Brugmansia sanguinea cutting or seed

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Does anyone have a cutting or seed available for postage? I would like to try this one now that I have a brug nursery started (ie propagation station).
I have no idea how to start brug seeds, but I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks so much!

I only have seedlings now going of sang crosses. But let me warn you, sangs are hard to root. It took me 2 years of trying to perfect my method to get rooted ones. This is one you may want to grow from seed. I have seen lots of them around this month in 5 gallon cans. Beautiful leaved ones too. Or if you do not get one, Annie Annuals sells fat babies in 4 inch pots for $3.95. I am not sure when in her season. She has a website too.

I saw some beauties at a local garden center but couldnt bring myself to fork over 35 bucks just yet. I'm still too much of a neophyte for that kinda dough. Now I'd fork over 35 for a begonia and not bat an eyelash, but thats a whole other story

How are they from seed? off hand do you know a good like here on DG for starting brug seeds. I'll pay the 3.00 on eBay for them and give it a go if needed.

What do you cross them with?
Thanks for your help Kell!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Lali. What is a: "a good like here on DG for starting brug seeds"

I have to go out. I will chat more later.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

oooh brain cramp. actually some times my palm brushes across the trackpad on my laptop and things happen.
I was looking for a seed propagating link for brug seeds. I was just going to ask you directly how to do seeds but thought you might know a link.
sorry about that.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Ooooh, we've been needing you begonia, already brug addicted and fun, sometimes that combination is difficult to find, lol!! You know the cutting thing, new way, old way, a dozen other ways in between?? Well, I hate to tell you but starting seeds is the very same way, I doubt any two of us do it alike. You are in Kell's zone in the same state, a bonus, if i was you, I'd do everything just like she does - then there is Clare, CASue, Candy and lots of others that are excellent mentors and willing to share, oh, oh, Margie and Patricia too and i bet I left lotz of others out too. Good to have you with us begonia, new blood, new ideas are great!!!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

So...Would you brugmaniacs put the seed on top of the soil or under the soil. Anyone have photos of seeds?

Begonia seeds are easy, they look like dust. Do you tent the seeds when planted or just leave them be?
Thanks guys. I'll try to be as entertaining as possible.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

You can either peel the core off so that you see the little white seed or just soak the seeds for a day or two. You than put the seeds on top of the damp soil and place the container in a bag. If we have pictures here somewhere, someone will point you in the right direction.

Thanks! I looked at my Brugmansia and Datura book by Preissel and there are no photos, I'm sure there is info here, but when I did a search, it came up with about 8 pages to go through. I ran out of patience. So I looked at my propagation book. Lots of photos, none for brug seeds. I dont even know what a brug seed looks like.

I did a search and here is a site with pictures and explanations.

If I can start seeds, so can you.. When I soak any seeds and when I'm wetting the soil, I always put in some hydrogen peroxide.

Lali, I have been starting my seeds in rockwool. I have had such success I am not going to fool with it. I know some do great with just lightly pushing their seed into wet soil and out under lights. But I got mold and not as many germinated. I have never had a problem with rockwool. I am a true believer! LOL

I just put the rockwool in a Tupperware container. I put in the sink and get it all wet, I turn it upside down to drain for a second. I put the seeds in the holes so I can still see them. If the seeds are small I make new holes with a pencil. I put the seed in the hole so I can still see it.

I take a clear plastic bag and I wet the inside. I then shake it out so there is just beading of water on the inside. I put the Tupperware into the bag. and I twist the top closed and secure it with velcro. A mini greenhouse! I put it under my lights ( just 1 cool fluorescent and 1 warm fluorescent) and do not touch it again till the seedlings are about 2 inches tall. I have no heat under them either!

No muss no fuss and no having to remembering to water them.

