Plants for zone 6 Tennessee

Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

I just moved from Louisiana to Cookeville TN. I had to leave all of my plants behind. Would someone please tell me what kind of plants do well in this zone and if there is anything that I can plant now. If you have any that you can send for postage or for daylily seeds please let me know.

Thanks
Betty

Hi Betty,
How are things going? How is zone 6a living...? cold yet?
We were in KY last week, man oh man..was it COLD! Looks like once again we'll be neighbors. I'll be watching this thread to see what can grow!

Wishing you well wishes.

Hi Lisa,

Good to hear from you! It is cold here but not as bad because its not humid. How close are you to the Tennessee border? We are renting and its driving me crazy not to have plants. I just coud not fit another thing in the U Haul. I did take a few of my house plants. There are 2 apple trees but of course no leaves. I did find out Helebore grows well here in the winter. Keep in touch.

Hi Betty! Tennessee?? I remember you asking for advice on moving Lotus but I had no idea you were moving that far! Do you mean you are renting a home right now? Will you be looking for something to buy (not trying to be nosy, just asking about permanent housing)?

I've only ever gardened in zone 6. :) You'll be amazed with all the things you can grow! If you can dig a hole, you can still plant bulbs. Lilies, Crocus, Fritillaria, Hyacinths, Muscari, etc all do well in this zone. As far as perennials, you can still have your Hems, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Spirea, Coreopsis, hardy Hibiscus, Lobelia, Hosta, Asclepias incarnata, Eupatorium, Salvia, Asters, Ferns, Iris, Solidago, mints, Arum, Eremurus and on and on. Many of the ornamental grasses are great here! I still grow brugs, banana, cannas and elephant ears and just bring them in for the winter.

If you have beds or plant flats ready, read any info on the winter sowing. There are many types of seeds you can broadcast or sow in place and have them sprout when spring rolls around. Now would be a perfect time for poppies and I always forget that! LOL

If you have more specific questions, ask away. I in no way can list everything you can grow here and I am sure others will come along. I hope you like your new digs. I've always love TN!

Betty,
We will be pretty close to the TN border. Perhaps the same distance from us as you were here in Louisiana. I love Crossville, so I know I'll be visiting there! I just love the Cumberland Gen. Store that is in Crossville. Also, there is Roadrunners son and dil living there. Lots of things to do and see!

Found this list of shade plants fo your zone http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hrdzon4.html#6
Here is the zone map - you can see that all of TN is not in zone 6.

You can look up any plant on DG or Google to fine it's hardiness zone. hope this helps.

Thank you Azalea. I've never had much shade so I have lots to learn about shade gardening. ;) I have a shade bed across the whole front of my new house, about 60 feet long(dry shade) and also plan to put one across the front of the garage which is around 40 feet long (wet shade).

Thanks for the info Badseed and Azalea! We will be renting for a year or so then we are hoping to buy. I was unable to take any of the lotus I dug up but I do have some lotus seeds that I am going to try to start.

Lisa let me know when you get to KY. Maybe we can meet somewere.

Thanks All

Want a house in Cincinnati, in the same zone? LOL

I may be able to help you with N. lutea right after the snow melts. I have another one that is named as well. Right now they are in buckets of ice and water. :)
