help mosquitoe invasion!

Hello:

I was just wondering what you do to prevent mosquitoes, where I live they are everywhere and they really make gardening hard and not enjoyable expecially in the summer, I have tried mosquitoe repellent but they still get me. The mosquitoes here are very tiny sometimes you really can't see them but you can definetely feel them, I believe they are called no-seums. I know that they sell those expensive $200.00 and up mosquitoe magnets but I can't afford it plus my yard is not that big so I wouldn't know where to put it.

I would appreciate any input.

We have lots of mosquitos & no-seeums here too. I use mosquito dunks in the bird bath and the big wash tub that our dogs drink out of. You can get the dunks at most garden stores, even Wal-Mart, and they are very safe. They prevent mosquito larvae from maturing. As far as a repellant goes, I just recently discovered "Repel". The active ingredient is lemon eucalyptus and it works better than a lot of the other repellants on the market, and less harmful! This time of year, you'd probably need to look on-line to find any of the stuff, but geez, you can find ANYTHING on-line!! Hope it helps!

I thought everybody in Florida swore by Avon Skin So Soft? I know I went through tons of it on my trips. ;)

not me (skin so soft). it was like mosquito nectar in the keys! you just can't beat Deep Woods Off. it has the most deet. yes, i know, chemicals galore. hey, i don't care. better that than dying from some mosquito born illness. here is a website that i checked out this spring. i don't need it now since we moved, but it looked good at the time. http://www.mosquitofree.com.au/home.asp

I would use a product with deet because it works.Read label and use the minimum amount to ward off those pesky critters! Good luck and Merry Christmas!

I have tried deep woods and even though not as many mosquitoes attack I still get hit, I spray it everywhere but this last summer was horrible and nothing seemed to work, I do agree however about the deet, expecially for the west nile virus, I believe my husband got a mild case of it 2 years ago, fevers, chills etc...
By the way has anybody tried a foger and I was wondering if it would hurt the plants?
Another thing about the deep woods is that it really smells bad so after using it I have to take a shower right away.

we did the fogger, a waste of time and money, but it didn't hurt the plants.

Thank you so much for the info, I know a friend of mine uses the fogger before the kids jump in the pool but I remember that I got bit a couple of times.
I really hope this summer is not as bad as the last.

There is a new Cutter product called Advanced and I have found it to work well. It is supposed to be safer tha Deet. I have never figured out why some folks swear by Skin so Soft, it never worked for me. It is also important to keep your yard clear of all things that might hold water like flower pot saucers. Mosquitos can breed in just a tiny bit of water.
