You are right, Maria. It could be easy to lose control of it just by a huge tractor-trailer passing me at 75 mph and then I could just be a greasy spot on the road, or a jumbled, wrecked mess in the ditch.
Coffee and...Part 48...! :-D
Darius, what about renting a U-Haul type truck and towing your truck behind, with both of them loaded ? U-Haul, to my mind has too many hidden costs, but maybe others are better. Just a thought.
Darius, when do you plan to leave to take the first plants? Where are you taking them (I think I remember to a friend's place???) Would it be cheaper to rent a bigger truck to pull a bigger trailer rather than pay for all that extra gas? Just a thought, or, rent a small sized moving van?
Ah yes, Robert, great minds think alike!
Man oh man, have I had a wild day!! Started out this morning when I decided to hand deliver a halloween card/$$ in it to my DGS house. On the way there I stopped at the post office drop of mailbox. Got to DGS house and - NO CARD. So I went back to the post office and explained my problem. Nice clerk went outside to empty out the drop box, but her key wouldn't work. Told me to come back later in the afternoon.
Went many places, one of which was Target. Bought some needed ink cartridges for the printer - they were on sale. Black was normal price, but color seemed really cheap - the same as the black. Anyhow got to the pay station and the colored rang up full price - 'not so fast I exclaimed' - check the price!! They were mismarked!! yahoo - saved $11 on each colored container!! Girl there was soo nice - said it was there mistake!!
Then I went back to the post office to see if they found my card. However on the way there I called DH (who was home from work by that time) and asked him to check the counter- sure enough the card was HOME!! LOL on me! Cost me about $ 10 in gas with all the fooling around!!
Mary - congrads on winning!! (we all knew you were a winner...)
Defo- yes I eat venison- actually like it. But then again, I like liver too!! Carat- cook some of that liver for me. I like it with onion, mashed potatoes and ketchup. I haven't made it for years since I found out it was a filter organ- somehow it just doesn't seem so appealing anymore.
Joy - ahhh a Christmas gift that I would love!! For one BD I got a John Deere and this past xmas I got a bagger to go with it. Love it. DS got me a garden cart to pull behind it. I'm in hog heaven. Don't ya just love gifts that you can put to use!!
Darius- how about renting one of those uhaul trucks to drive down to Molly's. Be careful in the mountains. I always freak out when I see those run away truck things...Actually saw one go up one - scared the beejeebees outta me! One time driving down to Fla from Mich - going thru the mountains, DH hung out the window saying 'I smell something burning - I think it is our brakes - I was driving at the time and about passed out!! I made the kids rub my neck - I was so full of tension.
mg- ouch - that siatic stuff is no fun. I had mine pinched for several months- I hurt no matter how I sat or laid. Finally went away - don't know how! But I know I don't want it back!
Had a huge piece of pizza at Sam's while I was waiting for my pics to be developed, so I am not hungry at all for dinner. Wish DH would skip dinner too, but he NEVER misses a meal. Ahh, just remembered there are some leftovers in the frig- gonna get them out and serve it to him....
Still have some cream puffs- I like them even better today- softer!!
Robert, Mary, Sarv... I did look at renting a truck and pulling my truck behind so I can drive home. Smallest that will pull a trailer for my truck is 17', truck alone is $39.95 a day ($49.95 on weekends) PLUS 39¢ a mile, not counting the trailer rent AND GAS. Came to over $600 without gas, and they don't get good mileage. Gas round-trip in my truck should be around $200.
I have more Time than Money, LOL. However, I may re-consider when the next 2 trips have to be made and I have won the Lottery. : )
Ahh, well I went to go place Darius package in my vehicle so I don't forget it and it was missing. I ran around in a bit of a panic and then called DH. He took it to work and mailed it from there. Aww, and to think I was going to yell at him. He thought she would like her surprise a bit early but unfortunately it will be late for the birthday.
Managed to get all the bed linens washed and put back, I even did the dust ruffles off the boys. Having chilli for dinner. Seems to have became a tradition when I wasn't looking. I am going to make some fresh corn bread and DH is stopping to pick up an onion because the ones in the frig just didn't look right. Can't wait until I can just grow my own.
