Who is beginning to take serious looks at the catalogs now?

Stacy, I think we should invite Cheryl and PGZ5 to our Yard Sail this summer! Tofu for everyone! Shark fins as party favors!

I know PGZ5 can make it because I know how close she is to me but I wonder how close cjolene is over there in Kansas?

Thornton, IL

Hi girls. What's this? I love yard sales. But I need details before I commit to anything.

I am still a little skittish about buying mail order plants, but the foxglove is the big one, and that amsonia is sooo blue. To see what I'm talking about, you need to go to White Flower Farms website, and type in Shady Ladies in their search box, sorry about that.

I will probably end up working at a nursery this summer, I worked at Sid's last year. Or if not working there, definitely buying lots of stuff! My favorite place to go is Woldhuis Farms in Grant Park.

Lauren, you silly billy. You posted a picture of the yellow waxbells in the plant files. Looking at those pics and noticing the form just now, I guess I thought it was a small shrub, which it is not. I have a feeling I'm going to end up with the Oakleaf or Annabelle hydrangeas and possibly the yuccas. I crave structural interest, esp. since it's practically in my front yard! The other plants would be like frosting on the cake. I have Palace Purple heucheras, but they're not as dark as some of the new purple-leaf ones out now, like Chocolate Ruffles, Montrose Ruby or Molly Bush. They would combine well with the ferns, if it's not too shady, then it looks like you *forgot* something. I noticed this same thing when I planted some Midnight Reiter geranium in the hosta garden. I also love pulmonarias, and would love a piece of your Mrs. Moon Stacy! Thank you so much in advance. I have the long leafed Cevennensis, aren't they pretty? Have you all tried Green Spice heucheras or Stoplight heucherellas? Sorry, off on a tangent again!

Looks like I own the plant... duh.

Well, it must have been one of those experiments I tried over here and forgot about. Come over and find it- I dare you. While you're over here, could you locate my brain for me too... it seems to have left me.

He he he- it's a Yard Sail. I forgot where the thread is but you need to come over.

I think I have 'Green Spice' here... somewhere. Man, I feel like I am in the land of OZ sometimes.

Then just click your heels together and say, there's no place like home 3 times. When you start to see talking animals and garden art, and animated scarecrows, lie down in the garden until it passes. LOL

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Hey, I happen to enjoy talking animals and animated scarecrows, thank you very much. ; D

Did I hear you mention a plant sale?? hahaha hmmm...guess I prolly wouldn't be saving much by driving 6-8 hours to get there....

Everyone here seems to be from Illinois...cool...I got married there! There's this little historical town on the Southwestern edge near Keokuk, IA, that we both liked to visit before we met. Doug's really into history and my ancestors used to live there in the 1800s so I feel like I'm learning about their lives when I go. So anyways, that's where we got married. Bet you couldn't care less, but I shared it anyways!

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Lauren - Invite away! The more the merrier.

My computer's acting up, so I can't post the link, but the thread is in Carnivorous, under Welcome To My Basement

Okidokie, I finally got around to starting a thread on the trip to Chicago Botanic Gardens-
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/573075/

Now, who has been out there doing damage with their credit card? My husband calls it surfing while impaired when I have a credit card in hand and am sitting in front of the computer. I placed an order for the Squirrel's Corn at Munchkin's Nursery. I gave up on WhiteFlowerFarm because for some reason their shipping kept totalling up to over $30 for 3 lousy Squirrel Corn Plants. While I was there at Munchkin's, I ordered White Fawn/Trout Lily. I just couldn't pass that up.
I also went and ordered at a few other places. It's going to be hopping here this spring. I love playing in the dirt!

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Oh, Oh Oh, Oh Oh Oh,,,,I NEED that squirrel corn,,,it doesn't give a zone,,,I'll have to do some more checking.

Yes, you most certainly do need that Squirrel Corn. Don't order it from WhitFloer Farm though because the cost of shipping will be more than the plants for some reason. Try here-
www.munchkinnursery.com

They seem to be having site problems right now but if you cut and paste that into your browser, you'll be able to get to their site whenever they work out their burps and hiccups. I bought 3! I needed them.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Eq,
Are they O.K. for my 4a zone? Thanks for the link.

I only read til that plant,,,have to come back in after work and read the rest of the thread,,,just found it today,,,,yeah, like I Really Need to read the rest of it,,,,you enablers you !!!!!!!

Now CBG I can do! I will try to find a ride, if you don't mind meeting someone else too, then you can guess whcih one is me! Mwhahahaha!

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

I just checked and my squirrel corn leaves are up. Have I already missed the flowers? None are in sight.

Thornton, IL

Ahem, what is squirrel corn please?

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

PG,
Here is a link with a pic of SC http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/dicentracana.html

Why PGZ5, it's Dicentra canadensis!
The plant is actually much prettier than the photo at the link below but here's a quick idea-
http://admin.wildflowerfarm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=12790

Say, can you meet with some people over at ChiBo on Saturday May 20th? Everyone's welcome of course but I know you live close and I'd love to meet you PGZ5. And Cheryl..... bet you thought I forgot you. I'd love to meet you too and since you're an out of towner, if you'd like to come you could stay with me at my house with a few other ladies.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

oooo, PG,,,yes, please join us.

