Flowering Tobacco

Sultan, WA(Zone 8a)

I want to stick this in next to my front porch. My house faces east, so it will only get am sun and then shade in the afternoon and evening. Do you think it will thrive?

Thanks!

Hi Arrianne... I have a couple of varieties, and either would do well for you, think. This one is very fragrant in the evenings (I live on the northern coast of California.) I think it is called "Sensation". Not a great picture, but gives you an idea. Seeds are very harvestable too.

And this one is not as fragrant, but I like the cottage-garden look to it. The flowers are more bell-like and "airy". I think I may have enough seeds I've collected I could share with you if you'd like. (I think this is "nicotiana mutabilis".)

Thanks for posting that. Are both locations in full sun? What time of year are were those pictures taken?

Just now noticed your post~ the second picture shows a volunteer, actually, in a small container. Both plants are in fairly full sun, but our average summer temperature is only the mid-60's!! These two pictures were taken in September or so, if I remember correctly. And, the second variety where I live is nearly perennial ~ It's still in bloom right now, with another flush of new growth coming froms its base. The hummingbirds like this second variety too.

By the way, I checked the map of Washington to see where you are ~ my brother lives in Camano Island, and last time I visited we went as far as Monroe.... didn't look like too far from you. I love Washington, at least the parts I've seen.

Renwings, Flowering Tobacco will bloom in partial sun, like an eastern exposure, I've had some volunteers bloom in the shade.
They come in a wide variety of heights but not all are fragrant.
I had a problem with little yellow and black Potato? beetles attack them in full sun.
