Show me your favorite NOID...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think my "purple thumbprint noid" might be the same one as Lorry's! How cool is that!?

The color came out true on this picture (for a change -- blue/purple is tricky for my camera).... a strong, true violet like a wood violet brightened with a white thumbprint.

Would you look at that. They look the same to me.

Thanks, MK. There isn't any chance that one of those pictures could be of this Cheagle creature?

Kenton

(Hey everyone: I just want to scream an uncharacteristic YIIIIIIIPPPPEEEEE, as I have just finished [one minute ago] my term paper to complete this semester! I can smell the compost that I will turn during my Winter Break already!!! And more quality time with my Saintpaulia!)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

The color seems a LIL different but not by much :)
It sure does look alike Miss Critter :) Very cool :)

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

Off to photograph Ernie, the Cheagle. =) And, Kenton--went to your page.......you're a hoot! I'm a '70er myself.....lots older than your '86 [must be nice].....congrats on your term paper, and your backyard looks wonderful!

MKJ

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Congratulations, Kenton!!! I sure remember that feeling.... Doin' the Snoopy Dance for you now! :-)

Lorry, I bet any color difference is just in the photo... the leaves look really similar too, and that's the clincher.

What fun, to think the same noid popped up in MD & FL!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL it is cool Critter :) Who would have thought.
Most of my Noids come from the same nursery *the one my husband hates letting me go to :)*

Silver Spring, MD

They both look similar to the Opitmira Pallet Series. Check this out. Same features, just a different color.

They sure do :)

Kenton, what are you studying? Gee whiz '86 is when I graduated... feeling every bit my age now....

Here are my girls all cuddled up on their bed. I know it's off topic but we do have a bit of a noid-pet discussion going on.

Oh, what fabulous faces!! I just want to curl up right in the middle of their puppy pile!

Which Optimara is that, Nanna? You're right -- the thumbprint marking, flower form, and leaves all look just like my "purple thumbprint noid." Cool!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Nope, they are all 100% naughty bassets.

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

You mean, those guys wake up to be naughty?? lol

Precious is just THAT! =)

Denver, CO

Perhaps this is a rare occasion: the identification of a noid. The color differenece is hard to acertain with a camera... I wonder if Allison of Keyring would recognise a particular cultivar. Nanna, It sure seems like a thumbprint.

Ernie is certainly not the demure thing I figured he'd be, he looks intrepid. Lucy is 'a doll.' Thanks for the compliments, MKJ. The term paper was about S.T. Coleridge (a giddy and capricious poet). I'm an art major (because it's easy, free education right now) but I am going to be a freelance fulltime Master Gardener. -with an studio art degree. There is quite a demand in my valley for anyone who knows a snuff about gardening, as misinformed "gardener"/"landscapers" can get $30 an hour to goof up your yard.

I have been trying to get a good picture of my neighbor and his three bassets. Every once in a while while walking from the park, He will be wallking in front with each one single file behind him. He doesn't feel that he owes any appeasement to the darned world, but he'll do anything for those dogs.

love that cool sweater, Allison!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

MKJ, key word it when they wake up, I think they sleep about 22 hours a day. When they are not sleeping, they are begging for food. Doesn't matter what kind of food, they just think they need it. Talk about obsessive compulsive. Amber (who was extremely abused at her first home) is very food obsessive. So much so that she ate my chapstick yesterday, smelled like pina colada. She eats anything and everything and then acts like she is famished. Her first owners apparently were complete idiots they bred her to death and starved her. Since she was from a puppymill http://stoppuppymills.org/ we believe she had two litters a year before she was even 4. She was confined to a kennel with other dogs and they just threw them food when it occurred to them. (special place in HE double L for folks like that). Anyway I think that's why she is so concerned about food, she grew up not knowing if she was getting another meal.
All my gals are rescues from a basset rescue organization. All came with certain 'issues'.
But like your neighbor Kenton, there isn't anything I wont do for my babies. DH complains that the dogs eat better than we do! LOL

Denver, CO

I have some friends that pick up reservation dogs/cats any time they go to Shiprock and there is an empty kennel at the humane society here. I've house sitted (specialty) because their dogs have issues. The res mutt is an incredibly intelligent food-er: She once stole my dinner, stashed it (without messying the upholstry under which it was put), gave the napkin to another dog to play with, and sat back where she was before I turned my back! It took me a minute to figure it out, after I'd already admonished the innocent dog!
And yet how someone would mistreat such a creature escapes me...