MG-be careful with that bursa sack. I fell a few years back at work, got up and went on my way. After sitting at my desk for a bit I tried to get up and couldn't move. My secretary had to call 911 to get me to the hospital. I burst the bursa sack and was out of work on pretty much bed/ stomach rest for 6 weeks while it healed. I still have some problems when I try to do to much but its nothing as what it was. Bedrest for a person like me was horrible. I did discover that I could solve every problem on those soap operas with the word, NO.
Darius, do check on that truck with towing harness for your truck. It should be alot cheaper and safer I think.
Sarv-funny that you mentioned why you don't care for liver much anymore. Same reason I don't. I watched a video and I really have to be suffering from a bad craving before eating it anymore.
Oh, by the way that was my hand snatching that cream puff on the right. Couldn't help it.
Darius you snuck in there with your more info on the truck. Hmmm, did you try other places. Just doesn't sound right for some reason.

Well my friends and I had a very nice long talkative lunch. When I got home, started pulling out plants that mr frost had gotten. Got all that cleaned up, and discarded, then decided that to fill in the bare spaces, I need some pansys and ornamental cabbage and kale. I will get those on Wednesday, when I go to the nursery.
Darius, I think your best bet would be Bal's suggestion. Fill the rental truck and yours, and tow your truck. '
Carat, ah governmental red tape, I love it. Since you are doing the transactions from out of state, they will try every way to "sock it to you". Glad to see that you are up on it.
Mary CONGRATULATIONS I was just sure that you would win. Way to go. Now, tell us what you plan to do with all your free time this winter.
Morning Gayle, Sure hope the anti inflatories work, and you are pain free in no time. Haven't had that, but have bursitis in my hips, and sometimes the pain is just horrible.
Mary, sounds like you are feeling much better. So glad to hear it.
Bal, glad to hear the puppy training is going so well. We are going away for the weekend, and will have to take Mr. B along. I went to the vet to get something for him to take before the trip, as he is not a good traveler. Since he is only 10 pounds, vet didn't want to give him a tranquilezer, so recommended giving him 25 mg benadryl. So am going to try it, and sure hope it works. His tummy gets upset, with dire consequences.
Well off to begin supper. It will incorporate a lot of left overs from yesterday.
Will check in later.

New Here, just wanted to say Hi. I really like the DG website. I have been hopping around through some of the forums for about a week and you all sound like a cool bunch.
I am still trying figure out what some of the abbreviations are for. Example DGS I thinks is grandson, but what is the D for?
.
HOORAY for Mary! We are very proud of you. I was just thinking last night, wondering if you had finished your ride and were home again! I was here earlier and told a bunch of lies about how much i was going to get done....I managed the trip to HD and bought a new disposal, but got side tracked when I remembered that I had promised DIL a couple of extra chairs. I picked up two slat backed chairs last summer (04) and one had been stripped and refinished but the other had layers of paint on it. Got them both for $5...but hadnt done anything to the painted one. So, thinking if I am going to give them away, I should make them match. (This is the kind of thinking that gets gardeners in trouble.)
So, of course being at HD, I bought stripper, and then as soon as I got home proceeded to work on the chair. So. That's all I have done. Besides eat lunch. LOL Any way, I got about three layers of paint off, and still need to do another slather of stripper on the rungs and little corner places. I hosed it down to get the chunky stuff off and now it's drying outside, so the touch up will have to wait until tomorrow. Messy work. Got that stuff all over my jeans and sweatshirt, so it's likely to eat holes in the fabric. I'll be right in style, every kid I see either has holes in their pants or they are wearing the belt somewhere around their hips and the bottoms are scraping up dirt off the ground. I have to assume all these kids are extremely honest because if they had to run from the cops in those pants, they'd be caught within ten steps.
Robert, DH will probably install that disposal tonight. He's not one to put off that kind of chore, most of the time. Starving him wouldn't work anyway, he knows where all the good stuff is....!
Darius, a big rental truck would probably be a better bet than double tripping with your little one. You'd only be exhausted once... Not sure I'd trust that sister with your plants either. Isn't there some place else you could foster them where they'd get watered and be safe? It would be tragic to lose them on top of all the other grief you've been through these past couple of months. And, Gas Bag award should definitely go to us.....
