How old does a baby have to be before you can take a leaf cutting from it?
You guys are getting me addicted with all your pictures but I only have my one AV, Fisherman's Paradise, right now to harvest from. If you remember, I'm new to AV's and killed the 1st 4 I had but managed to salvage a couple of leaves from which I got the FP above. I have bought 3 more from Ebay but they haven't come yet and I'm getting itchy fingers. LOL
Jan...
Question on leaf cuttings
I like to take at least one leaf for "insurance" as soon as I think the plant can spare one... If it has more than one or two bigger leaves around the central crown of tiny new leaves, then I figure it can donate!
If you're not sure, post a picture of your baby....
'Fisherman's Paradise' is a gorgeous one! Great choice!!
Take a look at Rob's
http://www.robsviolet.com/violets_by_leaf.htm
I also found some info in a book that I'll try and write up a bit later.
If I take a leaf that I think is pretty little, then I don't cut the top of the leaf off... I figure it's better if it roots and maybe grows a little before making plantlets... may take a little longer, but seems like more of a sure bet.
Oh, cute!! It's growing very nicely for you!
I would say you can take one leaf from it, or even two (maybe one now, another if the first doesn't root). On the left side of your picture, I see two leaves (at about 7 o'clock and 9 o'clock) that are coming out almost directly below two other leaves. I would say you could take a leaf at either place (either the upper or the lower leaf), whichever you think would leave the plant looking the best. From what I can see in the photo, I would probably take the lower leaf that's at about 7 o'clock. If you have a choice between a leaf with lots of variegation and one that's mostly green, the mostly green one will do better as a cutting.
You don't actually have to cut the leaf off. If you gently move it one way and the other, wiggling the stem near its base where it connects to the crown, it should pop away nicely.
Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try.
Jan...
Great plant, Jan!
Thanks
Is it necessary to cut the top half of the leaf off when you set them up?
JesseK
No it is not. Some say babies come faster. Some I do but most I don't. To me it makes no difference.
Allison
I cutt he top off of leaves that are large. I do this so they don't shade the babies..But I agree with Allison..You don't have too....and I have not seen a difference in how fast they pop babies
I think the babies pop a little sooner for me if I cut the top (even just a little off the tip) from the leaf... but I also think that sometimes that cut creates an entry for disease organisms that rot the leaf. So it's something I do, but not every time.
What color are the flowers on 'Fisherman's Paradise?' and have I asked that before...?
Fisherman's Paradise (4843) 06/04/1982 (B. Sisk) Double dark lavender/purple edge. Variegated, pointed, frilled. Large
Do they get more frilly as they mature?
Jan...
I agree with Allison.
Yes the first time I saw it I knew it was Mosaic not FP
But Witch Doctor is gorgeous too :))
There are about 30 standard AVs listed in FC that have mosaic variegation (but don't have pink variegation or red backs... figured I could rule those out). Jan, what was the bloom like on the mother plant?
FP or not, it's a gorgeous little plant!
I thought I had pictures of them but I'm still looking. I bought 4 violets at the same time,
2 had normal green leaves and 4 were variegated. I know for a fact that one was labeled Fisherman;s platter but I can't recall the other 3. I'm almost sure none were named Mosiac.
I'll keep looking for the pictures.
Jan...
No Jan there is no plant named Mosica . Mosica is the kind of foliage patern the plants name is "Witch Doctor "
And maybe you have a missing Fisherman's Paradise ?
Fisherman's Paradise foliage should be Variegated, pointed, frilled. Large
>>>>>>>
The plant named Witch Doctor should have foliage that looks like your plant.
Mosaic variegated dark green and silver
My witch Doctor babies have deep pink ( rose) in their foliage too !
>>>>>
Jill where did the pink and red back come in ?
I knew the minute I saw her plant it was Mosaic foliage.
>>>>>>.
Where did you buy them that may help. If you bought a Fisherman's Paradise and , a Witch Doctor and two other plants . Did you take the name tags off ?
Pink, Mosaic .ruffled red back how about '
B-Man's Irish Red (8657) 07/21/1997 (B. Curcuruto) Semidouble lavender ruffled pansy/darker top petals. Mosaic variegated dark green and pink, heart-shaped, quilted, ruffled/red back. Large
>>>
But no way is that Jan's plant..
I got 33 standards with Mosaic foliage were you ruling out the red backs ? I'm lost.
I have grown Witch doctor and have some babies still and her's looks just like mine .
>>>>>>>
Either way I love Mosaic and your plant is beautiful Jan ! Maybe you can remember the name !
I'm sorry, my syntax was confusing there. Pink variegation and red back were two criteria I used to rule *out* possible names for her plant, LOL... I found 46 standard AVs in FC with mosaic variegation. But 14 of them had either pink color in the variegation and/or red backed foliage, and I knew I could take those off the list of possibilities.... Without knowing anything more about Jan's plant, that left me with 32 possible registered names.
(edited for math error, LOL)

Oh mann your too smart Jill. lol I did a search of standards not all standard. lol
Someone with photo shop laurie can you take the blooms off of Witch Doctor lol it looks just like Jan's plant.
Festive Holiday and Generic Blush popular mosaic plant sold but I've grown them and does not look like it but who knows ?
Maybe Jan will find the names sense she bought 4 plants at the same time !
I agree that Jan's plant looks a lot like 'Witch Doctor'. But there were no photos of most of those 32 from my search, so no way to tell which others might look just like it also. That's why I was asking if Jan knew anything about the blooms....
LOL, sometimes that FC database is really helpful, and other times it just muddies up the water!
Jan, whatever your plant may or may not be named.... it is *gorgeous!*
What is the FC database? Is there a place to go to look up all the AVs?
JesseK
begonia,
What software do you use to edit photos?
JesseK
I use both photoshop and illustrator. (for example, both photos I just posted were done in photoshop, but the photo of Precious with a bow in Ali's thread, I used Illustrator. (I do graphic design among other things for my paycheck)
Jesse, First Class is a software package (searchable database) that you can purchase. There's a link in our new sticky under "software." There's a discount on the price for AVSA members.... :-)
First Class is a program by AVSA that gives pictures and info of thousand African violets !
Laurie your so great ! Looks just like Jan's plant the only difference her's has been grown in natural light :))
I have Lilian Sparkler does not look like her.
Thank you for answering my questions. :)
JesseK
uh oh, I might have to beg a leaf of that, I almost bid on one not long ago. Anything variegated just thrills me.
(pretty please with sugar on top)
(wink wink)
Which one ? I have baby plants Witch Doctor and Lilian Sparkler ?
Well Jan bought 4 plants together she just needs to remember the names...
Now she bought 4 together no wonder she can't find the names.
Maybe tomorrow she will ! The Mystery of Witch Doctor lol will be solved. We do know none of the plants were named Mosaic :))

Lilian Sparkler, it didn't go for much on eBay, but I can't remember if I missed the auction or if there wasn't anything else the seller had to make it worth the shipping. ..oh yea, I remember now, the seller only had a photo of the adult plant and not the actual plant for sale. that just chaps my behind. I wanna know what I'm getting, not a description 'you are bidding on a nice plant' - sure! nice is subjective and in the eye of the beholder.
I'd rather wait 3 months for a leaf of yours to sprout ears than buy a plant sight unseen, even with good feedback. LOL!
I better get to bed, gotta get up early for my drive. It's like an hour and 45 min. to the city from here. nighty nite all!
