Well it is about 4 minutes until Saturday. Just wanted to let you know that my peaceful Friday did not happen. Just after I posted this morning, DGD called and said they didn't have school, and could she come to my house. Since she was due to be here this weekend anyway, drove 30 miles to pick her up. The roads were icy and took longer to get there. Then we decide to go shopping, to replace shoes that Mr. B. decided to nibble on last time she was here. Then went to Walmart, where she wanted some craft supplies to make some christmas gifts. McDonald's for lunch, then home. She has a cold and we both hit the couches, she the love seat, and me the full size couch. Fixed supper, and she and I worked on mosaic projects that I have going for Christmas presents. Then just before she showers, tells me that she has picked up lice from school, and I will need to comb her hair using the nit combs. Her hair is mid-way down her back, so that takes a long time. Don't know about other parts of the country, but evidently lice in public schools is a problem here. She had it 2 years ago, and had a hard time ridding her of them. As I type, I scratch my head, all mental I know.!!LOL. I asked her if she got them from her "lousy friends", of course 9 year old doesn't get it. Mentally, curse ex DIL for not telling me this. Not that it would have made a difference if she came here or not, but could have warned me that there was extra work involved. DGD is so embarrased, and hopes that she will be able to return to school on Monday. So my day took a sudden detour. No sewing, no finished project, NADA for me!!

Not going to make comments on individual posts, as it would take another 2 hours, and you're not up for it. However, Babs, 101, and others who have commented on my black hole experience, please know that I appreciate your concern. Am beginning to climb slowing out of it, (kids help), and will be back to normal in no time. Not even going to speculate what tomorrow will bring, as plans can change so quickly. DH who was going to be in charge of getting DM to church on Sunday, and DGD home on Sunday, suggested that instead of me driving 3 hours to BIL's mother's funeral on Sunday, that we go tomorrow night for visitation instead. Heaven help me, decisions, and more decisions.

Well, I am off to bed, where I hope that DR will not wake me up, with her yelling. LOL!!

Good night all, hope you stay warm and sleep well, Maria give Samson a big hug from me.

101 You have D-mail.

Lambertville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Hey where is everybody this morning? I've been up since 5:30. Put in a load of laundry and finished baking out the cookies I started yesterday! Sarv, I bet you'd like a warm chocolate chip for breakfast, LOL.

Defoe, I remember having lice go through our high school. What a pain in the butt! Hope you are know that there are lots of hands here to help you from slipping into that black hole.

Going to start wrapping some presents before the crew gets up and moving. See ya in a little bit.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good morning, every one
I was up at that time too, Suzie, but went back to bed for the third time last night, could not sleep very well.

Defoe, I think there is something to settle this problem with a type of shampoo that will get rid of them. My daughter, about 10 years old had hair below her fanny but wore it with one braid came home with them after the school nurse informed me, was I ever shocked , I got reid of them with combing, made an appointment with hair dresser and had her hair cut very short, I thought no need having a pig tail swishing all over the place while in school.

It is a beautiful morning, winter wonderland, will take some pictures. sun is coming up very slowly it takes quite while now as it travels along the horizon before finally showing up in its full glory

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

OKay suzieq you win for most ambitious on a Saturday morning - at least in my book. Although maybe everyone else is busy doing ambitious things too!!

Not me!

defoe ~ I started reading your post thinking how nice, doing crafts with DGD for Christmas! I think I would really enjoy that! Then I hit the lice part. Ouch. My kids got them 7 years ago and I'm still not sure I'm over it. THAT was depressing, big time. All I did was sanitize, bagstuffed animals, hats, bedding, and pick nits. First one, then another kid, then the first one got them back. It ended up a full a week of full time louse fighting, and of course the kids are mortified I had nightmares for months!! I do hope the joy of having your DGD outweighs the troubles.

Ann, you are truly amazing. I love the idea of the Roman Shades, and then using bamboo to boot. Inexpensive, and easily cut to size. I would love lightweight shades for summer. Can't wait to tell my friends this trick!
Sounds like the bell concert was fabulous. congratulations!
And the troubles at the Food Cupboard, with the eggs, what a hassle. It always amazes me in any weather here, who gets through, and who doesn't (often it's a matter of who bothers). Snow shoeing is great exercise. I haven't gone in a couple years now, I think. Last year we had a lot of ice. Exploring the islands sounds like a treat. I love the quiet of the woods ith deep snow, and of course all the animal tracks.

I'm going back to check yesterdays thread and make some coffee. Happy day!!

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi Maria ~ I was posting at the same time. Isn't the sunrise pretty in winter with the snow? IT's still cloudy and gray here.