Carat, I've done that duplicate book buy more than a few times. I hate it when they change the cover and fool me. I'm sure it's a conspiracy among the publishers because nobody will let you return a paperback even if it's unread.
Ischealgluteal bursitis-could be caused by sitting at the computer for too long? LOL No, I'm sorry, it's not funny...i just blame all my aches and twinges from sitting in front of this monitor too much. So, now I'm going to do like Sarv, grab a book and plant myself in a comfy chair and read for a while. It's almost 3:30 already, another day just flew by. Haven't decided what's for dinner...didn't we have dinner yesterday? Why do we have to have it every day?
Suzie, hi and welcome. I am to a newbie to the board but I feel so at home and everyone is so nice and very helpful.
The D stands for darling, dear or sometimes a little less kind of a word. It's the same for DH (husband), DW (wife), DIL is Daughter in law.
Since you said you read some of our post you know a bit about us so tell us about you.
Casey
Carat, I'm so FAR in the Boonies that there are no alternatives. Even this place is across the mountain about 45 miles away. Plus I don't have enough money to spend $600 plus maybe $200 or more in gas one way when I can do a round-trip for around $200. I wlll stay with a cousin en route, so no lodging expenses.
I will just be glad to be breathing better air for a few days!
I plan to load up Wednesday afternoon, drive to my cousin's near Gainesville (FL) Thursday, and on to my sister's on Friday. PLan to leave for home Monday or Tuesday, depends on how tired I am. May take the long route home and see my oldest half-brother in Jacksonville overnight.
MG, so sorry to hear of your bursar problems. Hope it will heal soon.
Well okay, but please be careful. Gosh a road trip for the bunch of us to track you down in the mountains is going to run us all up into the 20-30 pounds of chocolate range. Not to mention the alcohol consumption to offset the sugar rushes. OMG and then pit stops for Depends restocking.
Maybe we need to start a Darius to Florida fund, it might be cheaper for all.
JK
Casey
Carat - Hi, I live in Central NJ, Hunterdon county to be exact. One of the few places in the "Garden State" where you still have room to garden. We have a small farm, most of it is rented out, but in the future I would like to change that.
I live with my DH, DS and recently 2 adult step-children have managed to move back in. My son is 18 and works full time for a carpenter and part time on a dairy farm.
We have a vegetable garden, but this year it was'nt what it should be. Just not enough time to spend in it. I work full time, so garden time is limited. I hate this time change, I get even less time outside.
I'm still at work, so have to keep this short
Thanks for explaining the"D".
Suzie, Welcome!
Got a call just a bit ago from an old friend that has the most adorable 4 year old twin granddaughters. The girls asked where chocolate came from as mom was adding ingredients to the cake batter she was making. After telling them that the cocoa she was using came from a plant the girls seemed satisfied with that answer. A couple hours later mom was cleaning up the kitchen and when she lifted the cocoa can noticed the previously full can was now empty. Going directly to the typical culprits to inquire what happened she found them outside just finishing up planting and watering the cocoa powder in their flower garden. They wanted to make sure that my next summer mom had enough cocoa to make lots of chocolate cakes.
Gosh I miss mine being that cute.... Now I just have yucky ol teenagers to drive me crazy....
Welcome, Suzy, I know you will love it here!
Summer in the east was not very good anyway, drought through the whole of it and then rain that did not want to stop, hope next year will be better.
Little ones are just so adorable, Casey, stories like that bring back wonderful memories
Feel better each day, but scatica does not want to go away, it is time now to see my Chiropractor.
So far only two little ones came by trick or treating, with their mother one of my neighbor, kids are about 6 and 3. so cute.
Maria
Welcome aboard suzie. We always love having new people join us. If there's food on the counter help yourself, its cyber-fat free, and there are a lot of mighty good cooks drifting around this thread. We'll laugh with you when you're happy and cry with you when you're sad. Rave and praise as you need, we're here.
How come those 4 year olds got away with that? My Mom wouldda swatted me if (when) I snitched the cocoa. Course, I gotta admit, they had a better excuse ready and I was on my own - no twin to bail me out!.
Sure wish I could get in on those endurance rides. I grew up with horses, and I would love to be able to saddle up and go for the long ride again. Congrats on the win, we knew you were the winner long ago.