Kelly

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

prairie- it's corn made out of squirrels. Very tasty- kinda nutty. ; )

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

lol

Hey Cheryl, KS isn't that far from the Chicagoland area. Any chance you could come up here to go tp ChiBo? And please share this recipe you have for corn made out of squirrels that is kind of nutty!

Thornton, IL

I asked for that.

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Just found this thread. I hadn't heard of Muchkin. Cool plants! It looks like a lot of their plants are in pretty large containers - much bigger than most. Other than one order from Bluestone for plants that I will need one way or the other, I've been holding off on ordering too much. I'm waiting to see how my seed experiment works, for the plant sale at ChiBo, and to see what I lost this winter from the wierd weather. I will be putting in a couple of new beds this year, but I'm not ordering for those just yet.

Can't wait for the ChiBo day!!

Stacy

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

I just did a randmcnally search and found that it's a 9 1/2 hour drive one way. I've got a wee wittle one, too. Sorry ladies, but you'll have to enjoy it without me. Take pictures!

Wee wittle ones are very demanding. We never really were in a position to go anywhere with little ones other than to visit relatives and friends with kids. A 9.5 hour trip in the car would have done me in. But... there's always duct tape ;) Just kidding but I threaten mine with duct taping them to walls and ceilings all the time so I suppose threatening to duct tape them to the top of a car wouldn't have been a stretch.

Stacy baby, pray tell what is your seed experiment?

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

I have to make new beds just to put in what I ordered last year,,,lol,,,,so No ordering for me!!!! Well, other than the 5 hostas I have coming already,,,lol

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Lurker alert! Whoop whoop whoop...

Wow, Munchkin Nursery is just right up the road. And I know Gene Bush; he's a fine fellow with nice plants.

You might call him a shady character....

Eeeek... there's a male amongst us who was lurking! What are you buying from him V V?

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Hi Emasculate:

I am just a staminate version of a dioecious sentient organism.

No orders from Munchkin at this time; I usually see him at enough events that I go overboard with point of purchase impulse buying, that I don't have to pre-order anything.

didn't work Sylvia

Guess you have sunk to our level. Have you read the Gardener’s Creed yet? Being as how you mentioned point of purchase impulse buying and all maybe you better read the Gardener’s Creed.

V V, another new pet name for me! Equivocation, Extirpate, and now Emasculate! What will you come up with next! Me thinks the Vicodin they gave you after your surgery two days ago might be making you slap happy!

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Eq,
Wow,,,how'd you get so many pet names???? LOL

Thornton, IL

VV - Will you be accompanying us pistillate, imperfect organisms? That way there will surely be flowers.

Go easy on him ladies, Mr sweetheart really did just have surgery and I can't imagine he is feeling all that well on day 2.

Lemme see here, you all have called me EQ, Lib, and Equil. My husband and family have a few names for me from when I did a face plant in mud a few years ago so V V is just adding to the terms of endearment! I think he's rather creative myself and I have to admit he's made me crack up laughing a few times.

And ladies, he's coming up north for a visit but unfortunately the timing will be off for the day we are going to ChiBo or I know the "staminate version of a dioecious sentient organism" would have been happy to meet us all in person even if he was the only guy among the lot of us. He's not afraid of other people's wives!

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the link to squirrel corn. LOL

I just placed a nice large order for 3 squirrel corn and 7 different fern plants.

I love ferns. Will plant them in the hosta.

Susan
=^..^=

Thornton, IL

Lauren - What were we talking about again?

Sloooow down. Hee hee.

Hey 9kittymom, I ordered 3 from him too! He's a nice man and has nice healthy plants in one pint pots so that's a lot nicer than most of the plugs we pick up!

Ferns and hostas planted together can have a very dramatic effect! I have a neighbor who did that and it looks great!

Hey PGZ5, I have to admit I forgot what we were talking about but that's ok since we're all over the board now!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Can I sneak into this party or is it over already? LOL Did ya move it?? It just occured to me I have all this wet shade now and I have a lot to learn. I came seardching for then peeping into the shade forum and even added it to my favorites!

Shady Gardening is on your favorites! Well well well... once you go shady... you never go back!

No, the party isn't over. Looks as if it is just beginning if you joined ;)

You might want to look up Green Dragon (Arisaema dracontium). That's one I forgot to mention to you in the past. Seems as if there is a demand for it out there however the plant isn't all that available.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL I'd be glad to revive the party! I have so much to learn with all my new wet shade! I did order a bunch of stuff for wet shade and ordered in larger numbers with the hopes the locals will see my wet shade thriving and want to do something with their barren slosh. ;) Unfortunately the supplier had sold out of Aruncus dioicus. I really wanted that! I had it at my other house but don't remember if I dug it up or not. Hmmm.

I also ordered Dicentra formosa Luxuriant, Ostrich and Regal Ferns, Ligularia Przewalsii and some colorful annuals. Thanks to a generous pal here at DG, I planted lots of hosta and astilbe across the front of the house and around the trees out front. The front of the house and the garage face dead North so I have about a 5 foot deep swath of deep shade most of the time. I also have lots of coleus and impatiens to grow from seed and purchased red and also yellow iresine to punch up the color!

I'll got check out that Green Dragon. As a side note, the stores here are busting with CV now. I saw plenty of VFT and Cobra Lily. :)