Kell, I was reading the rockwool thread (THANKS!!) and saw a picture you posted 1/23/04 @ 12:03 pm. Is that the lighted plant stand you referred to that was made from plans posted here on Dave's? Do you have a complete pic of it?
Sheesh.. There is so-o-o-o-o much information here! I've put off laundry and cleaning and stuff for way too long now. Oh well.. it's waited this long, it can wait some more! ;-)

Holy cow that is a long thread Kell! Thanks for sharing on the RW. I was looking at it the other day when I went into a Hydro store over in Santa Rosa. I pondered it for begonia cuttings and then decided my plate is full with what I have. BUT now I'm game to start some brug seeds which leads me back to my question.....

Does anyone have b. sanguinea seeds to share? Pretty please?

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

LOL, Lali! Talked yourself out of it for about.. two seconds, right? I was just pondering whether the RW would work with Hoya cuttings, too.

Barb

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

LOL, no just talked my self out of RW for begonia cuttings. Have about 6 trays + one cloning machine + one batch in a bucket (see photo) started at the moment. I have too many experiments going on in my 'lab'. (and that's just begonias, i have other hatchlings started of other plants)

Still have space to start a few brug seeds...

Barb, on my Dave'si it is listed at 10:03. LOL. I will take a pic later. I have 2 seedling racks and I love them. I use them as cutting racks too on the off season for seeds.

What is good about PVC racks is you can make the height of each shelf custom. My first shelve is not very deep so the seed trays get close to the bulbs. The second is for when I move them into their own pots so Tom made it deeper. The 3rd shelf is for when I pot them up to gallon size so it is very deep.

I have one in the bathtub too, a great place!!

You can make it as long as you want too, to fit the space you have. Keep in mind you want to fit trays on there when you design yours.

I got the idea form Dave's, lots on here have them. Search under Seedling rack. I think I got my how to from a PoppySue thread.

I will take a picture later. I have to go out now. Sorry Lali, no sang seeds here this year. I have others if you want some.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh I forgot a picture. See how great the roots develop in rockwool.

Kewl! Those on the right.. you can start them from leaf cuttings? Are they the same as this one? Know the name?
Now.. back to Brugs... Hope you get your seeds you want. When I get a bit more experience under my belt I'm going to try these also. That red is drop-dead gorgeous!

If I were you guys, I would try this stuff for cuttings. I have used it a bit for cuttings and I liked it. I didn't like it at all for seeds. I do not think I have really tried rockwool for cuttings though.

I am telling you guys, the hydroponics stores are fantastic if you love to try new products. I go ga ga in there. And broke.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Sure, I'll try a few seeds of yours if you can spare. I'm going to try not to brug out too fast being that they will need large pots and I don't know that I have that much room in my greenhouse (i'm sure you've seen the photos i posted here of it) it's already popping at the seams. I guess I just need a new greenhouse. DH suggested it yesterday, as if he was volunteering! I should have taken him up on it! A new brug house ...yea...that's it... a new brug house!

I'm in the addy exchange i you want to send them, then I can return the postage? Let me know.

To others, I'd still like to try b. sanguinea. I'll wait a week or so and then get the off Ebay...Thanks!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Barb, looks like the same one but I think they are different, mine is not so spotted (see her in the top left corner) . Here's another photo of the parents (not shown is 'Escargot')

sorry to get OT

lali, i don't know what i was google-ing, but ended up here. so cool. anyhow, i use rockwool, too. loving it. can't wait to start more seeds. bought sang seeds online, btw.

do you have rockwool yet? i can send you some to try.

Corte Madera, CA

kell, i did check annie's and none available right now. the price is listed at $8. was not sure about the size.

if hubby takes me to the cliff house next weekend, i might just knock on the door of the house with gorgeous sanguinea blooming all the time and ask for a cutting.

i did promise (brug honor pledge) that i won't take a cutting and drive away.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Annapet, if you do, do not tell us here. LOL LOL.
Sangs are tough to root by cutting. Not as easy as other brugs. Growing by seeds is much easier.