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

Morning all, Ann, the bells are beautiful thank you for sharing with us.

Susie and Maria I too have been up since 5:30 got to guys off to work and a load folded and one washed and in the dryer.

I am soon off to the last day of our farm and craft market, just to say bye to friends and purchase a few more gifts. Then on to our church to help set up for our Christmas cantata. For the past 17 years we have done a Christmas program with a choir, soloists and lately drama. The community has always responded well to this and after the Sunday night performance we have a light lunch (well maybe it is a nunuch!! as it is after 8 pm) and I am kinda in charge of getting all the food stuffs set up in a pretty way. This year DH is my helper! HELP!! LOL No, really he is a get it done guy and he wont let anyone linger to long he will want to get home! I will post our website with pictures when we get them up.

((((d'cat))))........this can be a tough time of the year BUT please don't let them get you down. I will be praying for you.

Those to the east of me..............keep the snow! We thankfully only got about 2 inches out of the "big" snow we were suppose to get Thursday night.

I must get a picture of my Jade tree and post have had parts of it since 1975. It gets too big and I start a new one, gets too big start.... you get the idea. This start is about 10-15 years old and came from a slip that had gone to Florida and a leaf was sent back to me. Mary loved your pics, and to think you keep your gh going! Envy envy!!

Have a great day

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I got lice in 1944 in Arlington VA where we lived while my dad was at Ft. Leonard Wood . Count your blessings, the *cure* back then was combing, and more combing and.....kerosene!!! It was a plague! My stepmother almost keeled over the first time she spotted one. And she faithfully used the fine tooth comb and didn't cut my hair.

I slept until 7 this morning. Told ya I was pooped! Gonna get busy. See ya later.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Meezer, that was the cure in 1973 when my daughter had it, what a job that was, it took hours with that long hair but she sat there patiently like the wonderful little girl she was and now a lovely woman at 52.
Here are some pictures , first yesterday in the PM

Maria, what happens to the electric fence wire for Samson with more than a foot of snow covering it?

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

The wire is set up so that it will function 10 feet vertically, neat, yes?

Always have to edit typo errors, grrr, if only I could type!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yes, very neat, Maria! (and so is the snow)

Bud is coming over in about an hour to get the rest of my firewood, and I'll follow him back to Andrews. There, he'll help unload my truck of all the pots and garden supplies into my exisitng storage unit.

Then, up to his house to do laundry, shower, and take some time off. I'm invited to stay for the tree trimming party and spend the night but I have too much yet to pack.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning everyone. I, too, was up at 5:30 but it was Pacific Time! So far this morning I have done nothing productive other than sweeping the firewood area because it was empty. Made myself a cup of tea, checked the horses when it was light enough to see them through the kitchen window, cuddled the kitty and sat here reading. My DH built the fire this morning and carried in some wood and is now sitting with his cup of coffee reading. He liked the 14 cents each books I got him, has already finished both of them. He doesn't speed read, just skims over a lot of the extra, wordy stuff that takes up space and adds little to the story. Makes me think of the cop who kept telling his interviewees "just the facts, Ma'am, just the facts". Was his name Joe Friday?

Maria, the snow on the trees is just beautiful. I have to drive a few miles toward the mountains to get that Christmas card effect, we have no evergreens near us.

Ugh, lice. Something that I have never had to deal with, thank the Lord. I do remember friends dealing with it with something called Rid-ex or some similiar name, washing the kids' hair every evening before bed, washing bedding, combs, hats, clothes. It only takes one infected kid and spreads fast. One family got rid of it about 3 times and then one of the kids would borrow a stocking cap or use a friends hairbrush at school and start the whole thing over. It went on all winter and through every school in the area. Some families had kids in 2 or 3 schools. Besides the disgusting part and all the extra work involved, getting the kids to think is the real challenge.

Well, here it is a bit later, my DH is heading for town to investigate an armed robbery in our quiet little town of about 9000. I need to call our son and DIL in about an hour to postpone our family breakfast until tomorrow morning.

Our temperature is about 0 this morning again. Yesterday's high was 20 with sun all day. The greenhouse got up to about 75. I have the furnace set on the lowest setting so overnight it only gets down to about 50-55 unless we are having a blizzard. My remote thermometer got down to 45 once when it was -15 outside with a howling wind and blowing snow. If the power goes out the fans quit but the furnace has a pilot light so it keeps going.

My big jade started as a 3 inch cutting in 1982. I did some trimming on it sometime in the first 5 years or so and planted the trimmed pieces in the same pot so now there are about 6 trunks. Last year the older one started blooming, this year the whole thing is. Here is a closeup of the bloom from last winter.

