, just whatever you think. I only have about $4 materials in that one. I got carried away and have a lot of stands! LOL! I don't have any of these plants that you listed:
Kwanzo daylilies
Achillea Paprika (red yarrow)
chocolate mint

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Syvlia I want Vermulite not Perlite. Cfan get Perlite everywhere. Thanks anyway.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, Yes! that's the one! I'll bring you a bucket full of Kwanzos & some yarrow & chocolate mint!

Mentioned them to Bobbie, & she's excite to see them!

Aunt Jean, Bobbie saysher mother uses a motorized wheelchair & buzzes all over the gardens.

Ted, I did ask about Vermiculite when I called, & I know there's a difference (never can remember what it is...), but Perlite was all the guy found. Sorry.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Sylvia I must have beat you today in Ovilia!! I was out and about and in the trash to the side of one of the little churches there I saw a plant stand!!! It is old and wooded with loads of carving - some of it broken but it just makes it look more charming! Anyway back to our talk of plant stands made with glass - sorry but once I saw it had to take it and just had to share on here were we are talking about them....

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Found items always a good bargain!! I have some windows most have the panes still in them. I have two of the large 8 pane ones I know for sure and maybe one smaller 6 pane. Anyone want me to bring them to Red Oak in April? No trade needed, they have sit here long enough that DH wants them on the trash heap! Being a crafter type, I just can't stand it, I want someone to have them. I have a pic of one I fixed up in a spare bedroom as wall decor; if I can find it.....Here it is. I plan on using one outside along with an old door too one day. They are in fairly good condition, kept inside the shop (in DH's way)!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I would love them!!! I am on the look for something jsut like that for a gardan room... will take one or all (if some one wants some I can share... )

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I will bring them with me, and drop them by your house on our way home too, if you don't have a way to get them there. My DH will be thrilled to get them out of his shop!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I will find a way! dont worry - thank you sooo much Esther is going to be thrilled I stop hunting for home tear down sites for good windows!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Forgot to mention - I dont do plant stands and I dont do house plants with a 2 year old! So if anyone wants a nice little beat up old church plant stand let me know and it is yours - just had to save it. If no one wants it I am going to take it to the big Texas RU - first offer to those here. I dont need naything back - this is not for trade just if you want it speak up!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I just picked up a pair of metal chairs with no seats or backs. These were garden chairs from the look at some point - wide. Anyway I am going to use one for a trelis but I am offering the other one if anyone wants one. LMK - Mitch

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Mitch I will take it. LOL

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Which one or both? Chair or plant stand? (both are yours if you want them!)

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

The stand.
I just picked up an old washing machine with stand. Now to plant something in it.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Getting your name on it now -

Alright my fab. chair that should be used for a trellis is still up for grabs!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Just bought 100 ft of 1-1/4 black water line to make a floating ring for my pond to keep my floating plants in this summer, so they will not clog up my skimmer filter. Have plenty of it left if anyone wants to make one. Just use a hose bib with some silicon glue to splice and seal.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I have a light house? or stone tower? looking thing with a hole in the top - flat top. Would have several garden uses. Also a white and blue crockware piece - short but deep with wide opening would be great with cacti or such. Chair is still up for grabs .... ..... I know I will find something else just give me time!

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Venessa, it is so nice to see you join in the fun at Dave's Garden. Looking forward to our trip to Bobbi Malon's garden.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

mitch, how big is the stone tower/lighthouse thing?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

oh maybe a foot to foot and half... really cute just does not fit in with the garden.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

This is not the place to put this but I had to share.
https://www.providiancard.com/bap/grd/jump.jsp
The way I use credit cards is only if they pay me in some way.
Never carry over and let them charge me. LOL
Any way got this sprayer which is cordless and 14 volt. Just used it and sprayed a gal of neem spray and it worked great. For free you cannot beat it.
I used the card once and threw it away.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

dug up some chrome yellow coreopsis to share, along with a few antique or historic yellow irises. don't know the variety, but they're early-blooming oldies.

The lamb's ears were sitting directly under an eave.

an eave which does not have a rain gutter.

Since the rain, they're sort of beaten-down & straggly & drowned looking, & most of the soil has been pounded out of the pots.

I'll try again.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Sylvia - my whole yard is a standing lake everything is under water sooo I have no idea what plant wise will live past this. . . but I hope a lots does and will be going fine here in just a few days.. to much rain at once!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We picked last weekend to move the plants that were in the shop for the winter outside. It's also going to freeze Tuesday night!!! The rain was great for ferns, etc.; but the cactus are not liking this over-kill rain. It is either feast or famine around here this last year or two. I emptied the rain gauge this morning around 10am, and I had another 1.3 inches in it by 4pm. We have had about 4" since last night. More is coming tonight; it's lightening off in the west now. I feel for those of you in Dallas and Arlington, looking at the news with all of the flooding of houses and vehicles.
I pulled up a lot more larkspur plants during the breaks in the rain. I let one large purple larkspur shoot up in a bed that is in the middle of my rock area around the pond last year. I faithfully harvested seeds but didn't get them all. I have 50 or 60 plants that sprung up and hate to just pull up and compost them, so I am potting up or moving them to other areas. I will be bringing some with me to the Red Oak iris tour to share.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, all the drainage ditches were brimming last night, & water was *running* across Houston School Road where it intersects with Ovilla Road.

Luckily, although my soil is mushy enough to suck the shoes off my feet if I get off the walkways, hardly any of it is actually under water this time.

Sheila, larkspurs are wonderful!

I had a few last spring/summer; they were so refreshing to look at.

If they re-seed like that, maybe I'll have some again.

(Or maybe I can trade you something for some of yours.)

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Just catching up on this thread, and am so disappointed that I can't make it after all. Must have been brain dead - I have a wedding to go to that day. How could I forget-- I'm making all the dresses!! LOL Please everyone take lots and lots of pictures to share here :-)