Amber looks awfully good today, eh?
Say, what is the function of that 'give this dog a bone' thing? I did it for your dogs a few days ago, and now I'm curious.
Kenton

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't know what that is, it's kind of like brownie buttons I guess. They go away after a week or so. I suppose for folks who like to follow that kind of stuff they like to know how many bones they get. I guess it just means someone likes your dog? Do a search for the most popular dog, it's kind of funny how 'in to' it some pet owners are. Kind of like our plant obsessions.

For those who have no idea what we are talking about, you have to visit the Dogster.com site and view indivual dogs. ( I think Kenton listed my Hooligan's link above)

Denver, CO

That is odd. Some kind of peculiar competition. I hoped thatf you were obliged to convert your dog's internet cookie into a real one.

What does it mean when your dog (but not you) has his own web page?
{On the "fllip" side, a child's mother dies of AIDS in Ghana...}

About the Thumb Print. I think mine is DeVinci and the other two or is it three are Michaelangelo or Monet.

Check them out of the Optimara fieldguide

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, I can't help myself.........have to jump in, Kenton & Crazii! lol I'm a huge rescue fan--my cat & two dogs are all such. Lilliput (the cat) was housed with the dogs at a local shelter after her owner found out enroute to Croatia that they wouldn't let in foreign animals. Had to leave her @ the shelter during a layover. So torn up they couldn't quite tell me what he said through sobs. Had to bring Lilli home.....one of those girls-stick-together things. =)

Ernie was of a litter dumped by the people who didn't think their Chihuahua would try to breed their Beagle. Helllllo?! He's a doll.

Lucy was bought by a guy who decided to go into the breeding business. She was chained, and a neighbor (who placed her w/me) fed her & gave her vet care. When Lucy would escape, she got into alot of beating trouble, bless her heart. Even now, she's wary of men. The guy tried to dock her tail in a door, and when the broken end became infected, he finally took her to the vet, who confiscated her. I was the lucky chick who got her through the rescue program, at her tender age of 7 months. She's an angel.

=) MKJ

p.s. Although, they don't have their own websites.....lol.......

Like I said MKJ, special place in H E double L for folks like that. I could get on my soap box about back yard breeders & puppy mills (Amish country being the worst) but I don't think this is the place for it. Perhaps I'll spout off in the pet section another day.

When Miss Sophia came to us at 7 months she had several issues. Bassets need their ears cleaned regularly since they don't point up like shorter eared dogs and can get infected much easier than other dogs. When I would come to her with a wash rag, she would cower and urinate out of fear - run and hide under the table or get away from me as fast as she could. I couldn't figure it out, what was the problem. So I contacted the rescue http://www.bassethoundranch.org/ and they gave me a trick to try. First I got cubed cooked chicken (remember that unlike some other dogs, bassets are motivated by food, not so much praise like a lab or others) and got her attention, then I placed the chicken in the wash rag and repeated this process (hide the cookie in the wash rag) every day - several times a day- for a week, until she got past it. It became 'Wash rags are good, they have cookies inside them' kind of thought process and conditioning. I haven't found a way to do the same thing with her leash. When she hears the jingle of the collar/leash, she freaks out. I think the sonuvagun who had her either beat her severely or hung her by it. This is an outgoing goofy friendly dog but when her leash comes out, it's like a totally different dog. She cowers and hides, and then when the collar/leash go on, she freezes and cant move. I hate to do it, but last week I had to take her to the vet for a cyst on her shoulder (turned out to be benign Pilomatrixoma) but the only way to transport her is with a leash.

Any pet experts out there with suggestions let me know.

MsCritter, sorry to bogart your thread with pet talk. Don't mean to get so far OT.

So funny, I was getting ready to un hook my computer from my office to take it into the house and 'digest' your list. (have to go and look at all the photos, then have pen and paper handy to make the list)

Not sure how far you are from Miami, but like I told Ali, I'm going to be there in March. If you are near enough, let's try and hook up.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Begonia I'm about a 4 hour drive. I think Lorry is closer :((. Are you driving down ? Allison

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I am about 3..sure would LOVE to see ya :)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

i'll fly into Miami, then do some tours etc. Planning on staying an extra day or 10 (only kidding) and then ship my goodies home priority mail and hope to beat them home.
Starts March 1-5 (more info here http://members.tripod.com/~PalmHammockOrchidEst/phoe.html)

But being in nursery/grower heaven, there's no way I could just go only to the event and not toodle around for a few days and drool on the local plant material! LOL

maybe I'll get you all hooked on begonias too!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh I love Bgonias . I only have a few really cool ones . I will get mor but I'm sure a lot will grow outside. Allison
