Session #44 (Started Oct. 23, 2005)
Lurkers are cordially invited to join in any time...
*still smelling of onion and garlic from the last thread*
Say, Julie, if you ever want one of us to start a new thread when the previous one hits 100 or so posts, I'd be happy to do it. I lurk like crazy, but don't want you to lose your automatic link when you start the thread. :)
I think you're going to get your Upper Midwest Forum. Been lurking there, too. lol
Donna
You are right, Donna, but it was not in Las Vegas it was in Connecticut at Fox Woods Casino, what fun that was have not been there since!
Maria
People don't win here..... That is why the hotels and casinos look so dang good. They take not give.
Casey
I loved that story, Maria! Couldn't think of a finer lady for it to happen to, either. :-)
I've been busy trying to collect up all the pics that I wanted to submit for PlantFiles earlier in the season but didn't get around to. While I enjoy taking pics of my nice urban veggie garden and small flower gardens (small so far! hehehe), I like to visit the local/public gardens for plants I might also want to add to the current landscape, especially perennials.
I like low-maintenance flowers since I focus on the veggies during the summertime, but oh, I do love the flowers! :)
Donna
Casey, you are so right!!!! do not recomend any one to gambel unless they can afford it, unfortunately most people that do can not,.
I like to gamble but am very cautious regarding my ability what I can spend and no more. Have been quite lucky so far, hope that willl keep up.
Maria
Maria, that is wonderful that you have found good luck so many times. I have several friends that have won big here, they are locals and dont play anywhere near the strip. Most locals all know that the plastic all stays home and you plan on loosing what ever your limit is and that is it.
The biggest issue that we see now is all these people that play poker on the internet and win with fake money, then think they can't loose, liquidate their assets, come here and loose it all in one night and then they are stuck with no money and no way to get home. Sad.... Really.
Here's a laugh, DH and I were at a dinner party last fall and we were talking to the mayor and a few other politicians when someone brought up the subject of a lottery for Las Vegas. A few of them, mind you with a straight face actually said that they wouldn't support a lottery because it would give the impression that we needed the money. ????????? We do need the money. Our schools are in BIG trouble here.
Casey
Morning all, been up about an hour must get dh off to work. Didn't train properly and must pack his lunch and then call at the "appropriate" time. lol....who am I kidding he trained me just right! Got a few minutes before I do the same for ds.
MG, Dcat, Ann thanks for the wonder where's. I still missed a thread a while back but cannot remember which one it was so other than than I do keep up with you and have now put a tablet next to the keyboard.
MG even though I only work on Saturday, I would in a minute hire someone to run the shop to come to the reunion. The only weekends that I would not be able to come is the last 2 in April. Our church has a missionary conference and I am in charge of the kitchen and meal planning and really could not miss that. Told dh last night that I was going to go if there was one as long as it was not to far over the Mississippi, looks like you are cutting it close. ;-))
Ann, mom is gone to all intents and purposes some days when I am feeding her I wonder who this lady is and why do I keep fighting with her to get a little nourishment in to her. We three kids take turns feeding mom lunch and my 80 year old dad is there every afternoon till 8 pm and feeds her supper. She hid it well for a lot of years nearly drove us crazy not knowing what was going on! Then we went through the fighting years, when her fears and all the nasty of this disease grabbing and shaking the daylights out of her almost killed my dad. One day it all broke and we had mom in the home four days later the day after her 74th birthday.
What a sad party, we knew what we had to do the next day and she was in a 'good mood' eating chicken wings and shooting the bones under the table, like it was the most natural thing to do !! We still giggle over that. We have a great place for mom it is privately run and only 45 clients. With us in their all hours of the day we are pleased with it knowing what they do have to put up with, all but about 10 clients are in some stage of dementia. You do what you have to and physically we could not do anything else on our own so now we have moved all family holidays, parties and what ever to the livingroom near her room and act/cut up just like we always did at her home! We even had a Thanksgiving dinner there for about 20 people one year.
