What is stratification?

In the tense that someone says a seed will need stratification before it will germinate?

Thanks Tim. Does it matter how long they are in the fridge? Could they be there all winter or only a few days or does it depend on the seed?

It's important to realize they need a Moist & Cold period. The method you choose is up to you. Probably the easiest is to plant your seeds and store them in flats outside over the winter. You can also plant them, enclose the flat in a baggy and store them in the refrigerator for the chilling period. I like to use the paper towel method and store the seeds in baggies in the fridge. It takes up less space.

How long depends on the plant. Some seeds only need a couple of weeks - and some need several months. Some seeds will need to go through 2 or more growing seasons to germinate. Tom Clothier's seed starting data base is very helpful for looking up seed germination. http://www.anet-chi.com/~manytimes/page52.htm Also check out the seed sowing principles on his page - it has methods of sowing that will be very helpful.

Here is another germination chart, I use it all the time. Of course, now I have to check the above:)