Have a good day everyone, count your blessings.

It's beginning to snow here now and it's pretty gray outside. They tell me the temp is a bit warmer today...that's good.

HELLO to ALL!

Just trying to peek in and let y'all know I'm still alive.

Darius, I'm really getting excited for you now...it's getting SO close!! (((~Hugs~)))

I'm off again!

What a bunch of gabbers you all are!! (how many times have we all heard this!!) LOL

Well, we (meaning I) drove 72 miles one way to a birthday party for my son's friend. Did I ever tell ya that I HATE to drive at night??? Well, I made it, but it was not pleasant. We took DS/DIL with us. I asked DH if he would drive home and he said "^%$# I wanted to drink a few beers up there!) Well, I drove home too (catch my meaning...) We did have a fun time tho and I would do it again.... I made a new recipe for mexican roll ups and they were wonderful!!! I finished them off for breakfast....along with a yogurt!

I"m sitting here trying to decide what to do today. I need to do some shopping, but the crowds will be awful I think. Hmmm decisions...decisions...

Maria- we had 10 inches yesterday - pretty if you didn't have to drive in it!! Supposed to get more tonight.

LICE - I've never personally had them, but saw them yearly when teaching. Believe me - they are not particular who they live with and getting rid of them is a long drawn out process. The school I was at finally got individual lockers for each child - they are so easily passed this time of the year thru headgear. Vaccuum, dump the bag, wash bedding etc in the hottest water you can and diligently comb with one of those nit combs. You could often identify girls who happened to get them because they suddenly had short hair!! Use the shampoo - info from Dr. Sue. LOL

I made roman shades once - sewed a zillion of those little white circle things on. They did work well, but our windows sweated when I used them. Ours had a tin foil looking backing that reflected the heat.

Well, need to get dressed - it's almost noon and I am still in my pj's. Did someone say they had choco chip cookies???? Give me a couple please...

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

MaryE that jade is beautiful. I've killed a few before I finally gave up. Can't stay long. Jam on the boil...

(Zone 8b)

Morning all,
The temp here is back above freezing this morning and my Martha Gonzales rose has perked back up and opened some more buds - I'm amazed. After hitting 13F overnight and an ice storm I thought she would be done for the season.

Its my DDs birthday today, my middle one, she is 38. Gosh that makes me feel old!

Ann I'm glad the concert went OK, the bells sounded lovely and really seaonal, not like the bell ringers in shop doorways at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Lice - Ugh!! But... they seem to be a normal part of childhood. When mine got them the "Nit Nurse" told me she often found them in the children with cleanest hair - apparantly they don't like dirty hair, and 90% of the school would have them at some time or other. My head is now itching in sympathy!!!

I have put a chicken and mushroom casserole in the crock pot for supper and am off to do the stuff the ice stopped me getting to. The phone in the kitchen was getting red hot - litterally, so I had to unplug it to prevent a fire! Well rushing into the bedroom or the office to answer when you have your hands covered in flour isn't funny so I need to get a new one for the kitchen.

I've never even read many of these thread so I am a newcomer here. But I have been on DG for a few years. Is this the replacement for the chat rooms that I never seemed to be able to remember to get to?

My close friend had grandchildren with head lice almost constantly because the school were having a lot of problems with them. Worse yet, many parents refused to admit that they had them too. So the poor children were exposed constantly no matter what was done to them to get rid of the lice. She would use Miracle Whip, Mayo, salad oils, etc. to smother the lice and loosen them from the scalp and hair. It worked as well as the RidX which is a strong & dangerous chemical product much like kerosene. Used too often and it can cause brain damage among other problems. One more good reason to homeschool. No or limited exposure, no problem. LOL

We still have some light snow cover on the ground from what we got a few days ago. Where the sun has hit the roads tho they are clear.
It is still very cold outside. We have a few chickens with frost bit combs.

I think I will try to remove some dust from furniture today. Not one of my favorite tasks, but it needs to be done before the children begin to arrive for the Christmas get togethers. We will have at least 2 different Christmas days here. One daughter refuses to come when one son is here, etc. It takes some of the pleasure out of family get togethers. We always have to do everything twice.

GOD bless and keep each of you. Remember those less fortunate that all of us. There are thousands just in this nation who are homeless, jobless, hungry, need medical care they cannot get for one reason or another, etc.