See why I don't post to often, ya can't shut me up!! My greenhouse temp is at 45* right now and that is with a small electric heater running on low and way to many places for warmth to escape! I must figure something better out. I only have some coleus and cuttings, something with red leaves I got in an assortment from Park Seeds that I want to use everywhere next year, some geraniums, and my lantanas. Lantana is great!! It survived our drought this summer and is still going strong where I planted it in the yard (pic attached). I have it is two other colors in pots and I hope to start lots of cuttings from them this winter.
must go get the boy moving, will be checking in later. Have a doc. appt. this afternoon and may just play lazy till then.
enjoy the day.
Joy
I am continually astounded at what a bunch of gabbers you all are in the evening!! Using first names is ok, but I need to make a list of who is who first!! We should have all signed on with our first names...
I slept 6 hrs last night - a record. Woke at 3:30am. DH and I worked out butts off yesterday. Put the gutter guard stuff on our second story - via the truck camper. DH washed the windows as long as he was there- they hadn't been done in over 5 yrs and it was getting hard to see thru them!! While I was waiting/helping him, I continued to wash more windows. Then we stacked 6 loads of wood - that was the killer for me!! Oh, my arm is complaining...
DIL and I went to the store together in the evening. We both got one of those 18 qt rival turkey cookers- now I don't know why I got one, I don't plan on having Thanksgiving again- did it for years - it's my turn to be a guest!! But I love cooking things!!
Can't remember who had the little one who slept with her legs up - man, can you imagine trying to do that now!! Sure was a cute pic tho.
As far as being old- I worry about health going down the tubes, running out of moola etc. But then I have always been a worrier, so this is nothing new- just a new worry for me. I have often thought about asking the doc for an anti dep - think that would take care of the worries??? I would love to be carefree just once in my life!
Maria- you won how much!!! Yipee - what ya going to spend it on??? The only thing I have won in my life is a turkey thru a radio station - and my mom send in my name!! LOL I have gone to casinos twice in my life, but loved it so much, that I try stay away from them. I would lose everything. I have a good friend that is truly addicted - she even refinanced her house for more $$ to spend. She often spends more in a week than she has coming in. Sad....
My new tv chest is coming today - can't remember if it is in the am or pm. After they come, I'm going to get a couple of more 2.47 clematis and see if I can find some more daylilies. I have 6 proliferations, but the color is ghastly orange and I don't want to put them next to my red monarda.
Made a pumpkin pie- it's on the counter. I thought DH would like it, but he tells me he hates pumpkin - how can we have been married for 37 yrs and I not know that!!! I've already had 3 pieces.
ya ya ya - I know I should not buy oreos- I have no control over those either - less than 10 left- I'll finish them today!
A brief good morning. Have to get cracking, but I have to say congrats to Maria. It's about time you had something to cheer about.
More later.
Ann
Good Morning Every Body!
Was up and down before I finally went to sleep at 3 Am. Just came in from a walk, it is cold and raw out of doors, worse than I nice crisp winter day, we suppose to get more rain, depressing to say the least
Sarv, can't belief you forgot your DH does not like pumkin pie lol
My DH was addicted to oreos, ate them right up, all of them since I do not care for them, your windows must sparkle, I always say after windows are washed, 'Oh, boy I forgot trees grew out there' lol
Gambling can be very addictive, I am glad I do not live near a casino
I'd be there more often, it is a good thing I do not like to drive any distance only went when DH still could drive and that was quite a few years ago. I do like to get those instant tickets, am quite lucky with them, I buy a few once a week. A few weeks ago I went shopping with my daughters, they stopped at a liquor store to get some wine I just bought an instant ticket as they checked out, it was $100.00 i said to them, here is $ 50.00 for each of you! They just stared at me and said how do you to that winning most every time you buy one oft hose, LOL
Don't know what I am going to spend it on, Sarv, who said I now have money to go the GOB reunion but where is it and when is it ?????
Joy, I feel for you, I know what it is like to care for some one so very ill. My husband suffered dementia for a few month before he died due to Parkinton, it broke my heart how this super intellegent man ended up like that, I had to feed him, I think he forgot what to do with it always wondered what he is thinking about. some times he would look at me and ask 'who are you'?