I know I've missed some of you that I want to speak to, but its late, and I still haven't even thought about what to fix for supper, much less fixed it.
back later-
Hi all, home from work now. Thanks for making me feel at home here.
I love hearing cute kid stories. I have a 3 year old grandson and 2 year old granddaughter (step children's kids) who are little rascals. Ya never know what they are gonna say. The cocoa story was cute!
Maria - I hope your back feels better soon.
Hi all,
Generator is running, but no hot water here. I worked today and just took a cold shower.....I hate that, I thought my heart was going to stop. In this dim light I can still see some paint on my hands, well that's too bad, and it's too bad I won't stay there and shave my legs or anything else. We are pioneers here, have to rough it!!!
Yall have been so busy I have a hard time keeping up, so many posts, so many threads.
I just have a salad tonight, tastes good since we had no fresh veggies for a week. Was afraid to buy any for fear they would turn too quickly without refrigeration. My dSIL left us with some chicken and steak marinating and ready to cook on the grill. Man that lady is a great cook. I can do the same marinade as her and still it's not as good.
After Wilma went through here we dug a lot of plants and potted them up. My flowerbeds look so bare, even if it didn't get dark so early, I haven't the heart to go out there.
Our neighbors across the street have power. They leave their porch lights on and they shine across the street into my bedroom window. Sometimes it feels like a taunt.
I have many things I could/should be doing, but my motivation level just isn't up to snuff right now.
I'll work another day tomorrow, then I think I will take a day off. Dig some more plants and plan a trip to the property, maybe by the end of the week.
Thanks for listening to me moan.
Molly
Anytime, Molly.... moan away. Many of us are a bit "long in the tooth" to rough it. I'd have stayed dirty and just had a "Pit bath" LOL. A cold shower would probably have caused a heart attack!
Molly, you are far from moaning. I am glad to hear that you are able to joke about your pioneering. I know it must be taking alot to get used to. I know that when the power goes off here I feel a little lost as in what to do. And that is just the power with out all the other stresses that you have to go along with it. My hat off to you, my dear.
Suzie, I haven't made it to to grandchild phase yet, but keeping tabs on the score card for the stuff DD and DS are pulling now. As DH says, "now we know why some animals eat their young"
Okay all you who know where Clover-York, SC is, and for that don't its a 30 minute drive south from Charlotte, NC am I going to need to get some of those really warm and cozy boots and stuff because of the cold?
Most of you don't know it but I have blondes in my life and I had one of them to the vet Saturday and have spent most of the day with my Jenny mostly sleeping in the chair beside my chair. She is not eating and is skin and bones I am taking her back to the vet tonight I have a good one. I have also had a lot of dogs in my life and I am very nervous about this one and this is just not right.
First is Gabby she is ten next is Jenny at ten weeks then comes Andy at five months. Sure hope Max can figure something out tonight . If any of you are super human and have a nose to twich to make things better please do she is such a sweetheart.
Nah, Casey... at least not like you'd need in upstate New York. SC gets cold in winter but not much snow, just cold winds. A good windproof jacket with maybe a removeable liner, adequate boots to keep feet warm and dry in 10º weather, polartek hat and good gloves. MOST important: ice scraper for the windshield.
I rode to school in Columbia SC during the winter in an open rumble seat when I didn't walk 1/2 mile to the school bus stop. The kids at the bus stop always built a fire, and I didn't have a warm jacket so I was thankful.
I think cold wind is much worse than snow... wind goes right through you whereas sunlight off the snow warms you. Statistically, something like 40% of body heat is lost through the head, so you need a decent cap. If you are not accustomed to cold winters at all, you might want to buy a couple pairs of good silk long johns. They are very thin, warm, machine washeable and fit under regular slacks or jeans.
You'll get ice a few times a year but it won't last long. Heck, what am I saying? WHO KNOWS with the crazy weather patterns we are having?
Molly, you have a right to moan, probably more than the rest of us, I don't hate a lot of things but to be without electricty tops the list, so much so I ordered a generator today ,just in case we lose power because of a snow storm if it is as bad as last winter.
Ernie wish I had magical talents, would make Jenny healthy for you this very moment, but keep the faith, that she will be good as new before long it is hard to have a brand new baby ill like that.
