companion gardening.

Hello, I am pretty new at planting things but really enjoy it.
I have heard about companionship gardening and was wondering if any of you have tried it and if it really works, last year my tomatoes got attacked by the hornworm so I want to be able to prevent it this year. Also companionship planting wont take care of foliage diseases right?
I would appreciate any imput you can give me regarding this subject.

Thanks

There are quite a few threads scattered here and there on DG about this, carmen. Here is one mainly re: "3 sisters".

Here is one that is more toward the overall topic, "companion planting"...

I have planted French marigolds and radishes as a companion without any real evidence it helped. Last year I planted some nasturisums around winter squash and watermelons. It may not keep all the bugs away from squash, but I had a teriffic crop of both and the nasturisums grew up to 6 feet or more across.

I have this book "Carrots Love Tomatoes", and a few people seem to think it is good, going by the Garden Bookworm. Might be a good place to start and not too expensive either. Sorry, can't say that I've tried many of the suggestions, but that's because I don't grow many veggies anymore.

Thank you so much for all your help.
Actually echoes I have seen that book for sale on amazon and you are right it has good reviews in there and also on the garden bookworm, I was contemplating on purchasing it but before I did I wanted to ask around to see whether or not it works. Thanks to the garden bookworm I purchased 100 heirloom tomatoes for the american garden and is now one of my favorites. For what I have seen so far from other forums there is no firm evidence that companionship planting helps with the bug problem, like Indy states in here, so I'll just wait. I just purchased a grow light and men that was expensive, but oh well that is my christmas gift for the year,

Merry Christmas to all and happy planting.

Carmen