Thanks, Ann it was fun to win!
Maria
Gambling, have a cousin that started out only using lottery winnings and pop can returns left purse in car etc. Now they go to the casino with more cash each time. She is always trying to justify herself to me by saying..."you spend money on your computer......I go to the casino, same thing". This is all said without me saying a word. Her life.....she is also a 'large' woman in her mid 50's and she fell yesterday and broke a rib and has 2 black and blue uppers!! We laugh on the phone but I know she is really hurting.
Maria, so glad your girls are close by..........enjoy enjoy enjoy. Thanks for the kind words
Sarv, don't you just love new 'stuff'. We went a little wild with some of dh inheritance last year, new sectional (said I wouldn't have new lr furniture till ds grew up, too much wrestling!) new dining set, new armoir for bedroom tv and a table and chairs for big window in bed room for bird watching.
Pic of part of new room dh built last summer. It is 16' x20' with 2 closets (never had one before, very old house). Best of all it is right next to the bathroom!!!!!!! Doors go out to my 'gully bed' hopefully a gazebo about 30 feet from the door some day.
Joy
Maria- you DH was a man after my heart - oreos!!! I seldom make pies - I know DH loves lemon merange (sp x?) I think I've made 2 in my lifetime.. My mom was always bringing us pies, so I never made them. However she doesn't cook much now.
Just looked at the furniture receipt and it isn't coming until this afternoon - time to play outside for awhile!!
Took me an hour to catch up this morning. Then I had a problem reading and making notes with this persistant little baby wanting to sit on my lap and play with my pajama ties. She's looking great and has evidently forgiven me for forcing fruit flavored antibiotics down her throat...at least until her 10: a.m. dose.
Thanks for the BD greetings. I am apparently not on the birthday list due to my own negligence....plus I don't check it either, so unless there's an automatic reminder that goes with it, I'll likely forget everyone else's too!
I think the furniture is in it's final stages, I was moving the end tables and lamps, (the furniture is reallly heavy!) to get lighting and convenience arranged. So now, it looks like this....taken while standing on a hassock....and I didn't fall off and break my leg...notice I'm already cluttering up the room with throws and books...won't be long before it looks like home.........
Futile effort on the spacesaver coffee maker! Went to three stores, no soap. Will try again this morning on my way over to use the Dyson on DIL's dust bunnies at the old house, but I'm not optimistic. She might end up ordering on line. Not enough counter space in the new, until DS gets around to redesigning the kitchen and installing a dishwasher. Lucky he's such a handy fixer upper. We need to dig up her roses and move them, the new owner doesn't want them. (Imagine!!)
mg, that Jenna is surely a cutie, as is Okus's DGD. If we tried to sleep like that they'd have to hire professionals to unwind us afterwards. Isn't it fun to enjoy them for a while and then give them back!! My oldest DD always complained that her boys behaved like angels for me and then reverted to their normal mischief when they got home. I reminded her that I didn't tell them sixteen times about something before I put the hammer down.....and that children are deaf to their parent's voices after the first admonition. Now she is a Grand, and can do it to her son's little one. There is some justice in the world, isn't there?
Maybe we will have some news about DR's father's condition soon.
Carat, Dave said there was already a Canada forum, but I know there are multiple climate conditions up there, like here in the states. Maybe this will start a regional trend. I like the idea of a midwest, or "corn" country forum. It's like Michigan, the UP has an entirely different temperture range from the lower part of the state.
That lilac is a monster! Mine are just about 4 feet high, but they did bloom nicely this year so they are getting their roots established.
Anybody notice Mccool managed to complain about her first name and avoid giving it? Hortense? Gladys? Esmerelda? And she didn't tell us what kind of candles she's making either. C'mon, kid, 'fess up!
Joyous!! Glad to see you back....a comment about senile dementia and Alzheimer's....they are second cousins in the medical area. Alzheimer's generally starts early....senile dementia, late, due to hardening of the arteries. Hard to tell the difference when it's your loved one suffering..and terribly hard on the families in either case.
