Morning Glories 2005 #27

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

This is one AWESOME JMG ! ! !
A new variant for me that just started blooming a couple of days ago.
Had 8 blooms the first day it bloomed.
It is from 2005 Seeds of 'another new variant' from this year,
however, it did NOT grow back 'True', but I am not disappointed.
The seeds are from a JMG that I named after my mom 'Nettie Mae'.
I'll post the 'Original Nettie Mae' also for comparison.
Only planted 2 seeds so am curious to see what the other vine does, and what these seeds produce next year.
Also, very curious to see what the other seeds from the 'Original Nettie Mae' will do next year.

I am fascinated with these blooms. Unlike no other MG that I have grown.
The petals seem to be thicker to the touch than other MGs that I have noticed---
almost 'Velvet-Like' for lack of a better description.
The Softest Solid Pale Pink with a White Throat.
Leaves are Variegated.
The Star on these blooms seem to be almost White -
I will need to pay attention to what the other blooms do to see if I was seeing things.

Ron, what is your opinion of this bloom?????

PS:

Since this is a new Thread . . . .
DON'T FORGET THAT TODAY IS RON'S BIRTHDAY!

Hope you are having a wonderful day, Ron.

Wow Emma! That's a beauty. Do the blooms last longer since they are thicker? I really like the original Nettie Mae too.

Where is Ron? He hasnt posted in a week!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Oh I love the Nettie Mae!!!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Susan and Ronnie.
She is a beauty!

The blooms have been lasting all day, however, I contribute that to the cooler weather and am sure they would not if blooming in warmer/hot weather. The first blooms that I saw was when I returned from Houston/Galveston and all were still open at 5pm. I'll post a couple of photos of those blooms, but only to show the anthers better.
I find it interesting that the tips of the anthers appear to be more 'Yellow' and these photos will reflect that better - which is another reason that I am so curious about this particular MG.

Ok, here is a good question going back to all of the VERY detailed information that Ron shared with us about all of the I. tricolors on Thread #26 http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/553228/

including information about the LOST 'Summer Skies'.

There is now an auction on eBay for 'Summer Skies'
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7723588701&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBI%3AIT&rd=1

which makes me wonder if this is the 'Real Thing'.

Maybe Ron can shed some light on this one for us
and let us know if this REALLY is the 'Lost Summer Skies'.

My Heian no Umi has reached previously untouched levels of wierdness. I feel confident enought to call it a maybe mutant. The corolla has completely split into petals. all the way down to the base of the flower.

Emma, beautiful Almost Nettie Mae blooms. almost gray lady/lavender mist like. But thick? Any seeds coming? lol, sorry for being a seedhound :)

Zem,
You are hilarious!
I will be sure to give you any seeds that I have available to share.
So there!

I will get with you in a few weeks when my life gets a bit more calm.
I'm getting ready to head back to Houston in a couple of days.
Jamie Lynn [our new baby] has changed her mind on when she wants to meet us....lol
Due date has been changed from the 21st to the 16th, so after the end of today, my car will be packed up and ready to go. I just don't want to get that phone call in the wee hours of a morning and drive half asleep, so I am heading to Houston now. Jennifer needs me anyways, as she can barely waddle around the house as it is.

I'll keep up with the thread from Jim's computer.

:) sounds good, lol. keep most for yourself though. Only takes one good seed to get a bazillion next year! Wouldn't want to lose this one!

Congrats on The Baby news! Good things come to good people!

Ron, (if you still exist :), this is a picture of the seedpods from the Ipomoea coccinea vine. What'cha you make of them?

Oh, Emma, Nettie Mae #2 is beautiful. I love it.

Glad to hear that you son is doing so much better, and can't wait to see pictures of your little grandbaby when she decides to make her grand entrance into the world.

Thanks Sylvia,
This MG is at the top of some of my favorites that I've grown this year.

Also, didn't mention in my information above, that the Throat of this MG seems to be a bit more 'deeper' than most I've grown.

I will be sure to stay in touch while in Houston.