So far had only only 5 little ones for trick or treating, anybody for chocolate candies?
Maria
Thanks Darius, I know I am going to have to get used to it. I haven't really had any use for a real winter coat for a few years. I was at home nursing my hip for a winter then with mom and dad I went no where for the next couple of years. I know I am going to get me a good pair of warm boots for when I do have to go out and the ground is wet. Gloves, a hat and some longjohns and I will be good to go. Yahoo....
Casey, I mostly wear a light jacket over a sweater (and long johns) is all but the very worst of the weather, and I'm at least a zone or more colder than you will be. But, I'm also used to it.
When I was in FL last winter, Feb. to April, I wore just a long sleeved shirt over a sleeveless tee while my sister wore a winter jacket when we were at Lowe's or HD. Some days in the sunshine I'd be down to the sleeveless tee while she shivered. I guess it's all how you acclimate yourself.
Darius, with that info I think I might be purchasing a parka. I am such a whimp anymore. I am usually okay so long as my feet stay warm. They get cold and I am going inside by the fire.
For the past few years all I have needed is a lightweight jacket. A few time in January and February I had to wear a sweater with that but on the most part it was with a T shirt. But I always have worn boots and warm socks to avoid the chance of the cold feet.
Carat - The nice thing about grandkids - THEY GO HOME. You spoil them and then send them home for their parents to deal with. haha
e-weed - your furbabies are darling. I will pray for your Jennie tonight.
We get no trick or treaters here. When the area was more rural, we would get a few. Now that there are more housing developments, everyone goes there so they don't have to drive around so much.
We are being invaded with trick or treaters here. Its only a little after 5 barely dark and they are coming in groves. I have DS outside in a lawn chair with his head phones on so the door bell doesn't send the dogs barking with each ring. We usually get quite a few but not usually this early in the evening, normally they wait until after dinner time.
Casey, like you I do well if my feet are warm and dry. The rest just goes along!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!
No trick or treaters yet. Only get a few which is kind of disappointing. I like to see the costumes and the little kids.
Casey, when are you moving to NC? I would buy a coat for sure. My son comes home from college in AZ at Christmas time and he dives for his jacket. It will take you awhile to get used to the cold, like Darius says, you have to get used to it.
MOLLY, am so glad you are still alive, hehe. Keep going. Sounds like you are definitely camping out with that dang cold shower. But soon you will be in your new home!!!
Eweed, hope your puppies get better. No fun with sick animals.
I finally got some yard work done today. Being gone all last week put me way behind on getting the garden beds cleaned up. Some of my poor dahlias ended up tumbling over with the rain and wind. So had to cut them totally down and put a cap over the open stalk to protect the tubers from rotting. Winter is coming, so sad.....
Anyways, it is to rain for days here so hope to get a few other things done before heading back up to Washington for my father, who is plugging away at learning to walk again. Doing good today he told me when I called him.
Later, Carol (DR)
Wonderful about your Dad, Carol, How long does it take you to drive to Bellingham?
Maria
Ernie, so sorry to hear about Jenny. I suppose it's too early for the Vet to have come up with anything. Keep us informed. It doesn't take much to affect the little ones. Hope it isn't anything serious.
Ah, Ernie... just realized I have not posted about your pup. Best wishes for a healthy outcome.
Just a couplea things real quick, Ernie, I hope your sweet puppy is better soon. Keep us posted. Your picture of them all lined up is so cute, I just want to hug them all.
Molly, get one of those solar showers that is a plastic bag with a few gallons capacity, put it where the sun shines on it all day and you will have hot water for your shower. I bet you are looking forward anxiously to an end in this chapter of your life and on to your new place! Thanks for checking in, we miss your regular posts.
Dcat, it's your friend, so be supportive, give her a shoulder to cry on and just be there, you don't have to take sides.
I got some gardening done today but it got dark too soon. The new horse is in the pasture with 2 of the others, getting along ok. You never know when new ones are added, but I had the advantage of opening up a new pasture today and they all are so happy with green grass that they don't bother about each other.
See you later, dinner is ready, salmon and pasta casserole and green salad.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/554563/
I posted some pictures of what my flat land looks like.
Daisyruffles, I am moving to South Carolina in January of 2007, but more important I am so glad to hear your dad is up and trying.