Also, I'm in the process of retraining my DH for his future retirement. Such as, being home on a weekday does not equal breakfast and/or lunch being served. Last one up makes the bed. If the phone rings, you should answer it if you are closest. Hope it sinks in before he actually retires....!! I'll have to see if lantana is hardy in zone 5, that's an attractive plant, nice shape and flowers to boot! And I love getting new furniture! My entire life was furnished with hand-me-downs or thrift shop bureaus and beds, and it's just grand to be able to buy something that is exactly what you want and not because "it'll do".
Sarv, you need a new computer. What happened to that nice check from your parents? We need pictures and you aren't ever going to do it unless you upgrade!!! Now, when you go to bed tonight, worry about that!! And put down those Oreos!!! LOL
mg, great link to tv without pity, I missed the episode with the shooting, so finally I am caught up! Garlic and onions simmering is one of my favorite kitchen aromas...today is rainy and cool and that will make the house smell wonderful if I start a pasta sauce early.
Maria, I view gambling as equivalent to throwing money down the potty....I hate losing...I don't even view it as a moral issue, I think it's just a waste. The casinos don't make any money on me, I hit the buffet and I think they come out behind....don't get between me and the shrimp!! Nice win for you, save it for our midwest RU, which is looking more and more like a possibility. It sounds like we're thinking Iowa, but that's not solid yet, just a good possibility. When? dunno that either!
Oh boy, I really need to get moving....two hours sitting in front of the
computer, and I'm not even dressed yet......and the coffee pot is empty! DH home again on vacation: reminder...vacation day does not = breakfast.
Oh Joy - love the room!! The armoire is beautiful - I had to get a little one - space constraints.. and the table for bird watching - how delightful!! I especially liked your room color with the white moldings. I redid one room in a taupe with white molding and love it. The rest of our house has dark molding and trim and I would love to paint over it, but DH is putting his foot down (something he seldom does ) so I will have to work on that for a couple of years. Who knows, by the time he gives in, styles may change and I will be back in style!!
Off outside to look at things!
What a lovely room, very, very nice. I love the windows, must have a very neat architectual view looking at it from the exterior
LOL, M5, about McCools name!
Maria
Maria, you can't see from the exterior the land drops off about 5 feet from the room to the bottom of a gully over 50 feet down! That was my other fall I almost took last winter. I slipped on wet slippery late snow and the lower half of me was hanging. Everytime I would get a knee under me it would slip. I was clutching an old porch post that we put in to hold a roof that coverd our wood pile not very stable at all. Landed also on a flower pot broke it and cut up my knee. By the time dh and ds missed me and didn't hear me HOLLERING ds came out and watched me finally pick my self up!!!!!!!!!! Never again when snow is on the ground.
Here is the land behind the room what there is of it.
Morning Goblins!
I love seeing the pictures of everyones rooms, gives me hope that someday.........
For the GOB RU, I'd love to "Host" it here in Dubuque, would that be selfish? I can't really travel too far, and we have such a great Arboretum that I adore showing off. We are pretty centrally located and we do have jet service for the flyers.
We should avoid Mother's Day, and probably Memorial Day weekend so that leaves May 6 & 7, 20 & 21, or June 3 & 4, 10 & 11. Would you all like to go thru your calendars and see what would work for you? A special note: the Iowa RU is May 5 & 6. We could combine the 2 and add May 8th, and have a 5 day event!!! The Iowa RU is mostly a get together and Karoke Friday night and then the RU all day Saturday. Link: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/510804/
Des Moines is 3.5 hours from me. I'm planning to go to the RU, but if you would like to hold our RU down there I don't know the area very much. If you would like to go to the IA RU and then move our RU back here, that would be workable too. Or we could do something else.
Help?
Did McCool say something in the last thread that I missed? (I know Sarv's first name...hehehe)
Well...GOOD morning, everyone!!