Here is my hederacea today. Can I blame the new colors on the temp fluctuations again? I love it!

open father. The thing stuck to the top petal is an anther! literally fused to the petal. For lack of a better term, my heian no Umi vine is "wierding me out" :) Another split bloom is coming...

Them MG, have tissue , issues
LOL

Zem,
just love your 'Feathered Heian no Umi'
or what ever you decide to call it.
That is amazing.
Surely you have those tagged?
to . . . share, maybe *-*

Look how pretty my I. indica is blooming now.
Never remember seeing the blooms this pretty.
And they are a Very Dark Purple at days end and still fully open.
Just gorgeous.

I have very little hope that the feathered bloom would produce seed as the anthers seemed to have very little pollen and one of them was fused to a petal. The vine itself has two seed pods coming and a lot of buds. At least one new but is mutilated like the last one.

Ipomoea Ochracea is coming along nicely. I potted them up into some of those jiffy-pellet thingies (gotta love jiffypellet :) The sayaka has a root now and silky blue is just a massive seed still. We'll see what happens :)

I so wish I had gotten blooms off I. indica though. My vine is taking a beating from the cold now and I really don't think it will last. Do you think I could overwinter a cutting inside (without it taking over my house) (yes, I've seed the kudzu-esque pictures of invasive indicas). Anyway. The leaf type pn yours seems to be not as deeply cut as on my vine (well, mine's reverted back to heart shaped leaves for the time being but it's shall we say... addled by the cold, lol.

Also, Emma, I havethree Umi seeds collected already. (with the two other pods) I'll get you some seeds, ok! Even if very little. But us MG people know what 'very little' seed becomes next year :))

new bud coming. Notice that the entire massive umi plant is in that little pot. I had intended to use some of my new "glory-fu" pruning methods to keep it small but it, well, didn't like the idea :) It became so entwined in my blinds that I can't get it out to repot it :/ does it care? no! :)) these things are so hardy.

Zem,
Yes, you can over-winter I. indica. See if you have any runners at the base of the plant that has roots to start new vines. If not, cut the entire plant and root some cuttings. They root easily in water. May as well dig up your plant while you are at it and pot it up, as it 'probably' will not survive your temps. This is the only way you can keep it going each year in your zone. I wouldn't worry too much about it taking over your house either. If you get the plant going and the root system strong enough, you can keep it cut back.

I think the morning glory blooms are the prettiest after it has turned cool in the fall. Maybe it is their way of saying good by. I have been looking at some photos on the link from Tairin the eBay seller and am wondering now if my Royal Blue Blizzard type might be Sazanimi or Murakumo. What does anyone who has grown these two think? The blooms were maybe 3.5" to 4".
I also noticed that Cynda has some of the Sazanimi seeds for sell on eBay now and that is who I got the ones from that had this seed mixed in with them.

After looking back over an old post listing the seeds I ordered last fall, I have decided that the morning glory I have been calling Asuka NOT is Heian Akathuki. I orded both Asuka and Heian Akathuki from the same seller and must have mislabeled one pot. If anyone has grown Heian Akathuki and does not agree with this ID, please let me know. Otherwise, I think anyone I traded with can go ahead and put the Heian Akathuki name of the ones I labeled Asuka NOT.

Susan, whatever that is, it's amazing! I love the star pattern!
I've gotta remember next year to get the seeds in earlier. :) Learn some things the hard way, though.

Anyway. My Umi plant has had another bloom (picture below). Again just as ripped up. Love these things! My Umi is apparently very unstable, going back and forth from shredded blooms to full blooms to splothy ones and back to shredds :)

Susan, your photo looks like seeds that I actually grew out of Emma's Plum Frost!!!

see my photo, Emma and I were tentatively calling it Plum Frost "star" because of that star pattern.

(also I think that the Heian Akathuki is a deeper rose color, believe I have a photo somewhere, let me find mine)

here is Emma's Plum Frost with Star

Heian akathuki this was Donna's last year :) they are so similar to the other one, but more pink I think????
