Announcing the 5th annual DG Photo Contest!

This morning I opened up the 5th annual photography contest!!

http://davesgarden.com/contest/2005/

There are a tremendous amount of categories! It looks like we'll end up with over a thousand entries.

Entries close and voting begins after November 31st or November 30th, whichever actually exists. The entire membership will be casting anonymous votes for the winners.

Have fun!!

If I have a picture of my apple trees in bloom in spring in my yard would that be a spring picture or a landscape picture or a view picture? Can you put a picture in more than one category?

It's up to you to enter the photo in whichever category you think you'll win. :)

dave

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

So pick only one category even if it might overlap?

I think so.

dave

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

OK to post the same photo in several catagories,
where applicable?

Ric

Let's just not overdo anything. :)

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

Dave,

Is there a limit to the number of photos you can post?

K

No limit.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I am confused as at how to enter a photo. For instance, a person wishes to enter a photo in "The Brugs and Friends category" and have it judged under the category "Longest whisker". Does he/she just enter the photo in "The Brugs and Friends category" and then the photos are going to be divided up into the judging categories by someone?

Another example: a person wants to enter a photo of a bee. Is the photo uploaded to "The Birds, Butterflies, Bees and Bugs category" and all of the photos in this category are all lumped together for judging? Or are all of the bee photos going to be separated into the judging category "Best Bee Picture"?

In other words, how are the photos going to be separated for judging in each judging category so people can easily vote on them? It would be great if one was able to enter his/her photo into a specific judging category within the overall category. I have never entered the contests because this has always been confusing to me.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Hazel,
When you enter a photo in Brugs it is open for judging in any of the categories. It will just depend on how the viewers judge it. It may get picked for best all around, longest whisker etc. Each picture entered can be judged in any of the categories available.
Gosh I hope this makes sense

ETS -I can tell you that it will make sense when Dave opens the forum for judging. Categories such BBBB will show a picture and the 4 categories next to it. Most wouldn't choose Best Bee on a butterfly picture! LOL You can vote for as many pictures as you want in whatever category you want and if you change your mind only your last vote will count.

NOW it's clear, right??

Stacey

Is there some way we can get more judging categories under the Pets heading? Perhaps something like:

Furry
Finned
Feathered
Scaled
Barnyard
Group Shots (mixed species)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Stacey, that makes sense to me. Thanks for the information.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

How about a category just for vines, we have morning glories, but nothing for vines? what do ya say???

Proctorville, OH(Zone 5b)

OK, I'm dumb. I can't view the entries, yet. Under Trees & Shrubs it says 97 entries so far... But nothing is showing... & nothing wants to be clicked... LOL
Ab

Unless of course it won't be viewed until all are submitted...... AHhhhh sooo

I have entered 4 pictures and each time I type in what category I want it in.

woodspirit: that's not a good idea. It's better to just submit the photo and let the judges decide if they want to award you in any specific category.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Dave, I was wondering about the vine category, I mean, we have morning glory category, but wondered if we could possibly get a second category for vines: clematis, and oh just soo soo many different numerous vines out there :)

thanks
Laurrie

Vines are added!

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks Dave!!!

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Wonderful! Thanks Dave! :~)

(Zone 8b)

Dave,
There seem to be categories for several specific tyoes of flower, Iris, and Daylily for example, but nowhere to put other types. Could we have a Garden Fowers and Plants category? or is it there but hidden somewhere I can't find it?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

About the confusion over categories, I think it's like this. When all the pictures show up in, say, Pets....as a member/judge, I will look for what I think is the best furry and vote on it. Then look at all the same pictures and choose the one that I think is the best finned one and vote on it. Then look at all the same pictures and choose the best feathered one, etc, etc. I have the option of placing a finned picture in the furry category if I want to. no one will stop me, I guess. But it would be pointless.

Not that I or anyone would actually do that. I'm just trying to illustrate. Am I right?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes you're right but you can vote 'best' for more than one picture. When Dave closes the judging the numbers are counted and the ones with the most votes are the winners.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

what are the guidelines for judging the entries?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

You can be the judge of that ;-)

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

we set our own guidelines, this is judging by us :) we just pick and choose the ones that catch our fancy, have fun!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Wait, if I can vote for more than one photo for "Best..." doesn't that mean I can vote more than once for the same photo? That would make it possible to stack the ballot box, so to speak. Wouldn't it?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

If you can't decide which of say three pictures you like you can vote for all of them and your votes are counted with all the others for those pictures. Your last vote for any picture is the one that counts...just like the weekly voting booth. The end results are the total votes for each picture.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

When is this closing?
And can you add just favorite veggie or fruit pictures, as I would have nothing to fall into any of the categories you have right now under fruits and veggies. Or beautiful veggie or fruit arrangement? Something to that effect. Kathy

Crossville, TN

Where would gourds go...some still growing and some with the art work done on them? Jo

I hate to be a pain, but where would we put closeups of blooms that don't fall under the specific flower-type categories? Container gardening doesn't have a closeup category, and one couldn't tell if it was in a container or not if it's a close up. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
RG

Edited to say:
Never mind. I checked the Misc. category!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

why not a farm life category?

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

That would be good TF :)

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Raingazer, I put my close-ups under miscellaneous flowers.

Richmond, VA

hi dave, do you want only compressed images? let me know if there are any size restrictions
thanks, this is fun

If they aren't compressed, then the system compresses them for you, so it's probably better to just upload them compressed to make it faster for you.

I recommend jpeg, 800 pixels wide, and around 75-80% compression.

best,
dave

Calvert County, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmmm, Thats why my big pictures (I was afraid that they would take up 5 times the screen) are small :) I thought that was just my computer. Useful feature!