I spent most of yesterday transferring 17.5 GIGs of music files onto one of my internal drives...then spent most of the day LISTENING to tunes, playing solitaire, and checking out the progress on my suggestion for new regional forums. (I hope we get it, I hope we get it, I hope we get it!)
Looks like 'congrats' are in order for a birthday (Sheila...sorry I didn't get around it earlier) for some winnings (YEAH MARIA!!!) and for new furniture (Sheila) and one gorgeously decorated newly built room with what I'm guessing is a great view!
Donna...as long as someone lets me know where to find a new session (LOL) I don't mind in the least if someone else starts this thread when it gets too long to load easily. I've thought about making it a 'daily' thread, and let whoever gets here first start it up. The only problem is (based on daily's on my photography site) we would have trouble only getting ONE daily per day! ~grin~
Of course, on that other site, it eventually got to the point where we had people in Australia starting the "daily" when *their* day began. hahahaha
Hi Joy! Hi Woodspirit! (Just a couple of names I don't see very often.)
Thanks V.Ann for the help over in the regional thread! (You're a sweetie!)
I know there were more comments I wanted to make...but I think my mind is lined with slippery stuff and the thoughts slipped right out.
Time to check the suggestion box over in the DG forum to see how we're faring this morning.
Later peeps!
~julie~
Okay, okay, UNCLE, I give up. My first name is Elaine. I mentioned it once before in this thread, but it was quite a ways back. My mother named me after that silly little cow in the tales of King Arthur. She (the Elaine in that story) up and DIED because Lancelot didn't bother to say goodbye. What a WUSS! That is definitely not me! On top of that, it just never felt like a good fit, but I never got around to legally changing it and it would be way too much of a hassle now.
As for the candles I've been making ---- I'll post a couple of pictures for you. They're all on my website, but I didn't think I'd be allowed to post the URL because it would be advertising. Maybe some of you who've been here a lot longer than I have could advise me?
I'll try to catch up with everyone later. DH wants the computer so I'll just post a couple of pics and check back this evening.
Mornin' all... whew, we ARE a chatty bunch! Plus, I've been watching both "Wilma" and the Wilma thread so we can start a FL check-in list. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/553217/
Maria, congrats on the WIN!
MG, someone ought to make a list/map of where all of us live and see what's central for the majority for a GOB's RU. It will probably be too far for me.
Joy and M5... great rooms! I'd hate Joy's gully being so close, though.
Just checking back in - gosh this waiting is driving me crazy! I want to go to town and DO something besides cleaning...laundry all done, dishes done - still need to vaccuum tho.
I made myself a list of dg names and real names - will have to post it by my computer to know who's talking about who!! I will just sign my name at the bottom...
Joy = that is some gully behind your house. Where are your gardens? At least you don't have a lawn to mow out back. Bet it is peaceful watching the wildlife . Our back yard used to be all fields with huge forests way out. Suburbia has slowly been creeping up tho - only a small portion of woods is left and we have an industrial park that we can see from our back yard going in. We used to sit in the evening and watch the deer come out to eat, but this summer we didn't see a one - shame. The immediate field behind us is farmed. Just a matter of time before we are surrounded. It has really taken a toll on the value of our property - who wants to live with factories in your backyard!
Gosh it is cloudy, gloomy and cold outside. I just hate this kind of weather - give me sun!!
Julie - I've been watching the progress on your regional forums- We have a Mich one, but there is not much activity on it. I'm not sure what would be best- regions or zones..
I've somehow burned the roof of my mouth and it is driving me crazy - probably from that pumpkin pie fresh from the oven that I couldn't keep my hands off - now I am suffering!! But not bad enough that it stopped me from eating a plate of chips and cheese!
Gonna go now and watch a bit of Martha Stewart - take care everyone!
Sue
I know I need to get a new computer- and do have the $$ thanks to my mom, but I hate to dump this one as long as it is working - the old dutch in me showing up now!! I may just fuss and try and post a pic - but don't hold your breath!!
Good morning, everyone.