Corte Madera, CA

even if someone dares me, i couldn't do such thing. that's just bad. can't forget the home & garden article a few months ago..i think that person lives in berkeley, and he took a cutting and pedalled his bike away....lol.

there's a property up the hill over 2 acres, has a separate guest house. 10a of course, and more trees up that way. $1.2 million, i think....imagine all the brugs one can grow there.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are a good girl, Annapet!!

Are you sure it is that inexpensive?????? I was just looking online at real estate prices there. Very high. You weather is so much better than mine.

it does sound like a bargain. it has bay views, too. private road up where it's at. i keep going outside the deck if i can see the house from here, but it's a good thing it's hidden.

can't believe i watch the weather like a fool nowadays. hubby says, i'm just thinking about my brugs and not the other plants....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We may just go look at that!!!! I just emailed it to my DH. I bet the lot is all uphill though, not good for a garden or an old lady walking up it.

Corte Madera, CA

cool! think good thoughts...garden terraces....it's all about the zone. lol.

traffic is not bad here at all. only 12 miles from san francisco, too. i love taking the ferry to the city...closer to tomales bay. i know you love those oysters.

lali! where are you? crab season is not on hold anymore!!!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm here. Just saw it in the paper about the crab. Actually we had no trouble finding crab in Bodega for TG. We STUFFED ourselves. BIG Ceasear salad, huge loaves of sour dough numerous bottles of Pinot Grigio and butta butta butta!

Of course it was all low calorie, non fat and we could eat with out guilt! Ha Ha Ha!

I've been off line - my SIL passed away yesterday am and our house was kind of a central location for family members. I'm just now getting back to reading all my favorite forums. I'll be hanging out in the begonias for a while.

Kell, myself and two other DGer met up at Annies Annuals on Sunday. We had a blast and saw some cool stuff. Then I went on to your Ace Hardware and Longs, where I spent way too much $$ But look at my new begonia(begonia erythrophylla 'helix') Also note the blooming hoya coronaria I found (far left)

And to keep on topic. I have my b. sanguineum seeds in rock wool. they are just sitting there. How long does it take to germinate. They've been there since 11/23 and havent changed. I peeled 5 and left 5 alone to see which was best. What should I be expecting?

Thumbnail by begoniacrazii
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Shoot, I forgot to ask my DH what he thought about the house. Of course no way we are moving now. He works in San Ramon, that would be way too far to commute. But I still want to come see it. You never know.

Hi Lali. I am so sorry about your SIL. This will be such a hard holiday season for you.

I have been getting the urge to go to Longs. LOL. So who did you meet there? Anyone I know? Anything good at Annie's?

You just sit and wait. They have not been on there very long. It will depend how old the seeds are. Sometimes it takes awhile. Do you have them bagged and under lights? It is a good thing you asked me. I remembered I had some bagged from 10/27. They were from an immature seed pod. I have 2 trays of them and way too many germinated. They are so leggy, way overdue to come out and get into some soil. I just wish I could look and see what the bloom was going to look like.

Corte Madera, CA

lali, my sincere condolences.

must be good to stop by nurseries today. with the rain and all, it won't be a ZOO. most likely to find NUTS like myself though. lol.

can't wait for my sang seeds. i think i ordered from canada.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I got some real fun stuff at Annies. Several Aloe, plectranthus, poppies for my front yard (i gave up on seeds) misc odd balls.
Saw some real beauties. They have a lot of display pots that are huge. Plus the plants were 30% off. Which is almost buy 2 get one free.

My seeds are under lights (18hrs +) and in a domed tray (that's them under the Hoya 'Ruthie' cutting in front)

Thumbnail by begoniacrazii
Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I found mine on eBay they were like $3 for 10 or something like that. I'm just not very patient on the germination I guess. Also these are on a heated propagation mat too. So they are warm from beneath, humidity is good, plenty of light. ??? Any idea of how many days in general brugs take. This is my first foray into brug seeds?

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

I am also new and I planted some brug seeds on the 8th,some came up 3-5 days later, some more a week later etc.some of them have NOT sprouted at all or only one out of 8-10.

Where did you get that dome ? LOVE the height !!