(Zone 8b)

Hi Leaflady and welcome to the cyber kitchen!
No we don't replace Chat - we just chat at a slower pace here!! LOL We are GOBs, or GOBettes, that is Glorious Old Broads/Boys and GOBs in training. GOBs are generally over 50 those in training are somewhat younger. It has been suggested (unkindly ) that gabby old bags might be equally appropriate!!!!LOL
We chat about the ups and downs of everday life and share our joys and sorrows. There is always a shoulder to cry on and a helping hand when you are low and a party to celebrate the successes and joys. There are usually cyber goodies to share on the counter and the coffee is always fresh. Pull up a chair and join in!

Yes I know I said I was on my way out - just waiting for the DD with the birthday to get back in so I can sing to her. As she is in the UK the time difference is a pain. Not sure she will enjoy my rendition of Happy Birthday - they usually groan and its probably why she has the answer phone off, but I'm going to do it anyway!! LOL

Well just checking in before I head out the door for the 3 hour trip to DS. Originally was planning on going to funeral tomorrow afternoon, but DH wanted to go today. So 2 days in a row of changing plans, tomorrow, I will not plan, just let it happen? Always seems to go well anyway.

Everybody has been busy, I had to dash out this morning and find someone to cut my hair, or go get a dog tag. Fortunately, have a neice a beautician about 10 miles away. Went, she took me, and whispered that the lady sitting there had an appointment!! I didn't. Anyway, bless her heart she got me presentable. Well it will be night when I get back, so keep it short,so I don't have to read 2 hours later.

Welcome leaflady. DH has family that doesn't get along and it can make for some stressful Holiday get togethers.

Mary E - what a pretty jade plant. I didn't know that they flowered. I had one for about 6 months. DGS decided to un-pot it. LOL

The laundry monster has reared its ugly head today. I think its breeding. Anyone know how to neuter a laundry monster? LOL

Need to find some lunch for these guys. DGS wants hot dogs, so I need to go see if there are any in the freezer.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Kerosene=Brain damage. That explains a lot about me..

Welcome leaflady, we chat just about every day about anything and everything, so just jump in anywhere. Tell us about you, and share your daily trials, tribulations, and triumphs and we'll be happy to listen.

Maria, at least Samson's having fun in the snow! Unlike some others I could mention......

Jam's done, dishwasher's full, and butter getting to room temp on the counter. Making strawberry jam this afternoon, and cabbage rolls for dinner. Haven't decided what kind of cookies, but they all need butter. Maybe some thumbprints with raspberry filling? Who had the chicken enchiladas? Any left? Those are one of my favorites. Out of my hundreds of favorites.........LOL

Jam jar on the far left is for immediate use, help yourselves, English Muffin bread on the right out of the picture.

Back to work.

Hey where did my picture go????

Thumbnail by meezersfive

Hi all
Got up and at it early this morning ... well early for a Saturday anyway. LOL Neighbor called and wanted to go get a Christmas tree, and since we have a truck ... we took him to pick one out along with lights, etc. It's so much fun to help others spend their money. LOL This is the neighbor that has been a God send to the DH and me through the years, so it's especially nice when you can do something in return.

M5 that jam sure sounds wonderful ... and so do those cookies. I'll just help myself if I may.

Oh please, don't mention chicken enchilatas! Now those are my fav mexican in the entire world. Well, they run a close race with the ChimmiChonga. (can't spell, so you figure it out. LOL)

Defoe, you're right about not planning things out. I found that if you just let it happen ... it will work itself out in the long run. The best made plans always seem to go astray for me, at least. Am thinking about y'all today. Stay safe out there on the road.

Leaflady, so glad you stopped in. Please pull up a chair and join in the fun. We have a couple of guys that are very amusing ... however, I'm beginning to think we've scared them off with some of our gabbiness. LOL

To all those I've missed speaking to, it's not intended as a slight. Just didn't try to make notes on everything. Y'all have a blessed week-end. Oh, there's still some corn chowder left from yesterday if anyone's a mind to have a bowl.
Hugs&blessings ... Elaine

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I think Ernie and Robert are not scared about anything or anyone, right guys???
Meezer did you freeze strawberries? Helping my self to yum jam and bread, thanks.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Yes Maria, when the strawberries were plentiful and fresh I stocked the freezer. The raspberries came from my neighbor across the road, whose mail we watch and take in when they are gone away. I still have lots of wild blackberries, but they have a lot of seeds and I'll need to make jelly from them rather than jam. Which means straining through a jelly bag...which is why I'm not using them today!!!
It makes a bigger mess. And I'm out of jars, which means my kids aren't returning them as instructed. I used to hang notes on things they borrowed, "Return this to your mother"!