I got up here at my father's hospital around 2 pm yesterday. Horrible traffic for 6 hrs driving! But made it fine in the rain too.
He is doing better than I expected. Tho he was in pretty bad shape on Sat., I guess.
He can speak tho his left side of his mouth doesn't move much so is hard for me read his lips. His left leg is pretty much shot so far. He tried to use the walker but he just ended up dragging his leg along.
But PT is to start either today or tomorrow. So we shall see. My mother is very lost and confused. She told me that she didn't realize that how dependent she had become on my father. She had that pacemaker put in recently and my dad was doing a lot just to keep the stress level down for her.
So I told her that I am here for her, will do the driving for her and that she is going to have to just learn how to do the things now.
I want to THANK YOU ALL for sending good vibes and prayers my way. DO appreciate it much.
I don't have time to respond to all but hope you all have a better week this week.
Later, Carol (DR)
Carol (DR) Thank you for giving us an update on your dad, I'm glad he is doing ok. I know you are still scared, and I would be too, if you need to "chat" at anytime let me know and I can backdoor us into Dave's chatroom.
My thoughts continue to be with you and your parents.
Carol(DR) I'm SO glad that you were met with a better set of circumstances than you expected. And I'm so happy that the trip went well for you. (I Hate driving distances...and really hate it when the weather and traffic are more than I can handle!)
It looks like the Upper Midwest Gardeners got their new forum...or *will* be getting it very soon! YEAH!!!
Sarv (Sue) I noticed that there wasn't much activity in the Michigan forum when I checked it out over the weekend. I felt a little unfortable posting my comment there because I obviously don't live in the State. I think that's what prompted me to suggest that we needed a *bunch* of regional forums so people could have a place to ask questions that really only apply to a geographic location...even zonal designations aren't much help. But if I ask people how the heck I'm supposed to keep cannas over the winter here in this chunk of the country (read that 'Continent') people will have a good idea of not only why I want to konw...they'll know what conditions I have to work with. Wish me/us luck....and LOTS of people to post questions and, hopefully, ANSWER them.
Joy, I had no idea of the "view" I'd see outside those windows!
:-O Sounds like you could have used one of those 'Life alert' pendants when you fell. I know how it feels to not have anyone hear me when I fall. Been there, done that...and am scared stiff to have it happen again. BE CAREFUL!!!
~julie~
Carol (DR)... happy for you that it isn't as bad as you feared. Hugs!
I've thought about those "life alert" pendants too... I figure living alone it would be weeks before anyone found me.

sarv48 - I was gonna ask you to share your list of names and user names for those less organized, but I think we've got most of them above.
Don't dump your old computer if you can possibly find a space for it. But get a new one. Take your time transferring your files and in time you'll be happy to let the old one go.
daisyruffles(Carol) - thanks for the report on your parents. It sounds as though you will be busy reassuring you mother and encouraging your father. We will be here with moral support at least. Do you have any siblings to help out?
Re gambling - the trick is to treat it as entertainment and set a budget. Not a good idea for an addictive personality. And unfortunately it often attracts those who can't afford to be risking anything. A few years ago the city of Gloucester (a suburb of Ottawa which has subsequently been amalgamated into Ottawa) wanted to set up slots in an empty store just down the street from the Food Bank I operate. Also almost next to a high school. Fortunately, we successfully fought that and it didn't happen. But can you imagine?
After Aquafit this morning, I've been working on gardening images from 2005 - making them small enough for the Internet and eliminating many. It's time to get the 2005 page up on my family web site. I'm going to post two pics of the same rose. Please tell me which one you think I should use. Here is #1.
Ann
Here is number 2. I can't decide.
Ann
Oh...definitely the second one. I love the comp on that one!
(Gorgeous rose, I might add.)
~julie~
Ann, I like the second one best, it shows more of the yellow. Which rose is that? It sure is pretty!
I'll edit the list Julie to add those 2.
#1...
Ann - I like the composition of #2 the best, but the background of #1 is better - no extra color of flowers behind it, just the rose itself.
Mebbee I could air-brush #2. LOL
Ann
