Found this:
A cowlick is simply a shock of hair which looks as if the big, wet tongue of a cow has licked it. It grows in a different direction from the rest of the hair around it, so that it might look as though it is sticking up or out. The term dates from the late 16th century, when R. Haydocke used it in his translation of Lomazzo: "The lockes or plaine feakes of haire called cow-lickes, are made turning vpwards." A feake, by the way, is a "dangling curl of hair".

Having seen a fair number of cows in our lives, we have to wonder if the term arose because some varieties of cattle have rather scruffy coats, looking as if they are, themselves, covered in cowlicks, which people may have thought were caused by the cow licking its fur.

There is also the less-heard term calf-lick, which has the same meaning as cowlick.

This morning, I finally gathered enough courage to let him run without the leash but the special collar for the fence. Poor Samsom went bananas to be able to run like a maniac witout being leashed, I could see how much he needed that exercise

Maria,
Are you talking about the invisible fence?

I have one for Archie. It broke a few months ago and he did not know the difference until yesterday. That !@#$ took off on me and headed right for a main street. I must have been quite a site running, screaming and crying after the little brat. He finally got tired and headed for home. If I could have caught him I would have strangled him. He knows I can't catch him too.

So Daddy is out there now trying to find the breaks. One side is done, now the other side where the gardeners hacked up is a little bit more work.

Hap

PS Sampson is very handsome.

Yes, Hap, am talking about the invisible fence, I just had it put in, boy, is that expensive! Hope it does not break I could never out run him nor hold unto him He is BIG. He very active, have to remember he is only 11 ms old
Probably the gardeners broke it?

My MIL lived across the street in the old farm house where she grew up, it was given to us when we were married. She was a a wonderfu part of nurtering our children too, She made certain the 2 girls and 2 boys learned proper manners, especially the girls, MIL was a true victorian lady, very gracious but also loads of fun. Today the girls still set a table that is wonderful to behold with loads of family sterling from as far back as the 17 hundreds, I passed it on to them, I had too much of everything, too much for one person to clean, who needs 3 tea services and and services to serve a hundred people, I don't.! Besides I have my own, it is called 'Vienna" lol
Am very busy with Samson trying to teach him manners lol but he does not listen most of the time, just like a male of any species, just awful, yes??

I just wanted to pop in and say, I like the way you guys are continuing the conversation in previous threads...that is exactly what I'd hope would happen. It gives us all a feeling of freedom when we can go back and read a thread and be able to 'catch up' on things we want to talk about.

Maria...Samson is looking super! Glad he's proving himself a good companion for you.

Maria, my mom taught my daughter how to set a table and serve tea also. The first time she did it for us was for mine and DH's 10 anniversary. She had been practicing to suprise us. Boy were we ever surprised...

Speak for your self Happy. Ernie

Mary I spent three summers in SouthEast Alaska what a place to fish. I was in Excursion Inlet just off Icy Straights one inlet over from Glaicer Bay.

This ferry is being built for the Inner Island Ferry Assn and is the Stakine seems it is 183 feet so just a baby of a ferry but must work well because we built the first one in 2001 it is called the Prince Of Wales named after the Island.and this one is a carbon copy. It will be launched Jan 21 and delivered to the owners late march which means june lol. It is my understandind that these boats are to be a link for travel within the islands not served by the Alaska ferry system. Before these boats some of those people had to fly in and out and rely on bardge service to move vehicles and supplies this gives them a different option. They have lots of seating that is plush for the foot passengers. Ernie

Ah yes, Ernie, there are lots of places where the Alaska Ferry system doesn't go, smaller islands with just one community, places like Cape Pole on an island off the west coast of Prince of Wales, or Port Alice on Hecata Island, where the only way to get supplies in is by barge once every couple of weeks or by air which is limited by the small size of the planes and the weather. It's quite a place, and never will be totally tamed, which means you will always have a job building boats for them. I'll have to see if I can find any more info from the Inner Island Ferry Assn. Thanks.