M5, I'll take some of the blackberries. LOL My Grandma use to make the *best* blackberry pies. Granddaddy didn't like all those seeds as he said they got in his dentures. So she'd cook them down, strain like you're talking about and make very thin pie dough and strip it like southern dumplings. She'd fry them up and pour that yummy blackberry sauce over those crispy strips with homemade vanilla ice cream if you wanted. Now me, I didn't want that ice cream. Just wanted that warm pie. Has anyone ever had it made like that? Oh my, the memories. :)

Just a quikkie to say "Hi". Welcome leaflady. Know you from weight-loss challenge. Not so sure that the two threads are really compatible. LOL Well, maybe as long as those treats are kept cybertreats.

Have had a busy day so far. And am about to take time to color my hair. haven't done so since September and it shows. fortunately, it's a blonde color; so I can get away with waiting better than many.

I talked too much yesterday.; so I'll quit for now. Have a good day everyone.

Ann

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Ann, you did not talk too much, everything you have to say and show is most interesting

Well, I agree with Maria, Ann. You always keep me on the edge of my chair with your posts. :) In fact, I always enjoy hearing about you, too, Maria. I get a real kick out of you and Samson. Mary always has the best discriptions of a world completely different from my own ... Kelly has that glowing personality that makes her *perfect* to be your butician. LOL I was telling the DH today how neat it was that the computer breaks down all the barriers. You make friends for friendship sake. :)
Hugs to all

Think it's fixed. Something goofy with the modem or service or something. Guess I was crossing my toes wrong. For the last couple days I could only get on line 'accidently'. Most of the time the 'puter wouldn't recognize notink.
Comcast fixed it, I think. I messed up and got off the "watch thread" too. Whata dunce. Sunshiny day today but still cold. Went to Sons of Norway lodge this morning for Swedish Pancakes. All you can eat for $6.00. Start out with 3 pancakes, slice of ham, orange juice, coffee and strawberries. I could only eat 5 this time. DW just left for the Christmas play and dessert at DIL's church. They have a nice stage play then serve desserts, coffee and tea. Nice program. I've missed out on so much of late, but boy that Jam looks good Meezer, that's a fine looking Jade plant Mary, andMaria I really like your pictures. Went to the Outlet Mall on the Res yesterday and bought DS a set of Calphalon pans. Got myself a Cuisinart coffee grinder, my Christmas present. Not too cool grinding spices and then going to coffee beans. Clove or rosemary coffee isn't my favorite blend. Sending in my first seed order today, a comparatively small one of only 9 varieties this time. Still haven't figured out how to remove the weeping crabapple in front yet. It is starting to encroach on the neighbors driveway and is only about 4 years old. Time for lunch and back to whittling.

Thumbnail by balvenie
Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Robert about grinding coffee and spices or herbs with the same grinder, I think that is not cool either, usd my grinder for other things not intended for but have since not used it for coffee, now I should do the same thing as you did, get a new coffee grinder. That breakafast sounded great, think I could only eat 2 pancakes at the most but strawberries ? Yes, Yes lots of them for me.

Now Ernie, your turn! Have you been thinking about spring and what you are going to plant or not plant? I bet you are!

Clove or rosemary coffee isn't my favorite blend.

LOL, Robert!

Took some time off today to spend with Bud (a very long time friend) and while at his house managed to get 2 loads of laundry done so I have clean clothes, Whooopeee!!!. Plus, he helped me unload my tiny pick-up truck of garden pots, etc. into storage! (AND, I got his special Bloody Mary to boot.)

Life will be fine if I just make it through the next 24 hours prepatory to the movers coming Monday morning, and then the 2+ day drive to FL!

YEE HAW - Darius - it's gettin' close and I'm so happy for you!

Yes all - I've been grossly remiss in my attentions to DG in the past few weeks - too many reasons to explain - but hopefully I'll get back in the swing of things. I've missed a lot I know so I'm sorry if I don't speak to everyone.

Just have some news - FINALLY - after a long and drawn out process - we got the window replaced in our kitchen yesterday! YEA! The seal between the glass panes had broken causing condesation and fog. Found out from the guys that put the new one in - the window was installed on it's side - no weep holes at the bottom to let out water - so that probably has something to do with it. These guys did it right - and completely caulked around the window, frame - everywhere they could find something to plug. They also did the same around my other big kitchen window - to hopefully keep it from failing as well. Anyway - it's done and now I can see out the window again! So happy! It's the little things....tee hee.

Pampered myself today with getting my hair done - always a truly lovely time because I get along so well with my stylist. Does look lovely even if I say so myself.

No other real news - cold here - no snow - and just in case anyone's looking for them - the Griswolds live on our corner. They have every conceivable lighted blow up thing and animated things and just lights everywhere - I'm waiting for the power to go out LOL!

Have a good night all - and blessed day tomorrow.

Marcia
